Don't know how to solve an equation? No idea how to remove a bubble gum from your pants? If you've got something that can be answered with a handful of sentences, ask it here and the local internet superheroes will dive in with their capes swinging!
The format goes like this:
User A: Q insert number here: Can some tell me what X means? Thanks!
User B: A insert the same number here: But of course. It means Y. No problem!
I actually don't have any questions at the moment, but the lack of a thread like this has been pestering me for quite a while. Maybe I can sleep my nights a little better now.
-
Q1 Anybody want some puppies? One of our dogs had a litter of 8 on Sunday. I'm trying to arrange good homes for all of them before they are old enough to be separated, so we don't get the stupid urge to keep them all. I live in Louisiana so it would be a bit of a trip for any of the European's to come by and pick one up, though they are welcome.
-
Although I have no interest in getting a puppy, I am from a family whose always had a dog or three. So that's the explanation for the curiosity that is to follow: What race are they?
-
very mixed breeds. The vet couldn't tell us what either of the parents were. So now the puppies will have even more of an identity crisis. ;) I'll try and get some pictures up to let you guys guess at what they are.
-
Q2 - This question has a bit of a winded explanation behind it, so bear with me.
Thanks to the complaint of a single, stupid journalist, my country's National Justice Council (Conselho Nacional de Justiça) has determined that payment of a debt owed to every single servant of the Law by the government is to be discontinued. This results in a salary slash of approximately 25-30% for all those involved on the receiving end of said payment, which goes against the clause that judges and such other Law servants cannot have their salaries slashed.
My question is twofold: one, in which parallel universe where the laws of simple logic do not apply did anyone consider this to be a good idea, and two, do you guys know anywhere with sufficient attendance that I may scream my protest and hopefully kill the stupidity at its root?

5. What the fuck does Rivfader mean? It's in like every other Finntroll song, and I can't find a translation for it. I person who had heavily accented typing who claimed to be Swedish on another board said he didn't know, it might be a Finnish dialect term.
-
5. Definitely not Finnish, I can tell you that much. Fader is a colloquial term for 'father' but riv is a new one to me. It could be a derivative of riva, which again means 'to tear' or 'to destroy'.
Ruam would be more qualified to give an answer than I am though.
-
5: This is what the Dutch wikipedia had to say, the English wiki didn't have any info:
Rivfader "scheurvader" - de trol die aan het hoofd van de bosgemeenschap staat.
"Rip-father" or "Tear-father" - the troll who's at the head of the forest community.
In other words, their leader.
Hope that helps :)

Swede to the rescue! Tshern seem to have gotten it quite right. It is not however a "actual" word but if I had to translate it into anything it would be "The father of tearing". This is explained by the fact that the Swedish language paste words together when we want to indicate that they belong together (for those of you interested in this I recommend this site (http://www.slayradio.org/mastering_swedish.php)). If it is from some of the older Fintroll songs it will be a living hell to try and translate since none in the previous setting actually knew any Swedish (though I still want to know who wrote the lyrics since they obviously where in broken Swedish).
The best of Finntroll's grammatical curiosities according to me is "Bland skuggor rider en odjur, som en svarta träd" translation: "Among shadows rides an beast, like an black trees", it still makes me smile every time I hear it.
Edit: Bowen might be on to something, I tried looking at Swedish Wikipedia (that sucks some major balls) but found nothing.
-
Yeah, Finntroll definitely isn't the greatest example of Swedish-singing bands. Even I find errors in their lyrics by the dozens.
-
Indeed. As rudimentary as my Swedish is, even I find that some of the lyrics don't seem right at times.

Obviously we have a problem. We will have to fix that ... time for "Phrases in Swedish that you probably never will use !"
1. "My piranha has a Mohawk". Trans.: "Min piraja har en Mohikan-frisyr"
2. "Pardon me good sir, can this radiator be used to cook hamburgers?". Trans.: "Ursäkta mig herrn, kan detta element användas för att laga hamburgare?"
3. "Your mother was a hamster and your father smells of elderberries". Trans.: "Din mor var en hamster och din far luktar fläderbär"
4. "My harmonica matches your pants". Trans: "Mitt munspel matchar dina byxor"
And now some fun with Swedish Grammar
5. "A brown-haired nurse". Trans.: "En brunhårig sjuksköterska"
6. "A brown, hairy, sick nurse" Trans.: "En brun hårig sjuk sköterska"
7. "A venomous snake". Trans.: "En giftorm"
8 "A married snake". Trans.: "En gift orm" (yes, we do have the same word for "Married" as for "venom", makes sense?)
That will do for now, now study hard :p

Q7: Is there going to be a test? :o
-
Incidentally, Swedish sounds a bit remniscent of a more complex German. I think I'd go crazy if I tried to learn its accentuation.
Q8: So how many of you out there speak Japanese? *flexes* Not that I do all that well...
-
Ruam: Then is the legendary 'bride of the straw island'.
-
Oh enough with Japanese. You know why the Japanese never conquered Europe? Fear of the Swedes. Look it up.
-
And they never had the change. Ever.
-
Oh enough with Japanese. You know why the Japanese never conquered Europe? Fear of the Swedes. Look it up.
A7. Should you ask for it.
I think it actually was fear of Swedish cooking. sweden has a lot of lakes and is never far from any coast so wherever you go you can find fresh fish. But what do we do? We dig a hole, put the fish in there, wait a year, dig it up and eat it. Or in some cases, let it ferment with some salt for roughly a year. Is this not enough for you? Take a fish, dry it, put it in a tub of lye and then boil it until can no longer be recognized. Serve any of this with potatoes.
Q8.I hate the taste of fish but I feel sorry for the poor bastards, how can they be allowed to do this to them?
-
A8: Because lutefisk is awesome. I could go for some right now.

