: Sinfire Titan November 04, 2010, 07:23:56 PM
To go with our Anime and Manga thread, I've decided we could use a gaming thread that wasn't based on a p&p game.

With two more weeks for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, I'm hard-pressed to find a new 360 (since moving in with my dad denied me regular access to Midge's). According to TV Tropes, the Dual Blade is being removed in favor of letting you dual-wield your sword and hidden pistol. A bit saddening, but at the same time that sounds awesome!

And to Prime/Kuro: Can you point me to a good arcade stick for BlazBlue? I've been meaning to buy one and get some practice in with it, but I have no idea what brands would be best.

Good luck finding a 360.

I'm playing me some Fallout: New Vegas right now. Though they still didn't fix some of the engine bugs they had with FO3: broken steel, periodically locks the PS3 up so I have to cut the power.

Did Bethesda do that Fallout too? If so, you may need to search for homebrew mods, as they' usually support those mods instead of their own patches (it was that way with Oblivion, save for Shivering Isles).

Nah, Obsidian developed New Vegas, Bethesda just published it. (For the record, it's definitely an Obsidian game--RIDDLED with bugs and glitches--but still worth your money.)

Brotherhood does look really good. I'm sad that I won't be able to play it here since I don't have a TV, though. (Ubisoft is really bad at porting console games to PC, so I can't just wait for the PC version like I normally would--my year-and-a-half-old laptop won't run it.)

Both games use the same engine and the bug that causes random total freezes on the PS3 was introduced in BoH expansion of 3 since I had played somewhere near 50 hours without a freeze before installing it. I only made it about an hour after installing it before it started.

After hearing much hype about it I got to playing Fal from Heaven II mod for Civilization IV.

It's AWESOME(to the point it only could be more awesome by somehow adding giant robots in medieval fantasy)! Some highlights from my current first playtrough:
-My chosen faction doesn't have a specific hero like the other factions do, instead they randomly spawn adventurers that quickly get exp every turn and then can be promoted to any unit I unlocked by paying gold, so after some time I end up with a bunch of "heroic" troops.
-First other player I meet is psycho pyromancer.
-Galadriel elf chick found while exploring the sea.
-Another goody two shoes factions builts a gate that spawns a new civilization consisting of angels, taking over the city in wich they apeared by allying with the faction that allowed their existence. Other good units that die join their side.
-Pyromancer turns against me and sends waves of skeletons! And flaming zombies that explode when killed!
-Ah, I finished researching gunpowder! Eat guns you dark mages!
-A bunch of enemy troops sneak trough my defence forces and advance towards an unprotected city!
-I promote an adventurer I had building exp. He proceeds to single-handedly defeat a dozen enemy troops.
-As casualities builds up the "armagedon counter" builds up, spawning the four horsemen of the apocalypse one by one!
-Super-plague dizimating my population, I'm kinda screwed...
-Hey, wait, my leader can change one of his abilities every X turns! I pick one that increases all my city's health for free!
-As I push into enemy territorry he spends his once-per-game spell that causes meteors to fall on all my cities, but I keep pushing forward!
-Hey, mythril mine found on eneny territorry! Conquer the nearby city and call my troops back to equip them with shiny new weapons!
-Third horsemen of the apocalypse spawns, aparently gets insta-killed right away due to unknown reasons.
-Finally find the enemy capital, protected by several high level firebal-throwing mages...
-I get special medics specific to my factions that allow me to quickly heal from fireball burns.
-Doesn't seem like there's any upgrade to increase their healing abilities, so I just increase their basic combat.
-Final assault on the enemy, damn summoned skeletons keep chump-blocking my elite troops...
-With the skeletons out of the way my medics attack and kills his mages! WITH THEIR BARE FISTS!
-One enemy down, six more to go!

It is a great mod. On of its authors hangs out on another forum I'm on and we actually got some of the first looks at it. It was supposed to be released as its own game at one point but that fell through before it was entirely done.

You don't need to actualy get them on the first run.

If you beat the game you can save and make a game++ where you keep your money and PP, making unlocking secrets and BM considerably easier.

Seriously, trying to get the BM on your fist run is possible, but kinda of a masochist experience, in particular because in several levels you'll have little to no room for error. I talk from experience.

Some of OG2's battle masteries are a pain indeed. It's easier if you are already familiar with basics of Super Robot Wars and the series' tactics.

But like Oslecamo said, battle masteries - completely optional. Just enjoy the game!

Started replaying The Witcher. Better than the TV series, but due to the lack of translated books, haven't read the original works yet...

The Witcher is cool. I heard the English translation sucked hard, but they improved it in a patch/special edition or something. The original Polish dialogue is fun and tries to sound like if Sapkowski was on the writing staff.

