Anyone here familiar with WoW?
« on: January 11, 2011, 06:47:09 PM »
I thought so.

I'm looking at some new players for my group. One of them is a World of Warcraft-geek and asks what would most resemble one of their Shamans in D&D. From the description I got it seems like a Totemist could do it fairly well, either that or some kind of blaster (got the impression of a weird Sorc). But since I haven't touched the game since about 1.5 years before the first expansion (and man, that was a waste of money) I'd like to ask if someone who knows the game could provide some build advice.

As for books, stay away from third party material and all is well. Assume a 32-point buy

The guy is completely new to this so a not too complicated build would be nice

Any and all help is appreciated,  because I'm completely lost.

Seems to me like an element-themed caster with some healing and some blasting. Maybe carry some Spell Turrets in a Portable Hole to mimic the totems.

Tell him to shut the fuck up and play a sorcerer, the pussy.

I had something like that in mind (unless that is a WoW-class now and that's what you are talking about) and then just add appropriate fluff.

How about tell him he doesn't have to pay $15 a month so be happy and pick something.
Clerics and Druids are like the 4 and 2 in 42. Together they are the answer to the ultimate question in D&D.
Retire the character before the DM smacks you with the Table as the book will feel totally inadequate now.-Hazren

That will come through subliminal messages as the game goes on. As it seems now, I'll not be able to start a new game until late March so there will be some waiting on his behalf.

For now I'll just settle with a showing him that "Yes, you can do everything you are familiar with ", but once he starts to play with the big boys I'll make him see the error of his ways

Resto is Conjuration (Healing) and Elemental is Evocations. Enhancement? Buff spells and martial-ness. Cleric with Fire and Storm domains. And Divine Might for Enhancement. Summoning Wolves is covered by SNA or something similar, that's an archetype which doesn't transfer well to WoW. Totems? WoW kind of has DnD beat on that mechanics. There isn't much like it without liberal refluffing and blurring mechanics. He can pretend his combat duration buffs are totems I guess.

I don't play WoW, but instead of teaching by osmosis, I suggest giving him a disclaimer that blasting is subpar in D&D. If hes still down with the trope, set him up with an optimised Warmage. With Sanctified One of Kord.

I would need more details on what his shaman does.

Heals with chain heals and the power of nature.
Blasts with Fire, Wind, Water, Earth, Electricity.
Hits with weapons engulfed in the elements.
Drops totem which buff those in a small radius.

That covers all talent trees and the classes gimmick.

Perhaps we could design a custom character class instead? might be fun  :P

For those who haven't played WoW, a shaman looks more or less like this...

Medium armor and shields, simple weapons, plus axes (including two handed axes and clubs but no swords or ranged weapons)

Iconic shaman abilities:
1 transforming into a spirit wolf ( meant for travel, slower than a horse so perhas doesn't get tired? effectively a normal wolf, only slightly transparent)
2 imbuing weapons with spirits, boosting damage, spell damage or healing done while the effect lasts
3 shocks - single target damage spells with negligable casting time, they deal a small debuff, depending on the element manifested.
4 chain lightning and chain healing
5 elemental shields - they can be cast for free and surround the shaman with an aura that shocks attackers or restores his energy when he is hit.
6 totems - one for each element. when set up they either buff nearby allies or attack (either with fire or by manifesting an elemental.)

The three specialties of the shaman are:

Restoration - a healbot with ranged healing spells. can protect one ally with an earth elemental shield that heals him a bit each time it is discharged.

Elemental - a blaster

Enhancement - a dual wielding gish  - besides summoning spirit wolfs he has a skill called mealstorm weapon: while hitting enemies he builds up an effect that when charged, allows him to cast one of his spells as quickened (so between this and water shield he gets very good at the HP game, recovering energy and healing himself as long as he has someone to bash with his clubs.)

Perhaps a Shapeshift druid, or Spirit Shaman?

I know what a shaman can do...but if we plan around blasting and he is beating or healing?

I suggest pointing him toward a Wu-Jen. That would cover the Shaman spellcasting except for healing. I think that adding healing spells to his spell list would be the best way to give him that. Its not like adding healing would make the class OP. If he wants to be melee you can point him toward swiftblade or another gish prestige class.

Status affecting spells are just as important in wow as in DnD. If he has any experience in PvP then he shouldn't have too much trouble figuring out that just blasting everything in sight is a good way to die.

I thought Shujenga because you can easily get Healing spells, but its too much work to get the really awesome spells added to their list. Spirit Shaman has way more options, but I'm uncertain how he'll react to the Spirit based features. Are you okay with rebuilding some of it?

Glyph seals and/or earthbound spell?
Eh, the wizard have more money than them combined, he could in theory just use all his money on a fleet of trained attack mules, but then we aren't playing 3.5 but zergling rushing in Starcraft instead.
