Ways to gain Turn Undead
« on: December 23, 2010, 06:07:04 AM »
I'm trying to do something different for an upcoming game. Namely a DMM: Persist Archivist/Sacred exorcist.

What bothers me is that my build idea (Archivist 7/Sacred Exorcist x) doesn't get Turn undead until lvl 7, which means the earlier I can take DMM: Persist and Extra Turning is lvl 9.

Sm I'm in need of some help: is there a race/template/item that grants Turn Undead?

Hi!

I'm trying to do about the same, the only difference is I'm trying to find a way to do that as an evil aligned archivist.

First of all, don't worry too much about extra turning, instead buy objects that grant you turning attempts. What may be the most obvious object to do that is Nightstick (libris mortis), a rod that grants 4 extra turning attempts to whomever possesses it. That's right, you don't even have to hold it in your hand. That's at the cost of 7500 gp. And it doesn't require a body slot :o.
It doesn't say what type of bonus it grants, so if your DM accept it as unnamed bonus, you can even buy more than one. If he doesn't allow for nightsticks to stack, the are more objects that grant extra turning attempts. I'm sure there was a thread about that.

edit- also, as I believe the translation in my language of the nightstick entry is messed up, could someone please quote it?

You you're going to persist, you want multiple turning pools. I'd suggest at least Sacred Archivist/Radiant Servant for double your fun from Nightsticks/Extra Turning. There's also Eye of Horus-Re, Dread Necromancer, Azurin Cleric Racial Sub, some dragon-based sub that works the same, and of course, cleric. Not all of those will necessarily stack, but each extra pool you get adds (3+Cha) + (4 x ExtraTurning/Nightsticks).

There's also a template from DMG2 ...hrmm..pg159 Past Life (Su)...Turn or Rebuke as an 11th Level Cleric. LA +5, so it sucks, but hey, it's another source of turning.

Dread Necro 1/Rainbow Servant 10/Sacred Exorcist 1

will get you two pools of turnings, and all the spells on both cleric and dread necro spell-lists. Early entry via versatile spellcaster, heighten spell, earth sense, earth spell. You will need to be human or stoutheart halfling and 2 flaws.

doesnt work:

Dread Necro ... No dread necromancer can have a good alignment.
Sacred Exorcist ... Any Good Alignment

Nothing preventing a good DN. You can start neutral and turn good.

Azurin Cleric works for DMM, but won't be increased by Extra Turning since Extra Turning only grants more Turn/Rebuke Undead attempts, not more Channel Incarnum uses.

Hmm, with Past Life, what would happen if you went ahead and became a necropolitan? Could you use that to reduce your LA, and then replace it with a class level? How about just getting someone to slap you with negative levels, so that you can just go ahead and grab yourself real class levels?

On a strange note, would anyone be put out if we had a post about people or events we can spare a thought for, or if its within their creed, a prayer for? Just a random thought, but ... hells I wouldn't have known about either Archangels daughter or Saeomons niece if I didn't happen to be on these threads.
Sounds fine to me.

might want to put a little disclaimer in the first post.

This is the Min/Max board. We should be able to figure out a way to optimize the POWER OF PRAYER(TM) that doesn't involve "Pazuzu, Pazuzu, Pazuzu".

I don't think there is anything that won't cost you at least 1 caster level. You should just bite the bullet and go ahead and dip into cloistered cleric, dread necro, or something like that.

Kinda fuzzy ground there.

Anyhow, check my lists of stuff for a list of ways to get Turning.

Alright, a question (tangentially related):

When you fix Level Drain, do you regain the same class level you had before, or can you pick from a different class?

It seems you're restored "one experience level"; saying nothing more specific than that leads me, anyway, to believe you could choose a different class/feat/etc if you wanted.

Thanks everybody for answering. It looks like I'm going to have to suck it up and get DMM: Persist at lvl 9. It's not that bad as there are other feats that I need anyway: extend, persist and knowledge devotion.

On a somewhat related topic: does an archivist qualify for Battle Blessing? It requires one to 'be able to cast paladin spells'. What does that exactly mean: having access to the paladin spell progression itself, or just have access to some spells that are on the paladin spell list?

The actual Paladin progression.
Otherwise, you could say that Wizards can cast Cleric spells since they both have Protection from Evil on their spell lists.

Check under my build compendium's CoDzilla if u want the max DMMable pools, if you want more than you need. Casting progressions, of course, are not guaranteed