You watched the Witcher TV series? I'm sorry. I really am.

Killer7.
Very disturbing.
Very weird.

Bare bones, you could describe it as an adventure game+railroad shooter. But that description doesn't do it justice. Few words do. Instead, just watch these (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_a_N406U18g&feature=related) videos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ra51ZcAAYxc). Warning. Spoilers, and NSFW. Oh so NSFW.

I really enjoyed that game, minus the "gotta bang em all" aspect when it came to the female characters.

I'm really looking forward to the sequel, I'm sure I'm going to fall in love with it.  In fact, I love that company just for the fact that if you bought the origional version of the game you got a free patch to upgrade it to the enhanced edition.  Polish people apparently aren't money grubbing bastards!  YAY!

Not sure where else to put this, but I've been playing the old PS2 game Way of the Samurai 2 lately.  I like the mobile fights, and the needing only a sword (tengu mask optional) to fight effectively, as long as you're really skilled with it.  I've been wondering, and maybe someone familiar with both the video game and the book can help me, how close can you get to that kind of combat with a Tome of Battle character?

Not very, I'm afraid. D&D isn't built for semi-realistic combat. ToB is more appropriate for things like Wuxia. Being all dodge this, parry that, counter that would work best with a system that has parrying built in. Though you COULD potentially pull it off with feats such as Karmic Strike, Sidestep etc..

For foes that are resistant to throws, pushes or other Force powers, cutting them down is the only way to go. And no you'll want to use your saber most of the time still. The styles are pretty cool.

Yeah, in the first game I saw little to no reason for using the lightsaber. The combos were repetitive and the powers were much cooler. Nothing said "Fuck you" to a bunch of enemies like sending them flying and shattering them against the walls.

Lightsaber crystals aren't just color templates now. You can choose different crystals (that you collect via holocrons) and pair up combinations (main saber and secondary saber) for different effects.

And dismemberment is active in this game. Stormtroopers and humanoid enemies can lose body parts, or disintegrate (if using the black crystal), set on fire (if using the fiery orange), etc etc.

Quite a lot of combos I might add, though you usually tend to just mash the attack button and use the lightning button to stun foes that keep blocking your swings.

The only annoying enemies are the machine-based ones, or the mechas if you prefer to call it. There's really no very safe way of fighting them without them just standing there and kicking you and stuff. On an Unleashed setting, getting hit a few times would kill you.

And the flaw with blocking still remains. There's simply no way to even keep yourself perfectly safe against a barrage of lasers in a singular direction, much less hope to even have enough deflections worth a damn.

Also despite having Force Lightning maxxed out, you simply cannot clear a room of troopers. More troopers than the maximum amount of bolts you can spare (IIRC 5). You can spam Push pretty quickly, better choice for making a room come alive with bouncing troopers.

The Force Rage ability is pretty damn bloody sweet. Can't really describe it, but every ability gets a major boost, including your typical lightsaber strikes, which erm, is more like using close range saber throws than actual holding and swinging.

Got a Wii back at home and I'm thinking about buying Force Unleashed II for it, because it's quite a bit cheaper here. I liked the first one despite the obvious bugs, but the new one seems rather decent. My question here is, do you people consider the Wii version to be a worthwhile investment?

Not really. The game is WAY too short. Like 3-4 hours, unless you're very anal about the challenges, and with repeated practice you can blow through most of those anyway. (Heck, even I have a few platinums, and I didn't play for that long...)

By the by, now that my computer can handle such games, I've been playing Dragon Age: Origins. Very fun, but is there a single point in the game where you don't run into Black and Grey Morality and Crapsack World moments? Seriously, every so often it makes me feel depressed!

DA: Origins is actually one of the better games out there. It easily rivals BG2 in terms of NPC interaction and storyline.

The thing is, every character that you can talk to has a motivation. Even that stupid Reverend Mother in Lothering (give me the frigging key already!). And frequently the conversations are hilarious (tell the chanter in Lothering "A chanter says "What?"" for loads of laughs).

But there are a few places it fails.

The add-on packs were stupidly powerful. I mean, one of them gave you a dagger right at the beginning of the game that you'd want to use all the way to the end. That was how powerful it was. I won't even go to the other items in the add-on packs (like that starmetal sword... GAH!).
Alistair has a total change of character and goes from compassionate joker to you must kill him whiny git in 0.03 seconds.
If you play it wrong, the ending can be incredibly depressing. I don't know if I call this a fail, though.

But I didn't find too many grey ambiguities there in play. Maybe I just missed the nuances.