Q10. I heard this rumour that some american re-named french-fries to "freedom-fries", is this true?
Q11. Now that the Lisabon treaty got accepted (damn governments) the United States of Europe will unofficially get created, any suggestion where I could move to escape this madness when I am finished studying? I prefer not to far from the polar circle and a fairly left wing-oriented rule.
-
A10: When I first heard of that I had a check and, apparently, it is true.
A11: What's with all the panic regarding the Lisbon Treaty? A more united Europe is a better Europe. Nevertheless, you greatly overestimate the impacts of the Treaty, just give it a read here: The Treaty in its entirety. (http://eur-lex.europa.eu/JOHtml.do?uri=OJ:C:2007:306:SOM:EN:HTML)
-
A10b: France strongly protested America attacking Iraq due to Hussein owing them a lot of money which would be erased as "odius debt" after we unseated their government. Since they dared to tell us that there were other effects to unseating a legitimate government than we though, we took the name "French" out of everything. Which is odd, I always heard that french fries were actually invented in Belgium.
-
Theoretically in Belgium. In practice, no, because Belgium wasn't a country until 1830.
-
Ah. Did not know that.
-
Britain backed up its independence back then, which was the official reason they joined the WW I when Germany used Belgium's land to invade France.
-
A11: What's with all the panic regarding the Lisbon Treaty? A more united Europe is a better Europe. Nevertheless, you greatly overestimate the impacts of the Treaty, just give it a read here: The Treaty in its entirety. (http://eur-lex.europa.eu/JOHtml.do?uri=OJ:C:2007:306:SOM:EN:HTML)
1st. It was not long ago that people in Sweden voted "no" to change the currency to Euro, now the government just accepted this without asking anyone (most people I talk with do not even now what the Lisabon-treaty is, there is even a nice little mail the governemt got with instructions on how to cover the precess up a bit).
2nd. The entire EU is run by morons. "Hmmm, here we have an entire ocean almost depleted of fish according to the scientists and our own investigation but the fishermen gets mad if we lower their quota and/or change the quota system to a more stable one. Bah, who listens to a biologist anyway?"
3rd. The people had no saying in the question whatsoever!
4th. EU is supposed to be a trade-organisation (and a peace-organisation between France and Germany, I live in neither of them), they are walking on very thin ice, trade people, not a semi-nation, how hard can it be?
-
1. Undemocratic for sure and I don't like it either, but it's a good thing it finally happens. Sweden, my new habitat and, well, all countries that don't use euros yet should finally get to the 21st century.
2. Yet they just fined Intel over a billion euros for violating an antitrust law. Things like that don't work in single countries, but because the EU has so many people studying each case like that it becomes virtually impossible to buy one's way out. Do note that no country in Europe has done anything about the overfishing on a national level far as I know. I am not happy with all of their policies either, but there is no way for Europe to improve its habits and quality of life on such a vast scale without the EU. With the majority rule of EU it does not matter if, just an example, Austria is unwilling to change its regulations regarding global warming, because improvements can be enforced.
3. In the fishing question? Perhaps you have noted that pretty much all decisions made by your government work exactly the same way. Keep in mind that the Lisbon Treaty does introduce an option of getting issues raised by large groups addressed in the Parliament. It does require a lot of names, one million I believe, but in big issues such as this it should not be too difficult with the 500 million population. Granted, some of them are underaged.
4. I thought it was based on the original Treaty of Rome of 1957 that actually included the Benelux countries and Italy as well. Anyway, your argument is null in the sense that now the Lisbon Treaty defines what the EU is supposed to be, while you stated what it was. EU goes deeper than that though, including humanitarian aid for example, which is one thing I support.
-
Pro's and con's with everything, I can agree with you on several points. What disturbs me mostly is the fact that it was a close call that Sweden got into the EU and a lot of people still think it was a bad call, and when they want to take it a step further they don't give a (insert mad blabbering here) about the people, and what disturbs me mostly about this is that even if we had the left wing-government, they would probably have done the same thing.
I do like what the EU can become, but I dislike most of what it is, they have the potential to do great good and if they use it I am willing to change my opinion, so far I am not impressed. If I decide to move away from it it will probably another seven and a half year since I need to finish up my studies.

Q12: Where could I find a price for bulk paperboard/boxboard? I need a quote for a project and I can't for the life of me find a distributor price.
-
A12: Try your local art supply store or the UPS store. Neither of them have let me down yet.
Q13: Where can I get cheap animal organs without breaking any laws?
-
Q13: Where can I get cheap animal organs without breaking any laws?
A 13
Depends largely on the kind of animal. When you buy a whole chicken, for example, it's often hollowed out with the organs (or at least the liver) in a separate package. Alternatively, ask your local butcher. I'm pretty sure you should be able to get a pig stomach and/or intestines with relatively little trouble.

