Super speedy character advice
« on: December 17, 2010, 06:53:23 AM »
In an upcoming campaign, the DM is doing something...weirdish.  In an ultralow magic environment (I might be able to afford an ion stone by level 10, its that rare), we, the characters, have superpowers.  I've chosen to play the speedy dude.  I'm not sure of all the perks, but the DM's let slip speed increases, dex increases, and the ability to avoid attacks of opportunity.  Hearing this, I though swift hunter.  Then I thought battle jump, then tiger claw maneuvers, then dervish.  Is there something else?  What would you do with super high dex, crazy speed, and the ability to avoid AoO?  And yes, I've read everything about hoods, ghosts, pixies, etc, so its useless to mention them.

um...thanks!

You should study up on Chuck and borrow what you can from that.  As I recall Chuck got his start as someone simply trying to set a land speed record on 339.  Some of what he can do might be applicable with your superpowers.
"We managed to make an NPC puke an undead monster."
"That sounds like a victory to me."

Half-fey gives you a fly speed equal to twice your base land speed.  You might want to consider slapping that on after everything else.

Since you're talking high dex, check here for ideas to add dex to damage.

Take a 1-level lion-totem barbarian dip (w/ whirling frenzy rage) for pounce.
Swordsage for a shadow hand stance (island of blades or assassin's stance) so you can add dex to damage (edit: with the shadow blade feat).
Get the sudden leap maneuver so you can do a leaping, power attack charge pounce then swift action jump away afterward. ;)

Don't know if all that fits your setting, but it adds a lot of stabby-fun to a speedy charcter.

Hood (link in sig) focuses on land speed optimization, along with massive damage and mobility.
Hood - My first answer to all your build questions; past, present, and future.

Speaking of which:
Don't even need TO for this.  Any decent Hood build, especially one with Celerity, one-rounds [Azathoth, the most powerful greater deity from d20 Cthulu].
Does it bug anyone else that we've reached the point where characters who can obliterate a greater deity in one round are considered "decent?"

Which is why I said I've already read into it.

Otherwise, thanks for all the suggestions.

Don't mind Endarire; he never fully reads the OP.

Swift Hunter is good because it's mechanically easy and fits the theme. High point of the build is level 6-10 from my experience. If starting at 10+ Swiftblade outclasses it in enough ways to be worth the extra bookkeeping.
It always seems like the barrels around here have something in them.

Apologies.  I didn't see the part about Hood in the original post.

Hood would work too obviously. If you go that route just explain what you'll be doing to the DM before hand because it's one of those "the sum is greater than its parts" type of things that can surprise a DM just glancing over the sheet. And surprised DMs who think you've snuck something passed them, are more likely to banhammer.

Also, if the power level is too high you can always intentionally leave out a component like Leap Attack.
It always seems like the barrels around here have something in them.

When I was playing, I never took Leap Attack because I was too busy one-shotting foes.  Everything in Red Hand of Doom died in 3 rounds or less, and most likely in one hit.
