Why I Plan to Ditch Matter Agitation and Levitate, and Possibly Entangling Ectoplasm and Concussion Blast, Too

why not simply take the better powers in the first place ... heres what i would have done:

Level 1: Channel the Psychic Dragon, Psionic Minor Creation, Vigor
Level 2: Astral Construct, Entangling Ectoplasm
Level 3: Ego Whip, Crystalstorm
Level 4: Amethyst Burst , Share Pain
Level 5: Dispel Psionics, Time Hop

CtPD is a great power, but DM's been hinky about powers from Dragon Magic. Besides, like Lycanthromancer said, Matter Agitation is awesome at low levels. My teammates were in awe of my ability to deal consistent, no save damage without an attack roll, round after round after round at level 1. At 5th level, though, it's not so awe-inspiring. It's simply a great power that's outlived its usefulness.

Ego Whip is nice, but we were up against enemies that were immune to mind-affecting for 99% of the time I was at levels 3 and 4. It's a great power, but not in the context of the campaign I'm in at the time it would ordinarily be taken.

Amethyst Burst: same problem as with CtPD.

Share Pain is what I plan to drop Levitate to get. Levitate has been INSANELY useful. Again, it was a selection made due to the way things have progressed in-game.

Dispel Psionics is a power I'd LOVE to have in any ordinary campaign. In this one, though, the DM's playing with some kind of hybrid transparency rule. Certain things work transparently, others do not. Until I can be 100% sure that I wouldn't be taking a gimped power, I'm not going to take it.

Quote
I'm not settled on dropping Entangling Ectoplasm. It's definitely useful, but I'm going to take Ectoplasmic Cocoon. Yeah, the latter allows a save while the former doesn't, but there is substantial overlap in what the powers try to achieve. While EE could be used to debuff the target's Reflex save before using EC, I'm not sure it's worth keeping around and may opt to drop it in favor of Inertial Armor so I can have a long-term self-buff.

+x Mithral Chain Shirt or Bracers of Armor are both better, because they dont use any PP to function

Inertial Armor lets you get a better armor bonus than anything else in the game of which I'm aware. With a +1 Mithral Chain Shirt of Heavy Fortification and Inertial Armor, I'll have all the defense I'll need in most situations.

Quote
Finally, Concussion Blast. I'm leaning toward taking Transdimensional Power as an alternative to Force effects, at some point in my build. However, both that feat and Concussion Blast may become unnecessary if my DM lets me have Amethyst Burst and/or Gemstone Breath. Regardless, one way or the other it's gonna be obsolete before too many more levels pass.

at 6th lvl if you took Transdimensional Power, it would make all of the choices i gave even stronger ... and there was no need to Reform

I need Psionic Meditation at 6th to make optimal use of Chaotic Surge until I get to 8th and can use it with Wild Surge.

could you do me a favor ...... can you make 2 sample builds:

Psion 10

and Psion 20

they can be any type of Discipline ..... just ordinary Psions that you might find in any game, not NPCs, but what players might use and that would be allowed in most any game

assume 28pt buy, no Flaws, Core+SRD+Completes+Races+Dragon magic+Eberron(books, All)+ToB+Champions of Valor

it would be nice to have a balanced baseline Build to compare peoples builds to, ..... to make sure that they can keep up with it in performance.

Absolutely. I've always planned to include a builds section for this guide. Not super-hyper-megaoptimized builds, but ones that are very good and viable across all levels. The builds would definitely include a 1-20 "general purpose" Psion build. Similar to what you have in your own guide.

Woulda done this already, if the boards hadn't been down for so many days.

My girlfriend is currently playing the following in the PHB.  She wanted to play a character like Kahlan Amnell (Legend of the Seeker) who is good but can force people to do as she commands.  I of course thought of the Thrallherd showed her the prestige class and she built this:

As she levels up I'll keep posting her build (at 1,5,10 etc).  We'll assume the min/max is not strong with her.