How the fuck does this add up?
The area should be the same, right?
But it's not.
I can see why it's bigger.
But all my education says it's not possible.
What. The. Fuck?

It is a second-degree equation, as you solve it in the traditional way you will end up with 31,5 +/- 0,5 which means that the two possible solutions to this problem (meaning = put the figures together as a triangle) mathematically is 32 0r 31, there is a pic circulating the internet with the entire equation if you are interested, I myself have no idea how the formula went.
-
Sometimes I get the feeling the guys deciding how math should work have no firm grasp on simple reality.
Much as 0.99999999ad nauseum = 1.0 through some simple steps.
I can't remeber the process, but by applying what I've learned, I saw that there was apparently no flaw within the equation.
But it makes no sense.
...bah!
+++EDIT+++
Well, whatever. If they want it to work, I won't mind. I'll just be over here, nurturing my postmodernism :p
-
The first thing I notice on the triangle problem is that they want you to look at the whole thing as one large triangle, so the whole seems counter intuitive. If you look closely, you'll see the dark cyan triangle has a slope of 2/5 and the red triangle has a slope of 3/8. These two it's very close and are hard to see the difference with the naked eye. The trick is making you think the top figure is a right triangle when in fact, it's a quadrilateral.

Q: Has anyone been to the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, and how is it? I read about it on a cracked.com article about worst vacations, and I want to check it out. Yeah, I'm weird.

(incomplete) A:My cousin went there and he enjoyed it. One of the freshmen this year had worked there and I talked about it with her, she enjoyed her time there as well. Heck I want to go there as well, even if a room in the hotel is really expensive you can spend the day there and sleep in a cottage a few minutes from there.
http://www.icehotel.se/ (http://www.icehotel.se/) There is an "In English"-button in the upper right corner.
-
Q. Where can I find "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" streamed in Japanese, with English subs? After a long battle with google I end up beaten.
-
Can't do much for you when it comes to streaming, but this (http://www.torrentz.com/03c21e51504a4c8d3835a8d6680adab0fd6f7d3f) link should provide you to a seeded torrent.
EDIT: Considering the title is a year older than I am, you'd probably fare better by using the original title, Kaze no tani no Naushika.

Ok... I need some help downloading and converting a video from a website. The site is password protected (I have a login and password, though), and after digging around in the page source, it seems that it is a flash movie that is called via a javascript. I can't figure out how to get a direct link to the video, though, or if it is even possible. I'll copy/paste the page source below, in a spoiler. If anyone has an idea of how to do this, I'd appreciate it. If I could get a direct link, I have a program that can probably capture the stream and save it. I just can't figure out how to link to it directly. Thanks

Part 2: How the hell do you pronounce Jukkasjärvi? I would probably try to say it YOO-kahs-YAIR-vee, but I'm assuming that's not correct. Umlauts freak me the fuck out, and I don't know what to do when I see one.

I need to buy a new faucet mounted water filter as my old one broke due to me putting too much pressure on it in ways I shouldn't have. No not like that you kinky bastard. From what I've read: Pur filters might develop random leaks, Brita filters have connectors made of cheap plastic that might randomly pop off my faucet, and I've seen no helpful Dupont reviews anywhere. Anybody have any helpful advice? I don't want anything that takes up too much space, I put filtered water into a gallon jug to put in my fridge.

That is, as you said, not correct. It's a Finnish word actually rather than Swedish. When I am not in such a terrible hangover, I might help you find the real answer.

Possibly one of the funniest things ever is to listen to Swede's that wont realise that and try to pronounce it in a Swedish fashion. Ok, trying to pronounce anything in Finish is fairly entertaining, people of all ages laugh themselves silly when they take a random product and try to read the Finish instructions.

Incidentally, Swedish sounds a bit remniscent of a more complex German. I think I'd go crazy if I tried to learn its accentuation.

Actually, it is two insults. The top one is Swedish and means "Your mother has a flat forehead" and the bottom one is supposed to be Italian for "You dirty whore"

Not at all. Squaresoft wasn't a part of Nintendo, you know. (Sure, I can't recall them doing games for Sega, but if Sega did show signs of winning the war, I can see Chrono Trigger for the Genesis.)

Phantasy Star IV was made of all kinds of win, for one. Sure it lacked the sheer beauty of CT or FFVI, but then again it was Team Sonic doing all the work. They stuck to simple but nice.

They are good, the best candy you can possibly is, however, Fazer sweet liquorice *yummy*. Unfortunately the only place you can find it in bigger quantities is on the ferries that go between Sweden and Finland...

Is that real liquorice or faux? I didnt think they made the real stuff anymore.

You usually buy it in sticks packed in white boxes with this face
(http://kuvat2.iltasanomat.fi/iltasanomat/iDoc/1301439-lakupoika160.jpg)
upon it (politicly correct, anyone?). Wow... I'd be wary of eating much of that. Looks like a steroid, and acts like a steroid. Also:
Recently researchers have demonstrated that doses of licorice root extract, delivering the constituent glycyrrhizin in amounts similar to that contained in standard medical doses of the root, rapidly and significantly lowered levels of circulating testosterone in males.[6]
I've always hated licorice, anyway.

