While technically a 3rd party source, can anyone tell me how good for a psion the chronorebel prc in Hyperconscious is?
Never played one or been in a campaign with one. So this is my impression based solely off the text.
Examination:Easy entry requirements, and you can get into it at CL 6. The only thing that isn't so hot is that the feat required isn't one a Psion would ordinarily take, but it's not like it's a
bad feat.
The chassis is fair-to-good. Better HP, skill points and BAB than the base Psion class. The class skill list could be a bit better, since not everyone wants to play the party face. I'd say the worst part is that the PrC's good save is Ref.
As for class features:
The two lost ML is typical.
The Timeless ability looks awesome. Would be better if it got at least one more use/day.
Gaining the Slow Light power for free is meh because the power is meh.
The +1 bonuses to Defensive and Offensive Precognition is also meh. If they were unnamed bonuses that were always active then they'd be good.
Gaining the Causal Loop power for free is sweet because the power is sweet. Haven't seen it in action, but it looks like Battlefield Control and Save-or-Suck/Die all wrapped up in a nice package.
Backslip is like a free 1/day Time Regression. In effect you get a Discipline-specific, XP-costing, 9th level power well before it would otherwise be available...and for you it doesn't cost any XP to use. Ordinarily I'd say that's awesome, but what are you going to use it for except to reverse TPK or other totally-FUBAR situations? It's an Ace-in-the-hole that on most days you're going to want to hold on to, "just in case." Therefore it's cool, but not THAT cool.
Gaining the Temporal Concussion power for free is okay. The only good thing about the power is the ability damage it can inflict. On the other hand it's a ray AND the target gets a save to negate the ability damage.
Temporal Focus makes some powers better. Exactly which powers it helps is largely left up to the DM.
The PrC's capstone is a whole lot of WTF. It's really not a capstone. It's a plot hook disguised as a capstone. Plus unless the player is really, really careful then the ability invites the DM to outright kill the player's character. Therefore the player had better hope the DM doesn't have a vindictive streak.
Analysis:The good stuff: Its easy entry requirements, better hit die, and medium BAB.
The not so good stuff: The Chronorebel's level 1-9 class features are just...milquetoast. They just don't stack up to the lost ML and powers. Furthermore, I don't see someone going into this PrC for any other reason than to get the capstone and, like I said, the capstone is a total mixed bag.
For comparison purposes, the Anarchic Initiate also gets a medium BAB, the same hit die, and the same number of skill points. It also doesn't lose two ML, has a better skill list, and gains MUCH better class features, with the best being gained within the first three levels.
Conclusion:If I was to place it into my rating scale, I'd say that the Chronorebel gets a
black rating. What you get is roughly equivalent to what you lose.
It's hard to fully account for the PrC's capstone. If your DM gives players a lot of freedom then it could be super-powerful. If your DM is harsh or restrictive then the ability can be synonymous with suicide. Too much is left up to DM fiat.