I always go for Leiliana, though. Morrigan is too whiny for my tastes. Always whining about people being happy, not getting any advantage, etc., etc., etc. Just shut up already. For someone who claims that people should be more individualistic and do what they want, she gets incredibly uptight when people do their own thing and not what SHE wants.
I took entirely too much satisfaction in letting Flemeth live so that she can ambush Morrigan in the future (or not) and getting Alistair to sleep with her (imagining THAT pillow talk is suitable revenge on both whingers).
SRW is short for Super Robot Wars - a series of turn-based strategy games. Their plot premise is pretty simple: you take several anime series with giant robots, and mix their plots and settings into one thing. Add in original characters, units and concepts to hold everything together like glue.

The results are much, much better than what you'd expect. The titles are extremely enjoyable and offer a decent tactical challenge, too. Well, some of the games are really easy, but you can play them with an aim of unlocking secrets or something. And others are pretty damn hard, too.

One thing though: the series is almost exlusively in Japanese. There is a fan patch for one title, and two others were released in English. Other than that, it's pure Moonspeak.

But it does not matter for me.

Now, to L - it's the newest installment, obviously. Some people are really critical of it, but I am not them. I am almost certainly sure I will like this, just as I liked the previous title, SRW K (which also has its own share of criticism which I mostly do not agree with). It's for the DS. Prime32 linked a preview with attack animations, so you know more or less how the game looks like already.

Oh, trust me. It is really fun. But you have to be into anime (or to be more precise, giant robot anime) or at least do not mind it, to be able to appreciate the series. So it happens.

Also, I think I'll just start linking Jew Wario (http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/bt/jewwario/ycpt/10105-ycpt24) to explain what SRW is, instead of saying anything of my own. He did a great job in his review/mini-tutorial thing. If you have 10 minutes of free time, definitely worth a watch.

It hasn't affected my able to win the missions yet, but if this keeps up I'm probably not going to deploy her that much to avoid repair costs.
 • I've invested a little too much in Lamia, and only just realized she's a mole. Its actually cost me around 14K, and I'm seriously considering restarting.

Level 3 Love (+12% damage to enemies):Kyosuke
Level 2 Friendship (+10% hit and evade):Sanger, Bullet

Don't worry, Lamia doesn't leave your party and take your upgrade money with her, though I hear she's a bit less useful in endgame unless you unlock her broken secret mech on an NG+. (still good, just not as good)
I am reminded of my play-by-posts, where Diceroll-tan is always total yandere for Tengu. He always gets good rolls, which sucks for us players when he's the DM and controls enemies. Likewise, female charactes and characters with female players suffer. Diceroll-tan wants them dead.

Maybe my cartridge just hates her.

From my experience her dodge in OG2 indeed isn't that good, but give her dodge-boosting items and she should be fine. Again, keep near Bullet for relationship, make sure she's flying and don't be cheap with focus/alert, and remember pilots with leadership boost everybody's dodge when they're nearby (mothership pilots always have leadership).

But look on the good side! She gets +3 will every time she's hit! Girl's a masochist. No wonder she gets defensive support. :p

Also, how could you think Lamia
was a mole after she self-destructs in her former masters?

And of course she isn't dead. You should know that nobody truly dies in a SRW game untill you're near the end. And mechas reduced to dust are also rebuilt as many times as needed untill the final showdown.

Haven't gotten that far into the storyline. If it happened in the previous game, I haven't played that one.

I think when I start my 3rd run of fable III I'll go with a male character. Still wondering how I'm supposed to save the maxium amount of lives  :banghead
The amount of money in your Castle Treasury directly corresponds to the number of lives you save. So, put 6.5 million gold into the treasury, you save 6.5 million lives.

In other words, play Real Estate Agent for a while before you enter the endgame.
Okay, I did that for a while with my 2nd character but I didn't get that much gold I think I was a million shy

I just finished Super Robot Wars MX. It is a pretty cool title - made by the same Banpresto sub-team that later created OGs, and it shows. The game has similar feeling, artstyle and mechanics.

This installment was pretty easy though. There was only one scenario that was tough for me (the penultimate one). But then, I am a pretty experienced SRW player. It might be harder for people newer to the series. I am not bragging here - Alpha Gaiden still eats me for breakfast.

The weakest point? Probably the way it treats the shows included. Not that the selection is bad, even Zeorymer and RahXephon (which are terrible and pretty average respectively) are pretty cool as robots in this game. But this simply doesn't give all series justice. Daimos has no plot importance whatsoever to give one example, while Gear Fighter Dendoh has too much (although Dendoh is cool so I do not mind... much). The originals are okay, but nothing special.

On the other hand, it's great to have G Gundam, Evangelion, Dragonar, Machine Robo and I probably missed something cool from the list and will regret not mentioning it, all in one game. And the combat animations are nice and fluid like expected of a SRW title. The scenarios are cool too, and even SRW mainstays felt pretty fresh in this one.