Damnit. And I like licorice, too. :(

Most licorice candy isn't real in the states because of this. It's just licorice flavored corn syrup.

Q X+3: I have a project coming up soon in school where we are supposed to speak for about 12-15 minutes about something in an individual or population that is interesting from a genetic point of view. Not all that long ago we had a similar assignment where they told us to speak about something that was interesting from a systematic point of view and I spoke about my beloved monotremes. I am not sure if I want to speak about them again (even if they are incredibly cool) and was wondering if anyone here have some nice alternatives. Any ideas?

Genetic point of view, let's see...
How about the fact that most African-descendent males seem to have a much easier time with high notes when singing than their Caucasian equivalents? Start off with Michael Jackson and go from there, maybe?

again, a matter of taste (opinion is funny like that :p). and by "technical terms", what aspects, specifically, are you referring to? Range? I don't know of any male singer with more range than Rob Halford or Geoff Tate; melody/harmony? this goes right back to taste/perception (also, are really referring to all singers, or just ones that are easily accessible via pop-culture?).
also, I'm sure that you are going by "popular" music -- in this context, black musicians tend to get more exposure (by contrast, opera singers typically don't get much press, and are therefor largely unknown -- though, AFAIK, most of them are white). I'm sure that in your personal experience that this assumption may be true (at least from a particular perspective); but making such a sweeping statement about ALL singers indicates to me that either a) your experience with music is limited to certain genres, or b) you are confusing fact with opinion (and vise-versa).
just an observation.
not trying to derail the thread, so I'll leave it alone at this point.

Mice have been produced from two female parents. They live 30% longer, and are smaller. This is likely related to the very interesting genetic phenomenon of gene silencing and epigenetics. 'There are going to be real problems,' said organiser Dr Scott Gelfand, of Oklahoma State University. 'Some feminists even say artificial wombs mean men could eliminate women from the planet and still perpetuate our species. That's a bit alarmist. Nevertheless, this subject clearly raises strong feelings.'
Yep, thats right women. We're creating new technology so we can replace boobs & vagina just so we can all be gay and have circle jerks.
Tomorrow we will murder you all!

Two questions:
Q17: Where can I buy a badass longcoat? I want one, but all the ones I see being sold are either too goth (black lipstick and gloom goth, not the superior chainmail and sword goth), too wimpy (lots of business-style longcoats, not looking for that), or for women.
Q18: Is it some sort of cultural thing in japan to wear a helmet or head covering with only one eye exposed? I see that semi-frequently in FF games. Also, I was told that Auron's (of FFX) habit of carrying his arm in his kimono and carrying a stone jug of saki around was "a very ronin thing to do". Explain?
-

Also, I was told that Auron's (of FFX) habit of carrying his arm in his kimono and carrying a stone jug of saki around was "a very ronin thing to do". Explain?
The first is, I think, simply a matter of coolness. Having one eye covered is a surefire way to tell someone is a badass, due to the connection with eyepatches (which are badass as any scar is).
The arm bit, I believe, harkens back to the tradition of a samurai who had lost his master (a ronin) carrying his arm that way to symbolise the loss of an arm.
The second is just something I picked up somewhere, I've no idea how true it is.
-
The one-eye helmet/eyepatch thing relates to the loss of depth perception - "I don't need to see how fast it's coming, one eye is enough to beat you". It also relates to being unable to hear properly and thus not needing to.
As for the "very ronin thing to do", I haven't heard of anything similar to what Agita mentioned. I'd think it's related to the need to be constantly alert, however, which a ronin didn't need to do (as opposed to samurai, who were supposed to be ready to draw their swords at any time). Usually it's the right arm (AKA the sword arm) that's in the sleeve, too.
Another possibility is that since a gi can get in the way when you fight, one arm was worn out of the sleeve so the fighter could merely push it off his shoulders if need be (this is a common schtick in samurai stories, and the easiest symbolism would be found in Genjurou Kibagami of Samurai Spirits/Shodown fame). This is something a samurai couldn't do since a samurai is expected to look as impeccable as feasibly possible.

Q19: I remember a picture, I think maybe from an online comic, of a party of adventurers that included a pixie and a big bald warrior dude. I know it's not much to go on, but does anyone remember anything like this?

Depends on where you want to go, really. When I was in Paris this fall, I discovered that the French have absolutely no compunctions about charging double for something just because it says "Paris" on the map where you are.
-
Yeah, Paris isn't happening. If I want to see garbage and street crime, I'd go to Detroit. And feel safer than I would in Paris.
Here's the big thing, how can I find a deal on airline tickets? I literally can't find anything cheaper than about a thousand dollars to get across the Atlantic. (I might just take it down to one place, I could literally do a round trip ticket for the same price as a ticket one-way. I might just get a round trip to/from Finland and explore around from there, as that was the primary idea.) However, that's going to be a huge expense even than, how can I cut the price down? I'm already flying coach, red-eye, and with layovers.
Need to know if my Visa Checkcard would work (My Uncle and Aunt were in Prague a while back and their visa didn't work a few months ago. Then again, I've heard things about Prague...) If not, how much cash to bring, and how to keep it secure.
Need to know if there's any weird laws that someone who didn't live there should know. I'm assuming that it's frowned upon if I steal something or cut someone, is there anything that isn't common sense?

your visa check card should work for most transactions, and will save you from paying excessive currency conversion fees.
get the good rail pass, sleep on the train.