Got a general-purpose build for levels 1-7 up. Only using Core, XPH, and CPsi for now. It at least gives players a good idea of what to do up until Psychic Reformation is available.

here is a fun Fact .... if you take the Feat: Knowledge Devotion .... it eliminates ever taking ..... Offensive Precognition or Offensive Prescience ... since they require PP and Actions to gain the benefits and they are short duration .... Knowledge Devotion is always available and since a Psion gets ALL Knowledge Skills as Class Skills(you only need to put skill points in 5 of them to benefit) .... it seems to be an Automatic choice for all Psion builds ... they will always gain from it

Devotion feats can greatly boost the effectiveness of a Psion build

Not sure if this has been noted, or it is specifically possible.. but as far as I see, Egoist can pick up the Life Mantle. And with that mantle they qualify for Tap Mantle, meaning they can get powers not on their lists.

Well, here is a 9th level one that I actually played. There were a couple of house rules in play that modified it, but if it is just for an example I think it should work... If flaws were allowed, you'd just add two of those and strip off two powers known to make it 100% legal. If the DM allowed it, I'd absolutely take Psionic Minor Creation and use it to make poison, but this one didn't (I played other warfored shapers under DMs who did, and it is devastatingly effective...).

Warforged Shaper 9
Ability Scores: (28 pt. buy) Str 8 (0), Dex 16 (14+2enh) (6), Con 20 (16+2enh+2race) (6), Int 20 (16+2enh+2levels) (10), Wis 12 (6), Cha 6 (0)
Hit Points: 86
AC: 25 (10+8armor+4shield+2dex+1defl) (+1-3insight and/or +4 defl. sometimes), Touch 12, Flat-footed 25
Saves: Fort +10, Refl +8, Will +8 (+1 to 3 insight sometimes)
Initiative: +3
Movement: 30'
Attack: +8 MW Light Crossbow (1d8), +7 Ranged Touch, +3 Slam (1d4-1)
Feats: Psionic Body (1), Psicrystal Affinity (Psi1), Quicken Power (3), Overchannel (Psi5), Expanded Knowledge: Empathic Transfer (6), EK: Schism (9).
Extra Feats (house rule, but could be from flaws): Empower Power, EK: Control Body
Skills (ranks only): Craft: Sculpting 10, Psicraft 8, Knowledge: Psionics 10, Concentration 12, Use Psionic Device 12, Knowledge: Architecture and Engineering 10

Powers Known: [Level (number known)] includes 2 free powers (houserule)
1st (5): Vigor, Energy Ray, Precognition: Defensive, Grease, Crystal Shard, Astral Construct
2nd (4): Empathic Transfer, Share Pain, Ego Whip, Levitate, Energy Adaptation: Specified, Psionic Repair Damage
3rd (4): Energy Wall, Dispel Psionics, Ectoplasmic Cocoon, Solicit Psicrystal, Mental Barrier
4th (4): Fabricate, Dimension Door, Intellect Fortress, Schism, Control Body
5th (2): Hail of Crystals, True Seeing
Power Points: 94

Equipment:
Power Stones of Psychic Reformation (950 gp, contains 50 XP), Trace Teleport (700 gp), Body Purification (2 stones, 150 gp each (PsiW), ML4), Object Reading (2 stones, 150 gp each, ML3), Clairvoyant Sense (3 stones, 150 gp each, ML3), and Psionic Revivify (1,125 gp, did not include XP since both pay it, ML9)
Psicrystal (Single-Minded, +3 Concentration)
+2 Darkwood Heavy Shield (+4 AC, 0 ACP, 15% ASF, 4,257 gp)
Amulet of Health +2 (4,000 gp), Headband of Intellect +2 (4,000 gp)
Heward's Handy Haversack (2000 gp), Dagger (2 gp)
Gloves of Dexterity +2 (worn, 4,000 gp)
Warforged Component: equivalent of Skin Ectoplasmic of Armor (3,000)
Cloak of Resistance +2 (4,000 gp)
Ring of Protection +1 (2,000 gp)
MW Crossbow (335 gp)
Circlet of Persuasion (4,500 gp, on Psicrystal)
Stone of Alarm (2,700 gp).
39,567 used.