Overall, not the best SRW out there but a good, solid title. If you want to start playing Super Robot Wars, I suggest starting with something else. But if you're a fan of the series and looking to play a PS2 title, I recommend trying it out.

Guess who got his hands on SRW L!

So far, this game looks really, really good. Nuts to any pre-emptive criticism people might have had. The interface is really easy to work with. Setting up supports and figuring out hit chances on map attacks was never so much fun. Graphics and animations are really cool - not only for new series, even old ones have new animations. And almost every unit has a dynamic kill on its strongest attack.

Surprisingly enough, there are no parts to equip. There are, however, pilot parts that increase the pilots' stats and abilities. I didn't reach so far to use the partner system yet, but my hopes are high. Likewise, dunno about difficulty yet. The first stages were not too difficult, but not a piece of cake - you can lose if you are very careless.

Spoilered plot impressions!
Mission 1 is Macross Frontier! VF 25s cannot enter Gerwalk mode as a seperate unit, but they use it for attacks like Ozma here presents. The Valkyrie Fighters are VERY good in this game. Lots of defensive abilities (shoot down, sword cut, pinpoint barriers), AND strong attacks.

Also, for some reason Voltes is working along SMS. It has a lot of HP, and its attacks are very damaging. V-Slash has the base of 5200 damage and requires only 45 energy, making it moderately spammable. Ozma's hissatsu is ~4500 base damage, in comparison, while the VFs' missiles are ~3500 and the gunpod is 2500. Just to give an estimate of how spread damage values are in this game.

Second mission brings us Macross Frontier pilots that weren't present in the first one:

Konig Monster! Yes, yes, YES. I've been waiting for this. Kanaria, you are awesome.

Klan's Pixie Squad Attack! That's right, Nene and Lalamia are in this game, and they already had more lines in one interlude than in the whole Frontier series. And Klan herself kicks ass too. Forget jobbing, that was canon. This is better than canon.

The second mission is the one where Luka gets his shotariffic butt eaten by a Vajra capital ship and they have to rescue him. They're running kinda fast through Frontier's plot, aren't they? Frontier folded towards Earth, by the way, which means another series is introduced:

SEED Destiny! I get Shinn and his friends, as well as Minerva. Apparently in this game we play from ZAFT's perspective like in Z, rather than Kira's like in K. Very, very good. We also had a small interlude earlier when the Gundam Jackers... well, jacked the Gundams. But it was not interactive.

Impulse is not as good as the VFs. Its strongest attack deals only 4050 base damage, and the spammable one is at ~3000. Of course, we know Shinn gets an upgrade. The ZAKUs are predictably weaker. Amusingly enough, Lunamaria's beam tomahawk attack reminds me of Getter Q from MX. She throws the axe and then twists it in the damaged robot.

Also, Brera. But shh. We're not supposed to know who he is yet.

After the mission, we have Ranka singing in the Zentradi ghetto mall (I told you, Frontier's plot moves fast here) with the Destiny folk watching, so I guess they joined in with SMS. But I cannot upgrade units now so the plot moves to other people's POV now. What will happen later? It's a mystery.

EDIT: A few extra comments.
No protagonist yet. He'll probably appear in the next mission, along his robotic maid sidekick.
Nagisa from Iczer-1 is hanging around Frontier, for some reason.
Mikhail's sniper rifle attack looks different whether the mission takes place in space or atmosphere. I hope it's the case for others too.
Edited a little bit.

Forgive me Fallout fans.

Fallout New Vegas is my first experience with Fallout, and I guess that my RPG Perfectionism without the necessary stamina and endurance is making character rerolls (and hence starting all over again) a real pain in the ass, hindering my ability to enjoy and carry on playing the game.

And sometimes, I seem to just fail quests without knowing what the fuck happened. Plus having to access the Pip Boy console to handle all my inventory and shit is plain fucking annoying, then again when you're playing an RPG in FPS mode, the Q = Quest, I = Inventory and M = Map sorta shortcut keys would not exist.

I dunno, I blow off steam from New Vegas frustration by kicking ass in Darksiders.

I don't blame you. Fallout requires some planning ahead if you want to get anywhere - much harder than simply wandering around, though that's part of the fun. The game is also riddled with bugs. Most of the time, quests failed refer to the death of an important NPC to said quest.

FNV is pretty buggy, that might be the cause of failed quests. Otherwise, killing crucial NPCs, doing a quest at odds with another quest, siding with a certain faction, and a bunch of other stuff causes you to fail quests--there are even dummy quests that start and instantly fail if you kill someone important.

It bears repeating. Hokuto Musou is awesome.