Yeah, Paris isn't happening. If I want to see garbage and street crime, I'd go to Detroit. And feel safer than I would in Paris.
Fuck that shit. Street crime is a minor risk. Just stop driving a car and reduce your chance of getting killed in a car accident and cheat death in the super dangerous Paris.
-
I'd like to, but if I moved into town closer to where I work, my rent would literally triple. I am currently not able to afford that.
Maybe comparing Paris to Detroit was a little unfair though. But I still would like to say that I am not interested in going to Paris. At all. The topic of me going to Paris is now closed.
-
Paris is kind of a generic choice, isn't it? Come to Finland.
-
My brother's ex-girlfriend went to Paris.
She was literally separated from her group by a band of gypsies who then attempted to basically bully her off somewhere else. Luckily, someone else in the group saw that and they threatened to call the Gendarmes. An old gypsy women literally cursed my brother's ex as the band moved along.
I know that anecdotal evidence isn't particularly convincing, but I thought it was an interesting story.
EDIT: And keep in mind I'm only planning to go to Finland. If I can't save up enough money, I'm not going this summer. (It's going to cost at least a grand for plane tickets, I estimate that I would need at least three grand and assume that's not enough).

Yeah yeah yeah.... My grandfather went to the Karelian Peninsula and the Soviet Union attacked.

My grandfather went to Greenland because they thought the Germans were going to attack, and they never did.
My Grandfather also says that Greenland is a boring place.

-
Q21: Why does it seem people can't differentiate what I think from how I feel?
A21
well -- that depends ....
how we feel about things is derived from what we think of them (and how we have come to identify those things and what we have come to identify with).
as such, if you feel a certain way about a "thing", then that is indicative of what your thoughts are of them -- which is representative of our experience with those things.
conversely, if you have certain thoughts on a "thing", then, naturally, those thoughts generally lead to a certain set of feelings about that thing.
conclusion -- thoughts and feelings are often inter-related.
does that make any sense, or did I just miss the entire point of the question?

I think it's close. Basically, what I think about something and how I feel about something isn't always the same.
I may not have anything against, say, ballerinas, but still feel uncomfortable when one of them spins near me. Except it sometimes gets much, much more complex.

I would totally try both lutefisk and the rotting shark if offered. Although I would prefer not to do so in the same night. This is me, I have eaten things not normally considered edible because I was curious (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ExtremeOmnivore).

Q22: Alright, I need some expert food advice, something I only rarely ask for.
I am cooking something for someone I like an awful lot. I was thinking of a recipe I devised a long time ago.
I like to make a bed of leeks and olive oil, and put some catfish filets over said leeks and cook the whole thing together. The leeks become nearly liquid and impart a really nice blended taste to the fish. (I usually add cracked pepper to the top)
I would like a side dish. I want to make something somewhat starchy that's both low in fat content and doesn't consist of more than 2-3 ingredients. (I cook Gordon Ramsay style, I like simple recipes that are hard to screw up b prepared with skill).
Also, anyone have a wine suggestion? Other than fish goes with white wine, I'm not sure what to get, and my personal favorite (Scuppernong) would be waaaaay to sweet for this dinner I think.

We have it here in Minnesota too. I have heard however that it is more popular here than in Scandinavia, which is odd.

As it turns out, there's a good reason why rice is considered one of the perfect side dishes for fish - it's easy to prepare.
One thing about white rice is that it doesn't look very appetizing when it's all sticky. Fortunately, there's a simple way around that. Add two parts water to one part rice. It'll literally be swimming; you can tell when it's done by picking a grain or two off and taking a nibble - if it's a little hard to chew, then it needs more cooking. Add salt to taste.
The good news about rice (particularly when cooked this way) is that it's VERY hard to mess it up. The other good thing is that thinking up a good addition or two to it is also very easy. You shouldn't need to go nuts here since it's a side dish, a few thinly sliced olives or peas and spices (make sure you pick something mild to complement the pepper that goes with the fish) can do the trick just fine.

Q.23: I now face the hardest decision I have ever made. Mark Knopfler and Nobou Uematsu play on the same damn day, at the same time.I have already bought tickets to see Uematsu but not Knopfler. However the latter is a god in his own time but to see him I must sell my ticket AND find a way to get to the other end of Sweden. So my question is, what would be the best argument not to go see Knopfler so that I might save some money and possibly have some friends come along?

Because Nobuo Uematsu is a god in his own right and if you don't go, I WILL excise your guts.
Further: in my experience, whenever you have something that is certain and something you could try to go for with a slimmer chance of succeeding, going for the latter is sure to land you with neither.
-
It is sad but true, I just needed some confirmation. Even if I prefer the work of Knopfler over Uematsu (a friend of mine thought of quitting our friendship when I said that) but I do have tickets to Uematsu already and as I only have to commute for an hour to get there and home. This will not stop me from dying a bit inside ... Knopfler :bigeye *sob*

If it helps any, Metallica happened to do a concert right where I live and I didn't have enough money for the ticket, for which I'm sure I'll be regretting for the rest of my life.
Just... kinda think of me as a spiritual tag-along, because I'd rip someone's liver off with my bare hands to see Uematsu live.

