Use the PHB/DMG/MM1/SRD version of that.

Otherwise, if you can get SOME spellcasting but he is like, 'no full casters', try being a Psychic Warrior, perhaps?

Of course a PHB/DMG/MM1 Druid would be better at 'getting melee done' than that... focus on animal companion, wild shaping, and summoning.

That is a no to the druid. Did that last game. Might be able to get cleric. I doubt it. But its a possibility. But if it starts to look like the focus is shifting from melee to casting nope.

Where does that interpretation come from? 

3.0 rod of absorption required a standard action to ready. The 3.5 one doesn't. Spellfire is readied as per a rod of absorption.
