: Trying My Hand At Living Spell Oozes
: kevin_video April 13, 2011, 02:22:34 PM
So this was brought up to me yesterday when I asked for an ooze build that was CR 20+. Probably closer to CR 30, actually.

I've looked at the template, and I'm not 100% clear on how exactly this work so I thought I'd try it out, and get you guys to guide me right if I go wrong.

I've looked at already built oozes based off of this template, so hopefully I'm right.

Spells involved will be Antimagic Field (6), Energy Drain (9), Enervation (4), Drown (7) and Horrid Wilting (8). If I can't use Drown because it's druid spell, then I'll switch it out for a Sor/Wis equivalent.

Size will be Gargantuan for +1 CR under Improving Monsters, but Huge normally (CL 20). It will also be a Sentry Ooze for +2 CR. It will be of the Antimagic example on the WotC site for an additional +2 for constant invisibility and an extended antimagic field.

Alignment: Neutral (didn't notice if spells were evil or chaotic)
CR: 36
HD: 20d10+200
Speed: 20 feet (close or touch spell)
AC: 20 (10, -4 size, +4 Dex, +9 deflection, +5 natural)
BAB: +15 Grp: +43
Attack: Slam melee +27 (2d6+24/x2 + spells)
Spell Effect: Saves are at 19+spell level
Engulf: Reflex is 19+spell level
SQ: damage reduction 10/magic, spell resistance 30, ooze traits
Saves: Fort +25 Ref +21 Will +25 (+29 against mind affecting spells)
Abilities: Str 43 Dex 18 Con 31 Int 2 Wis 26 Cha 29 (+5 ability points for HD?)
Skills: (2 +Int modifier, minimum 1) × (Hit Dice + 3); Climb, Hide, Listen, and Move Silently
Feats: Ability Focus, Improved Initiative, Lightning Reflexes, Iron Will, Power Attack, Stealthy, +1 feat

Does that look right? It doesn't seem anywhere close to being a CR 36 though. I mean, what ECL 30+ character, or even ECL 20 character, could get hit with a slam of a mere +27? Not to mention that an AC 20 creature would get destroyed in a split second by people that powerful.

Can't you soemthing like finger of death to it or soemthing with long range and wings of fury to totally kill?

I wouldn't mind switching out energy drain as that's got a save against it. Enervation would probably be enough. The spells I have here were suggestions from previous. Another was maw of chaos.

If I am not mistaken, you can only put area effect spells into a living spell.  Disjunction and Greater Consumptive Field are some of my favorites.  Feel free to add metamagic in.

Also I would not worry about the slam attack.  If I remeber correctly, you just have to move into the victim's square and if they don't move out on their turn they automatically get hit with the spell effect.

You are.  You can put Area or Effect spells in there.  (Enervation/Energy Drain works because it has an Effect: Ray.)  Still rules out Drown, though (Target).

You could toss on Glitterdust, Stinking Cloud, and Wings of Flurry-- Will save or blind, Fort save or sickened, Reflex save or dazed.  Web's another cheap fun one, if they don't have Freedom of Movement yet.

MDJ would be terrifying, if cruel.

What about solid fog or acid fog?  If they don't move out the first round, they cannot.

Pretty sure an engulfed creature is treated as occupying the entire engulfing creature's space, so it'd only take 5' of movement to get out (into an adjacent space).  Still, it'd keep them from going much farther.

May want to use Freezing Fog instead, since it also has a Grease effect (and the difference between 1d6 cold and 2d6 acid will be trivial at that level).

What about increasing the saves? Just keep adding to the CHA? That's gotta max out at some point. I mean, I've seen guys with +31 to the poor save, and +47 to their good save, at level 20. Going 10+spell level+CHA can only go so far.

Is its Ability Focus on Engulf or the spell effect?

I guess Engulf. It doesn't specify.

I personally would respond to an MDJ monster such as this with a world-spanning AFTS Photon Torpedo, followed by a polite question regarding prudence in removing the "kid gloves" and if the DM would wish to continue down this path :P