I was in a similar dilemma when Metallica was withing 30 miles of here and I didn't have enough rancid hot dogs to fill their tour bus and spray paint "Weiner Patrol" on the side when no one was looking.

do you mean when saying the letter itself, or within a word? I have no idea what you're talking about.

Clarification: The letter itself as in "Plan: Z", "X, Y, Z" and so on

I've personally never run in to this.
I'm assuming that you're not from the U.S. (based on the wording of your question) -- I suppose that it is an issue of accent as opposed to mis-pronunciation (as subtle as that difference may be).

In many dialects of English, the letter's name is zed, pronounced /?z?d/, reflecting its derivation from the Greek zeta (see below). In American English, its name is zee /?zi?/, deriving from a late 17th century English dialectal form.

well, I guess that the answer is right there in the part that I just put in bold.

Well, it's not really "wrong", per sa -- just a different dialect (at least according the source listed) -- but yeah, I get get your point.
-
Well, theres always saying it like 'zag'
-
It's not quite pronounced the same way, "C" uses the "S" phonic that Swedish uses (more or less), "Z" is more "buzzy", if that makes sense.
It could he quite possible that Swedish just doesn't have that phonic and therefore you can't hear it (When a young child learns a native language, they tend to forget what phonics their native tongue doesn't use to the point of not being able to hear it as an adult. American English speakers have trouble with the rolling "R" phonic for the most part, I had to train my ear to even hear it as I didn't automatically until I was 15 or 16 and taking my second year of Spanish. Likewise, I discovered only two days ago that in Finnish, "u" and "y" are different phonics.)

Q. 30: Should I re-read "The hitchhikers guide to the galaxy" or start reading Robert Jordan's "The Wheel of Time" series?

that depends, on how much time you need to kill?
if its a week, the hitchhikers
if its a couple months... then wheel of time.
otherwise, both..

The first few books of WoT are good, then it starts getting annoying/redundant. I soooo wanted to rip that freakin' braid of Ninyvae's (sp?) head after about 5 books... So I'd say go for WoT.

yeah, but #'s 6, 9, and 11 MORE than make up for it (and 7 won't be as frustrating as it was when it first came out, since you can now just roll right on to 8).
besides, Nynaeve redeems herself enough to let you overlook the braid-pulling (if by nothing else, then her little bit at the end of KoD completely erases all of her annoying b.s.)

it would be epic if in a Forsaken fight, Nyn got her braid burnt off.. bale fire it, so it never existed?

I'm not reading 5 books of 1000+ pages to get to the good parts, I'm sorry.
it's all good (well, okay, book 10 did drag a bit) -- it's just that it keeps getting better as it goes. I never said that the first 5 books suck; quite the contrary -- as a matter of fact, even with book 2 being a bit of a low point, the first 5 are completely awesome. That would be like saying "I don't want to play a druid through 20 levels because I won't get shapechange until level 17". Additionally, one annoying character doesn't ruin anything -- the thing is, she's intentionally annoying, and for good reason (as it relates to character development).
It just so happens that my very favorite scenes happen to be in 6, 9, and 11 (with specific ones in 4, 5 and 3 being up there pretty far).

Think I'll go with WoT for a while and see where it takes me. Nanshrok's has given the series the lowest grade I have ever read so it seems promising enough.

Q36: When trying to update Windows Vista on my desktop PC, I get an error code that indicates that it was denied access to some file it needs during the update process. WTF should I do here? Reinstall? I have a copy of Windows 7 that I could stick on there (it is licensed to be valid on up to 3 PCs). I'm thinking of just upgrading to that, but I know there are some hardware problems with this PC. So I'm worried the installation might fail, and I'll be stuck with a brick till I can find time to troubleshoot the hardware (I think it's a MB problem...).
-
Are you opposed to just switching to Linux? :P
If yes, I won't claim to be an expert, but I'd say get rid of Vista and get Win 7 on it. At least 7 is less of a pile of shit than Vista is. What kind of hardware problems are you expecting, specifically?
-

I can't really just swap to Linux. I use too much software that is windows only. I have used Linux in the past, though, and do like it. I just don't like dealing with compatibility issues. I don't have time for that shit.
This PC gives all kinds of crazy errors, especially when you first start it up. I get POST codes and sometimes the PCs just fails to start (the hard drive spins up, but nothing shows on the screen, and I have error lights lit up on the case). It also sometimes just crashes hard after you get it started (bluescreen dumps, or sometimes just locks up). Strangely enough, most of this seems to go away after it's been on for about 5 minutes, if you can get it to start (which I always can). So I think it is some piece of hardware somewhere that for some reason only works after its warmed up.
I suspect its on the motherboard because I've already replaced the hard drive, memory, and graphics card, and still get the same kinds of errors. The onboard USB controller also totally quit working, and I had to install a PCI-based one (which oddly enough can also control the on-board USB ports just fine...).
I know I should replace the MBoard, but... it still works, and I'm a lazy bastard. I don't want to have to go look up one that is compatible with all of my hardware. :P
-
Well, I guess it's gonna be either replace the motherboard or risk errors with Win 7. Honestly, preferably do both. Can't really give much advice than that. I like to think of myself as savvy, but I'm definitely no expert, and especially not on hardware.
-
Go to Win7 and that will be a better experience for you over all. As to the BSOD (blue screen of death) there are 3 causes of it. Hard drive failure, OS corruption/failure, Memory errors. Since you already changed the drive we can probably rule that out. I would run a memory scanner on your PC to make sure you Ram hasn't gone bad. If it is an OS issue doing a fresh install of 7 should handle that, the OS issues can also be things that tie into the OS on a low level such as drivers and AV software.