My comments on the build, and why it is the way it is.
The DM asked me not to take Metamorphosis, but let me have a couple of extra powers and extra feats (all the PCs have stuff like this). He had an NPC that is a psiwarrior, and he asked me not to take a couple of things that duplicated some of that guys abilities and items. (Ectoplasmic Cocoon, Entangling Ectoplasm and a Psychosomatic Skin... Spiderman/Venom inspired...). He let me take the Skin of Ectoplasmic Armor as a Warforged component, though, which was nice. :D

First, the character is alot of fun. He has quite alot of hit points, and by using Share Pain, he can actually take quite a bit more damage than the "tank" of the party (a Knight, has 120 max hit points), and his AC is actually better by 1 point (party isn't all that optimized). And it is ridiculously easy to heal himself by sharing the minimum 3 power point Psionic Repair Damage with his Psicrytal. 3 power points heals each of them on average 21 points, so basically the Psion can heal himself for 42 damage with 3 power points. I think dropping Talented was a good decision. The 3d8 damage for Overchanneling is inconsequential, really.

On the taking damage front, the main thing you have to be careful about is getting your Psicrystal (with Share Pain on it) caught in an area affect spell that also hits the main character. It would be really easy to lose a Psicrystal like this. The Improved Evasion + Hardness helps moderate this alot, however.

The other thing that was obvious was that it is REALLY easy to just blow all of your power points and be left useless. I started out kind of gung-ho and fired off a couple of Overchanneled Augmented Empowered powers (Energy Ray and Crystal Shard), and failed Power Resistance on the first, and rolled a 1 on the Ranged Touch Attack for the other. Then I had to heal myself for the Overchannel damage... Made me feel kind of silly and ineffective... In what seemed no time, I was down to 1/3 of my power points, and I didn't even use any of my power point intensive strategies to increase my actions per round (Shared Quickened Schism + Astral Construct, then firing off a bunch of Control Body powers, and passing their control off via Solicit Psicrystal).

I realize that with the setup I have, it would be extremely easy to blow pretty much all of my power points on one encounter. It would also be very silly... and might not even be that effective. All it would take is a few bad rolls, and alot of those power points could be entirely wasted. Playing a psion is all about learning to restrain yourself, it seems. Overall, I enjoy the character, but it plays quite a bit differently than any other I've had before.
Try this on for size:

Race: Human
Class(es): Psion (Egoist) 5/Crystal Master 3
Stats
Str: 8
Dex: 10
Con: 14
Int: 18
Wis: 14
Cha: 10

Flaws
Inattentive (-4 on Listen & Spot checks)
Shaky (Roll Concealment twice)

Traits
Absent-Minded (+1 on Knowledge Checks; -1 on Spot/Listen Checks)
Focused (+1 on Concentration Checks; -1 on Spot/Listen Checks)

Feats
Psicrystal Affinity (Nimble Personality) - 1st Level Standard Feat
Hidden Talent (Astral Construct) - 1st Level Psion Bonus Feat
Overchannel - Human Racial Bonus Feat
Talented - Inattentive Flaw Bonus Feat
Boost Construct - Shaky Flaw Bonus Feat
Psicrystal Containment - 3rd Level Standard Feat
Metamorphic Transfer - 5th Level Psion Bonus Feat
Knowledge Devotion - 6th Level Standard Feat
Improved Psicrystal (Hero Personality) - Crystal Master 1 Bonus Feat/Class Feature

Crystal Master Embedded Crystals
Sapphire (Touchsight, while Psionically Focused, 20 feet + 10 feet per additional embedded crystal)

Skills
Max Concentration, Psicraft, all Knowledge skills that mesh with Knowledge Devotion