It has Norio "The Emperor" Wakamoto doing the narration. That alone would normally make it Epic. Then you add Hokuto no Ken and make it MORE epic.

Nearly everything in the scenery is destroyable by your FISTS OF AWESOME. You actually fill up a certain bar by DESTROYING THE SCENERY WITH PEOPLE. Also, there's people bowling like in the anime - namely you send one guy flying, then that guy hits two others, they hit three others until you have a massive, glorious explosion made of people screaming for help and begging not to die.

By far one of my favorite moments was Shin's Dream Scenario.

Toki: Shin, so long as you try to take everything, Yuria's heart will never be yours. True love is about giving without expecting anything in return.

Shin: True... Love...? I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS!!

Eh, most of the other Daedric Princes don't have realms that would lend themselves to that. Malacath's plane requires levitation and magical breathing to survive, Molag Bal enslaves any mortal he finds (this one actually might not turn out badly; his realm is like a mirror of Nirn), Morrowind already did Hircine, Hermaeus Mora's realm is an infinite library, Azura and Mephala are supposed to be inaccessible to mortals, Oblivion briefly visited Boethiah and Peryite, Sanguine has far too many realms to cover in a single game...

Problem is that there's no in-game ability to respec your character's ability and skill points, and tag choices. So if you realize late game that you're missing out on a few points that means the difference between picking a very hard lock to having to find the key (which quite often on average you won't find it) you're fucked and on your own.

Yeah. And given that it takes a bitching long time to run from one place to another...I think I'll stop playing FNV until enough patches have arrived.

You don't have to, but I'd recommend it. You can start a new character for 2, but it'll be assumed that you got the worse outcomes at most of the major choice points and didn't do any sidequests (many of which are referenced or have follow-up in 2). And, well, with fair warning that I'm a compulsive completionist and hate starting any series halfway through, it is the beginning of the story and you will get more out of it if you start from the beginning.

Where do you intend to go with it?

The game gives quite a lot of bang for your buck magic-wise - magic-specialized characters have a relatively easy time dealing with a LOT of stuff. If/when you get the Talisman of Beasts, you can sub Faith for Magic and semi-specialize on that stat, almost by itself. If you haven't killed the Dragon God yet (sounds like you haven't), you should grab as many Stone of Ephemeral Eyes as possible and suicide about 7-8 times at the Armor Spider Archstone. This will drive your World Tendency to Pure Black, so you can kill Black Phantom Scirvir for the Talisman (which lets you use both magic AND miracles, and uses the average of your Faith+magic stat to determine damage) and the Primeval Demon for a Colorless Demon's Soul (which you'll need to upgrade some equipment later).

Overall though, your Soul Level seems pretty low. I suggest you grab a Morningstar on 5-1 (Fifth Archstone, first world) and go smash some skellies at 4-1. You can also grab a Crescent Falchion +1 there, which will give you bonus damage based on your magic stat AND regenerate your mana while you're at it.

Consider grabbing a spear as a backup weapon. You can poke enemies from behind a shield with it. It's a very effective tactic against most enemies save for the bigger ones.

Also, I finished Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Spoilers ahead.
So you play this guy called Gabriel Belmont. Heaven and Earth have been separated by a spell, souls are trapped in Limbo, demons going around, etc.. So you need to go kill some monsters and take their stuff kill the Lords of Shadow and take their power to reunite them by means of the Mask of God (with the added bonus of reviving your dead wife). Along the way you meet A Girl and Her Golem. You kill her in your dreams, and then the Golem too, because it goes berserk after watching you over the dead girl with a knife in her heart. You take the Golem's gauntlet. Off you go slaughtering the Lords of Shadow (a Lycanthrope, a Vampire Queen, and a Necromancer). When you meet the Werewolf BBEG you learn that the Lords of Shadow are actually the founders of the order you belong to, who ascended to heaven and left their dark sides behind. You kill their earthly aspects and their heavenly counterparts die too, which means you'd slaughter the founders of your Holy Order(tm). Gabriel doesn't care because he hasn't been getting any in years so he needs his wife back. Throughout the journey you're supported by this old guy named Zobek, your senpai the oldest living warrior of your order, and who also happens to narrate stuff in the background as he keeps stalking you. He mentions multiple times that Gabriel either doesn't sleep/eat or does so in unhealthy doses, which makes him increasingly angrier and angrier. After you kill the necromancer, you learn that your senpai Zobek was the necromancer all along, trying to use you to take the power of the remaining Lords of Shadow for himself, and using your dead wife (which you've been seeing on the way) to keep you from realizing it. Then, he's double-crossed by freaking Satan, your dead wife ressurrects you, you bitchslap Satan around a bit... And we can summarize the ending somewhat like this.