Q 37: Other than the obvious route of just gradually increasing the amount weight they bear, what's a good way to condition the feet to comfortably support more weight?
"Lose weight instead" wouldn't really be a helpful answer. I'm considering doing some pretty severe strength training and that's just going to make me heavier.

otherwise, it really is simply a matter of conditioning (i.e., the obvious). you may try hiking with a significant load in your pack -- the faster you walk, the quicker your feet will toughen-up (of course, this will also involve suffering the initial blisters while your foot skin also toughens)

Q.38: I'm composing a list of things I want my players to ask themselves about their character since they are quite low on fluff and I try to do a 50/50 game when it comes to RP vs. Fighting, mostly because the group lacks a proper tank and since they are all quite new to this they need a carrot to widen their personal stories. I've come up with this so far
Two people that are/were important to them
2 minor fears/phobias
1 greater fear/phobia
What is your personal motivation for adventuring?
Favourite food?
How did your family look like when you grew up?
How do you hope your death will look like (a glorious battle, old in a warm bed, saving a friend/lover, OD, those kind of things)?
So for the question: What other stuff would be good to include here?

I'll look it up in detail once I get home, but take a look around for something called the "10-minute background". It's basically what you're looking for, and was first posted on the WotC forums, but has been used at least once around here. Check the current OOC thread for the game "The Maker's Crown" in the PbP section, perhaps.
Q 39
What ways are there to quickly insert mathematical operators, especially 'letter-like' symbols like "element of" on the fly while taking notes on a netbook (in a physics lecture, for the record)? Alt codes seem to either not work, or I'm too stupid to use them on this thing (they work fine on my desktop). EDIT: It may have to do with the fact that I use Linux and OpenOffice on this comp.

Q40: I've got a zombie apocalypse campaign on Myth-weavers that needs a replacement GM (our current one is swamped under massive combined amounts of homework, tests and whatnot). Is anyone interested?

Keep a pool of characters in a Notepad* window open while you work, and copy-and-paste?
* or equivalent

It's a possibility, I guess. Anything even more convenient? I guess I could fiddle with Writer and set some character combinations to be autocorrected to the symbols I want.

Q41: What should I buy my wife for our 5th wedding anniversary? :D
It's coming up in about 2 weeks, and I am drawing a blank. She's your typical "girly girl", likes shopping, clothes, shoes, etc. She suggested not to get her jewelry, which makes things more difficult... She's also kind of picky about clothes, and I suck at shopping... so if I get her clothes, she'll probably wind up sending them back, lol.
We are going to Hawaii for New Years, which is kind of like a 5 year honeymoon, but I'd still like to get her a gift. I know she wants a smart phone with internet access, so I was thinking of that... but it seems like they give those damned things away, so it's kind of too cheap to be a gift. :lol (Of course... the monthly plan isn't free... so it could be an ongoing gift, I guess...)
Other ideas? I'm thinking in the 500 bucks ballpark should be good since we're taking that vacation and have bills to worry about, but good gift suggestions that cost more or less are welcome.
-
She's your typical "girly girl", likes shopping, clothes, shoes, etc.
How about a giant Hello Kitty plushie? :p
Alternatively, if you don't mind being somewhat unoriginal, I'm sure a big coupon for some prestigious shoe shop would make her happy.

Appeal to childhood.
Giant Pooh.

I second this idea. Giant plushie for girly girls = win.

I can't help with cloths but if she wants a smart phone and you decide to go that route I can help. Which one depends on the needs, comfort level, and carrier.
If she likes them (any you are on AT&T) then the iPhone is probably a good choice as it is a nice toy. They aren't what I want but many people like them for a reason. This however does force you onto iTunes, which I have had many complaints about recently, if you aren't already using it with an iPod.
I would strongly recommend a touch screen Droid phone if she is even the least bit technical. Droid phones offer a fair bit of customization that she may like but if she isn't into tweaking her toy then you should probably favor iPhone over droid when it is an option. Avoid the Blackberry stuff over all. Their apps suck compared to the exact same ones on iPhone and Droid phones.
-
I wound up getting her a Droid X and a few other things (a watch, which she said she's probably going to send back, and a jacket and hat that she had in her amazon account but hadn't ordered :P ). At first, she was skeptical about the phone, saying she didn't really need it, and was even talking about sending it back. Then I finally got her to try it out, and now she's going crazy over all the stuff it can do. :lol She especially likes the Voice to Text feature, and how you can use it to search the web, write emails, etc. So far it seems extremely good at transcribing what she says right "out of the box", which is really damned impressive I think.
Some of the apps (which we haven't had time to add or play around with yet) sound amazing, too, like the one where you can take a picture of something and the phone will look it up and tell you what it is, down to comparing prices at local stores, etc, I think. It's fkn crazy. (Insert Agita giving me a hard time about being old and behind the times here. :P )
-
Which cell did you get for your lady?