Powers
Level 1
Astral Construct (gained through Hidden Talent Feat)
Attraction
Channel the Psychic Dragon
Entangling Ectoplasm
Inertial Armor
Vigor

Level 2
Control Sound
Empathic Transfer
Psychoportive Shelter
Share Pain

Level 3
Dispel Psionics
Energy Wall
Mental Barrier
Time Hop

Level 4
Divination, Psionic
Gemstone Breath
Intellect Fortress
Metamorphosis

Notes:
Good attack options with Gemstone Breath, Astral Constructs, and Metamorphosis combined with Knowledge Devotion. Overcomes poor Listen & Spot checks with Crystal Master Touchsight ability and Immediate Action powers like Intellect Fortress and Mental Barrier. Should embed the Malachite crystal, which gives Telepathy, and take the Mindsight feat at character level 9. With those, being bad at hearing/seeing shouldn't be a problem. Good utility and okay battlefield control. Can also heal others.

Edit:
Forgot about the lost ML at Crystal Master 1. Struck through the powers you should wait until CL 9 to take.

Oh, you also asked for equipment, so, assuming 27,000 GP for CL 8, here goes...

Mithral Buckler +1 = 1165 GP
Headband of Intellect +2 (Head) = 4000 GP
Goggles of Foefinding (Eyes) = 2500 GP (MiC 108)
Hand of the Mage (Neck) = 900 GP
Tunic of Steady Spellcasting (Torso) = 2500 GP (MiC 144)
Mithral Chain Shirt +1 (Body) = 2250 GP
Healing Belt (Waist) = 750 GP (MiC 110)
Cloak of Resistance +1 (Shoulders) = 1000 GP
Armband of Elusive Action (Arms/Wrists) = 800 GP (MiC 72)
Gloves of Object Reading (Hands) = 3000 GP
Ring of Sustenance (Ring 1) = 2500 GP
Ring of Protection +1 (Ring 2) = 2000 GP
Anklet of Translocation (Feet) = 1400 GP (MiC 71)

That fills all your body slots and leaves you 2235 GP for other stuff.

Here's a Psion-only build. I won't say it's even close to optimized, but I think it'd be fun to play. A psychic investigator type. Uses Knowledge Devotion, its ranged touch attack powers, and its proficiency in bows, and Psionic Shot to deal good damage with a low PP cost.

A TRULY optimized 8th Level Psion might just have the following powers on his/her list. I say might because these are all great powers, but there are a few which are arguably just as nice as some on this list. It's a complete toss-up when those powers are concerned.

The Psion would obtain powers outside of his/her Discipline by spending XP, and then riding the XP river, or by spending gold using the 1:5 XP-to-GP conversion ratio.

Level 1
Astral Construct
Charm, Psionic
Inertial Armor
Minor Creation, Psionic
Vigor

Level 2
Amethyst Burst
Clairvoyant Sense
Crystalstorm
Dimension Swap
Empathic Transfer
Share Pain

Level 3
Dispel Psionics
Time Hop
Touchsight

Level 4
Divination, Psionic
Dominate, Psionic
Metamorphosis

thanks for all of your work so far .....

heres something i have been working on:

Cerebremancer becomes a strong option relatively Early, not late in the game ..... by 8th level they start to Dominate even without early entry

Wizard 3/ Psion 3/ Cerebremancer 2 .... is the earliest that a Cerebremancer will start pulling ahead of a single classed Psion

what makes this so strong is mainly 4 things:

 • 1) Practiced Manifester and Practiced Caster .... allow the Cerebremancer to equal the Psion in Manifester level/Caster level
 • 2) Arcane Spells scale with caster level and dont require any further Augmentation, in addition; Metamagic Feats Dont require you to expend focus to use them and are available in Rod form that you can Purchase
 • 3) Wizards can change Spells that they memorize to fit the needs of the day. they can tailor thier spell list to optimize thier effectiveness for any situation