Gabriel: Goodgoodgoodgoodgoodgoodgoodgood!!
Satan: Evilevilevilevilevilevilevilevilevil!!
Gabriel: I use the G word!
Satan: AW FU--

Marie (AKA your dead wife): Congratulations, you beat the game. I gotta go to Heaven now.
Gabriel: WTF what is this i dont even
Marie: Oh, and you get to live forever while you're at it.
Gabriel: FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

*cue timeskip after credits, Zobek's in an old church*

Zobek: Ohi Satan's on his way back, you know.
???: I don't give a shit.
Zobek: Stop being such an emo fag, Gabriel.
Gabriel: DON'T CALL ME THAT PUSSY NAME! I'M DRACULA, BITCH!

*Dracula tries to nom on Zobek, Zobek kicks him out of a stained glass window into modern-day world*

Zobek: I can help you die.
Dracula: (cue Darth Vaderish indistinct scream)
Zobek: Foreshadowforeshadowforeshadowforeshadowforeshadowforeshadow.

Despite my choice of words for describing it, the game IS quite awesome.
Currently debating the merits of snagging Dragon Age Origins and Awakening on Steam for less than Awakening would normally cost. On the positive side, this is a very nice deal, since I've never played the latter, don't have my disc for the former, and this would net me all the DLC too. On the other hand, money.

DA is a good game, but it s let down by a rushed completion. You can actually feel it in game. It is all good and snappy until the climax of the game, and then things are all half-complete, with lousy dialogue and just bad all round. A lot like NWN2. I don't know about Awakening, though. I didn't get it because I was so disappointed with DA's last 15-20%.

Where do you intend to go with it?

Basically, this is supposed to be the guy that blasts, and also hit stuff with his pointy stick...

Doesn't PBWT makes the monsters hit (even) harder than normal?

Since I'm with a female char and White Tendency on 1-1, do you think acceptable to try and get a PWWT on 1-1, kill the Executioner (for the armor set she drops) and loot the dragon's lair before going for a PBWT?

Overall though, your Soul Level seems pretty low. I suggest you grab a Morningstar on 5-1 (Fifth Archstone, first world) and go smash some skellies at 4-1. You can also grab a Crescent Falchion +1 there, which will give you bonus damage based on your magic stat AND regenerate your mana while you're at it.

This was the lastest thing I tried, but those skeletons hurt a lot...

Any good place to grind a bit? I was using that Red Eyed Knight on 1-1 as my main grinding method...

Consider grabbing a spear as a backup weapon. You can poke enemies from behind a shield with it. It's a very effective tactic against most enemies save for the bigger ones.

I was thinking that, except I still don't have the required strength to wield it one handed <_<

Even when I have the Crescent Falchion and the Moon Uchigatana, should I keep the spear around?

Yeah, I've played the first one to completion a few times. It might be worth a shot, especially since it would eliminate the need to have the disc around if I want to play it in future.

If skellies are giving you trouble, Miralda will eat you for breakfast and pick her teeth with your pointy stick. First order of business: grab a  shield with 100% phys block rate, such as the Heater Shield (you can buy one for 2000 souls at the Nexus vendor). Second order of business: learn to approach. Early on skellies will be a major problem if they gang up on you. The best strategy in Demon's Souls is lure and slaughter (hence why it's unusual to see more than two or three enemies in one place at once). Parrying is your friend, though it can be tricky to learn (remember that even a failed parry will still cut part of the damage you receive). Skellies only really use three moves: rolling in then finish with a slash, thrust or overhead slash. The overhead slash takes forever to come out and they're rooted in place when they charge it up (though they still spin around) so you can safely roll/run away from it. The thrust has slightly less charge-up but it has a great advantage for you: if you move FORWARD (that's right, FORWARD) when it's coming out, the skellie will step forward, PAST you, and miss, leaving him open for a backstab. If you're using a morningstar, one backstab plus one heavy attack should make him kick it. You can use pretty much the same strategy with the black phantom dual katana skellie: by moving towards him as you stand a fair bit away, he will jump past you and slice at the air. Killing all skellies up to the archway plus the BP skellie should net you around 2000+ souls.

Remember that you shouldn't neglect Strength and Dex. You'll eventually need to use a bow, no matter how boneheaded you are, because there will be enemies WAY beyond the reach of your magic that you'll want dead. Or enemies that take no damage from magic such as the 4-2 Reapers.

SL matters more in the first playthrough, when your defense still means something. Defense stops going up after a certain SL, and on the second playthrough it's pretty much dressing (as is armor). Focus on grabbing items, because those don't go away when you die, and better items > greater SL, especially later on. I downloaded the Asian Version of the game (the one with the soul exploit glitch) and upped a char to 712; until I grabbed the Meat Cleaver I was dealing relatively low damage.

