Weird Casting Builds
« on: November 15, 2010, 02:27:15 AM »
I've got a character concept that would work best as some kind of very strange caster-type, and I want to reinforce that strangeness with its mechanics- have capabilities that will make the other players at the table go 'WTF just happened?' Not really looking for something off-the-hook broken here, nor comedy builds like the Sandwich Psion, just stuff people won't be familiar with. But my creativity is failing me- the best I can think of is shadowcaster.
We start at 5th level, or 4th level if we pick an option for gestalt (which will also slow XP progression). Gestalt characters also can't have any side of the gestalt go over tier 3 and can't have more than one side of the gestalt be a casting or martial initiating class. Ability scores use a high but random pick: more or less any source is available, including GITP homebrew and Dragon on approval. No LA buyoff.

I'm interpreting 'casting' extremely broadly here: psions, shadowcasters, binders, all that kind of thing counts. Individual sorc/wiz spells with strange effects might also work if I can find enough of them to build a decent spells known list out of.

It also helps my concept if the build is viable with warforged, elan, or other race that can be easily fluffed as being artificially created.

Binder//Totemist sounds like it would have rather odd things hanging off of it.
"You think I'm talking about breaking the rules?"
"No I'm just trying to figure out how far you want them bent."

The mountebank form Dragon Compendium is weird.  Weak, but weird.

It gets better if you remove the stupidly low per day limitations, but still isn't as good as a warlock (point it out to your DM - it's a reasonable houserule)

...I want to sig this. It also brings the mental image of Oscar from Sesame Street going apeshit and revealing that he's actually a level 20 Wizard with a sanctum in his garbage can.

Sanctum nothing.  That's a living planar breach, and he's got a whole demiplane in there.

Go right ahead, and ROFL TML, too funny!  Complete with Living Spell Template?  Or is he really an Eldritch Haunt?

Demons: canon for Sesame Street.

Yes.  That's right.  Big Bird defeats a demon, tells off a god, and is an integral part of judging a soul for damnation.

Don't mess with the Bird.

Some ideas:

Shadow-pouncing.

Ghost MotUS Telekinetic Full Attack.

Knowledge Devotion+Eager Weapon and Om Nomming them to death with Manyjaws (Spell Compendium).

Ordained Champion who uses Channel Spell to infuse a summoned Elysian Thrush with Death Throes, turning it into a bomb.

Dread Necromancer/Bard/Sublime Chord who uses Metamagic Wand of Chain to Chain Awaken Undead and Chain Protege to give his horde of zombies Bardic Music and Perform(breakdancing), followed by singing "Thriller."
It always seems like the barrels around here have something in them.

Blood Magus Conjurer with Spell Thematics (Blood) to make all his summons look like they're made of blood.

Well it doesn't say WHERE an EB fires from...I'll let you get creative with that.  Also, farting out a swarm would get a pretty good WTF from the party.

It also doesn't say where a dragon's breath weapon emanates from.  :smirk

Astral Constructs are fun since you can give them any shape you want. A Constructor could send out, for example, an army of Pokemon.

The Pierced Mystic does enough talking about that on his/her own.

You could also be a were-murder-of-crows.  Turning into a swarm is weird.
