"Complementary" [3.5]
« on: April 18, 2011, 05:29:21 PM »
There's an article on the WotC site on wizard multiclassing which suggested taking barbarian levels because its focus on physical ability scores "complements" your focus on mental ones. That's... not how it works... :banghead

But what if it was?

Each class has one or more designated "primary ability score(s)". If you have a score as a primary score from any class then it gains an enhancement bonus equal to half your combined levels in appropriate classes. (plus one-quarter your levels in other classes?)
Yes, an lv20 monk would have a free +10 to Str, Dex, Wis and Con, while a wizard just gets +10 Int.

Thoughts? Suggestions on ability sets for specific classes?
In general terms it could go:
Tier 1: No scores
Tier 2: One score
Tier 3: Two scores
Tier 4: Three scores
Tier 5-6: Four scores

My work
The tier system in a nutshell:
Tier 6: A cartographer.
Tier 5: An expert cartographer or a decent marksman.
Tier 4: An expert marksman.
Tier 3: An expert marksman, cartographer and chef who can tie strong knots and is trained in hostage negotiation or a marksman so good he can shoot down every bullet fired by a minigun while armed with a rusted single-shot pistol that veers to the left.
Tier 2: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything, or the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
Tier 1: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything and the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
I believe something like this had already been sugested on the tier thread itself, with the sugestion of weaker tiers geting bigger point buy.

Altough it's just bigger numbers, it does help somewhat, specially for qualifying for special feats and stuff.

What about prcs? Would they count full or not?

Also isn't wizard tier 1? He shouldn't get a bonus at all, because personally that +10 to Int in the wizard is probably more dangerous than the four +10 the monk gets.

In the second part of the post I suggest Tier 1s getting nothing. And note that it's an enhancement bonus.

Classes might offer a choice of primary scores. For instance...
Fighter: Str, Dex, Con, Int, Cha; pick four
Samurai: Str, Con, Int, Wis, Cha; pick four
Swashbuckler: Str, Dex, Int, Wis, Cha; pick four

Barbarian: Str, Dex, Con, Cha; pick three
Paladin: Str, Con, Wis, Cha; pick three
Rogue: Str, Dex, Int, Cha; pick three