Trust me, the second game and Brotherhood are all worth it. The only thing is miss so far in Brotherhood is the ability to gallop in high speed while riding horses. But since you can go through the sewers as a form of teleport it does not really matter all that much.

Star Wars Force Unleashed 2: Holy fragging hell, the force can do that?
Why is it the books and games take the Force to an absurd super powered levels?

In the original movies it took a lot of effort to choke someone or pull your saber to you. The most powerful Jedi (yoda) had to stand around concentrating to move an X-wing. In the retarded Trilogy, they gained a super jump and dash ability and the more powerful Sith sided of the force is shown to be able to chuck small hover work desk/chairs at people.

In one of the books after the Empire falls Luke walks on lava (jesus anyone?) and in the same series a protege rips a invincible ship out from a sun. Not to be out done, moments before the 3rd trilogy movie starts the animated cartoon takes place and shows Yoda throwing giant ships at each other with a flick of his hand. So when the first game came out it really wasn't too much of a surprise Starkiller ripped a Star Destroyer from orbit or could wipe out entire armies of stormtroopers in his sleep.

Well, SW:FU2 rightly deserves it's acronym. The new Starkiller, code named Buu due to his ability to get more powerful by becoming less of a person than his was before he lost a fight, starts with every combo from the last game but learns to become even stronger. In fact he now has a super sayien mode where he just stops using his arms to attack anymore. I wish I was joking, he really does turn blue and all of his light saber attacks become saber throws that spin around him god of war style.

FU2 tried to fix some problems with the first game. Some endless pits of death can quick spawn you to the top without having to reload. The ones that do you only fall off while answering your cellphone and the ones that don't are everything else. Another fix is now the game don't have to stop and spend a minute loading the very stats you were just using when you hit pause. It ditched the colored XP system since you start with every combo and trait so you only upgrade force powers and force/hp max. Also it fixes the problem where tapping triangle didn't kill everyone in the room for you and the long delay in being able to spam force push to cave in the skulls of, well everything. The maps seem to explode under the constant use of push which is bad considering with the right saber crystal you gain XP for each and every little thing you break Lego style. I mean, where is the replay value in a 2 hours to beat game when on easy mode, without the crystal, or replaying, you can max out four of your seven force powers. Really just play the last stage again and pick the other ending then max out the rest of your powers.

Rent it, murder stormtroops, then stop spending money on star wars so it will die.

Also, watch this youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgHhUZt8j98) for proof the Sith ending is the 'real' ending this time. And you thought Starkiller would just leave Vader alive after he was done with the rebals...

It is called The Force Unleashed, after all. That said, there is a really big discrepancy between the trilogies (although to be fair, we only saw really really old guys, barely-trained students, and a crippled guy wearing prosthetics using the Force in the original trilogy). Of course, that wouldn't be half as enticing for a video game, so I'm willing to let it slide. Never played the second game, though.

Well, the second one is much, much shorter than the first (and yeah, that's a feat) and slightly less lenient on "spam Force powers on everything around you until the scenery stops moving".

I think the Jedi Knight games were a lot better at...well, just about everything. Saber combat, for one, was fast and lethal, whereas any moderately tough enemy in TFU treated a lightsaber as though it were made of foam padding.

A little TOO fast and lethal for me, really.

Although I will say that Jedi Knight 2 did tons better than Jedi Knight 1. In 1, lightsaber combat was just... clunky.

And really, in TFU2, your lightsaber is only any good against Force-resistant enemies. Which you can kill in a single throw anyway.

True, although it helped that all the moves were explained in the datapad. Which was good, because there's at least one jump in the Tier 3 missions that you can't make without using the speed-enhanced jump you've never used before or will use again.

Little-known Star Wars game based around building droids. I only played the demo level as well, but I remember it being surprisingly complex.

Then again, if I know about it, considering how I don't think of myself as much of a Star Wars geek, then it's probably not that little-known.

aww I love it when non-star wars fans  give thrie thoughts on a star wars game...i'd toss out links but about where the frist games events stand in canon but i doubt anyone cares about it....same with the books and thrie timeline of power creep and how they (mainly Zahn and another writer i do believe) fixed most of it...

Moving from SW.. I went to hastings back on saturday after playing MTG,and had htem put a hold on the collector edit or Cata,so i'll have a new book, music,a mouse pad (what i am supposed to do with a mouse pad when i have a wireless optical mouse ???) and a cute lil deathwing

Well, it appears the game is actually fairly short, but at least it's really, really cool while it lasts. The emphasis is on the action side, unlike Armored Core (which focuses a lot on the mecha-building aspect), which isn't a problem for me.