You youngsters and your phones! Mine has a calender and even a low resolution colour-screen, that should be enough for generations to come :pout

A screen? I thought you just tapped the lever and the other person would write the message down like a regular person.

That was my previous one, after the tv-crew showed up to interview "The man without a cell-phone" for the 90th time I felt it wasn't worth it any more :D
-
Get Skyfire browser it is faster and handles web pages better than the native one. I also recomend Google skymap as an awesome toy, star charts that tells you what you are looking at. Google translate is another fun app. While I think googles (the picture search app you were talking about) has it the barcode scanner is awesome as well, especially for shopping. Flashlight app is good but can be a battery killer.

Q.42: Anyone know of a place were I can find some kind of info on the strength of different venoms? More precisely I am trying to get some kind of number on how venomous sea snakes are compared to their land living relatives.
Also
Q.43: I'm heading to Malaysia in February and the flight company wants me to select a greeting for some reason. Since I can't speak a single word of Bahasa Malaysian I wonder which of the following is preferable (if possible, I'd like to confuse someone with this): Tun, Toh Poan, Datuk Seri, Datin Seri, Tan Sri, Puan Sri, Datuk, Dato, Datin.
-
Q43
Tun is basically Mr.
The rest are titled variants. Except for the second one which I'm pretty sure you mistyped or something.
-

Yeah, seems it was supposed to be "Toh Puan". Anyone of them mean something like "Your Holiness" by any chance? I'd have a great time with that
-
Nope, those are just the common titles for influential people/minor nobility.
Puan and Datin are just the female variants.
I could be a bit mixed up though. My malay was horrible to begin with and it's been going downhill.

What happens if I have a set of 3 email accounts, 1 of which forwards to the 2nd which forwards to the 3rd which forwards to the 1st again? Possibly may need to assume different email services, but I expect there is a system to deal with infinite loops like this (I cannot be the first person to think of it).

you will get lots of email, the providers will most likely spam filter it once it sees a pattern.

Q45 I'm looking for some movie I saw some years ago. The plot took place in some future scenario where a detective dude (protagonist) got a job from stereotypical attractive woman who had a sister who got herself kidnapped because she had discovered A NEW ELEMENT(!!!). The terrorists who kidnap the sister wanted this element so they could release it into the atmosphere and then upload themselves onto the internet because this new element would kill all of humanity. Somewhere at the end they find themselves inside a game of Half Life. Anyone happen to know the name of this particular movie?
-
Mind you, I've never actually seen the movie, so I don't know if any of the other parameters fit, but the "new element" bit does bring to mind a movie named... wait for it... The Fifth Element.
-

None of the parameters fit. Including the fact that nobody discovers an element in that movie. :P

Fun. I'll file that away under "misleading names", then. :P
-
No, the girl was a new element created by combining the other four. Which was Love. Or something.
-
This element was blue-ish if I remember it right and if they just removed the huge warning-labels from the containers you could've mistaken them for containing propane or something similar
-

No, the fifth element was the perfect being. She wasn't created by the other four. This isn't Captain Planet. She wasn't heart. :P

Q46 Hair-care question from a guy who's totally ignorant in this field! :D
I wear it long. No, I'm not cutting. I like being a hippy. Anyway, it's JUST a few inches too short, so I can't 1) put it behind my shoulders, 2) my ears are too tiny to tuck it back there, and 3) ponytailing means the front escapes after 5 minutes and gets in my face, which is the only part I care about. Normally I braid both sides when I don't want it in my face for extended periods, but that's a pain in the arse to do every time I want to cook or just bend over to pick stuff off the floor.
Are there secret, arcane tricks to making a mane more-or-less behave itself? With +1 shampoos of stop-being-frizzy-and-stay-down-and-outta-my-face?
-
Speaking from personal experience: No. :P At least, not that I know of. I eventually cut mine, partially for convenience and partially for Halloween. It was always making a nuisance of itself.
-

There is only one answer.
CIAPHAS CAIN HERO OF THE IMPERIUM!

I will confirm this. I also cut mine for the same reasons as Boz. The Halloween costume in question require a mohawk.
@Littha: Your answer is a little late. :P

Just make sure not to wear them for very extended periods of time or when the weather's hot.

Could you possibly mean a modernization/cinematization of Cat's Cradle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat%27s_Cradle)?

Q49: Anybody got a link to a good veterinary database site?
Here's the thing. One of the family dogs is sick. He puked a lot of blood about half a week ago (apparently several times as he tried to head to the back room. Since then he's been puking up some yellow-whitish substance every once in a while, and he's puked blood again at least once since (I wasn't around). We took him to the vet, initially they said "worms", then they said "pancreatitis". Thing is, I did some quick research about it and I don't think that's what he's got. First, because he had one hell of an appetite coming back home, and second, because his belly was supposed to be really tender - I just squeezed the little guy up and he didn't so much as sneeze.
I'm worried more about my sister than him, since the bastard has given me grief ever since they brought him home, but still, I don't want him to die.
-

I can send a bunch of links but I've no idea how good they are.

It's probably not technically official, but I believe we agreed on "Monkey Circlejerk Fallacy" in a thread on these boards.

IIRC, the Fallacy Fallacy is "your argument is fallacious, therefore it must be false."