So, has anyone played Super Meat Boy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Meat_Boy)?  A coworker pointed me to it on a good deal at Steam, and I got it for under $4.  It was totally worth that investment.  I've already managed to get two cousins hooked on it.

It's a ridiculously Nintendo hard (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NintendoHard) platformer, although, not nearly as bad as I Want to be the Guy.  I think the whole point is to find that perfect balance between crazy hard and I-almost-beat-it-maybe-I-should-try-once-more difficult.

Anyway, for those of you who played it, I'm most of the way through the salt levels.  I haven't been playing for 100% completion or anything.  I did make the mistake of letting one of my cousins play on my account, and he proceeded to rack up A+ ratings on all of the forest levels.

So I got started on this little bizarre gem called Hyperdimension Neptunia.

What they basically did is take Trinity Universe's game style, fill it with SO MUCH MOE I DIED, and make it about console wars.

The game doesn't just break the fourth wall, it rapes and sodomizes it with an oil tanker.

Having plenty of fun so far.

Dead Money just came out for New Vegas on the PC and the PS3, you could always give that a try. It's definitely not a shooty-bang-bang DLC--if you're familiar with Fallout 3's Pitt, think of that, only here they've actually succeeded at not trivializing survival.
: Re: Video Game Discussion Thread

I've just finished Heavy Rain.

I gotta say, this game really impressed me. It feels not unlike an old-time adventure game, but with multiple ways to get to different results. And now the spoilers. AHOY!
I completed all five trials. I was sure that the last one
wouldn't kill Ethan
because of the main motivation behind the Origami Killer. And while the game sure tried to sell that
Ethan WAS the Origami Killer
, two small details quickly point out how that's not possible.
A) Ethan comments he'd never done origami before in his life.
B) In one of your first scenes with Jayden, he comments in passing the Origami Killer has taken the lives of 8 boys in the last 3 years. Jason only died two years prior to the event, so the one event that leads to Ethan potentially being the Killer (his blackouts) didn't start until one year after the first original victims.
Since half the fun of the game is guessing who the killer is, I was surprised to find out it was
Scott Shelby.
I mean, I'd actually considered him, but Gordi Kramer was before him on my list.
Naturally, when the truth comes out about Gordi, that hypothesis flew out the window. I actually considered Blake for a short while, because the guy is a major asshole.
The first time I played through the final chapter
Norman died, so I did it over so he could live. What can I say, he's cool in a goofy sort of way.

All in all, great script. Doubt they could have pulled a game like this off with a lesser story.

Final Fantasy's got all kinds of problems. "10 was too linear, 12 was too freeform, 13 was too linear" being common complaints. Then you account for the storylines following a formula, and the lead characters often having no personality (especially true in 12).

Actually, I find that that 10 was one of the last few 'good' FFs. 12's problem wasn't that it was too freeform, it's that it was too BLAND. It was like a single-player MMO. 13 at least has been delivering a relatively good soundtrack. But aside from that, there's only a couple of REALLY likable characters, and they have next to zero screentime. The rest can be summed up as too bitchy, too moronic, and too "cooler-than-thou".

And Dissidia would be better if they finally got it through their heads that THEIR ENGLISH VAS SUCK DONKEY BALLS.

I find it more frustrating that you have to collect all the companions before you can embark on any quests. Because every damn quest would raise friendship or rivalry points depending on the choices you made. I'm less worried about party configurations this time round, since combat seems easier for me this time.

I'm still trying to plot out the best route to collect all the companions and work on the relationships as I go along. Its just frustrating that your younger brother (I play a mage) is such a whiny bitch about mages, and he's about stuck with me when I have to go for the elf bloodmage and the gay terrorist.

Not to mention that the captain of the guard is so bloody paladin-stick-up-ass that having any other important conversation choice means you gotta piss her off.

I'm perfectly fine with the relationship values locking when its in full friendship or rivalry mode, but the journey there is frustrating.

Yeah, I've given up understanding Aveline's motivations. It seems to be a toss-up between friendship and rivalry for any given choice.

Varric, on the other hand, is quite simply the best companion in the game. I don't think I ever racked up any rivalry with him.

With Varric, Isabelle seems a little redundant on the Rogue skills side. But hell, Male Hawke + Isabelle is hilarious.

Also, Fenris is surprisingly likable. If I had heard his character concept ahead of time, I would have laughed, but it does work pretty well. Isabela veers back and forth between enjoyable banter and okay-we-get-it-it's-a-sex-joke. Merril...it's all sunshine and daisies until you disagree with her (or even agree with her on certain things) and then MASSIVE RIVALRY POINTS. And Anders isn't nearly as enjoyable to have around as he was in Awakening, where he was basically Alistair with less of a moral code. And had a cat.

Depends on the developers. Developed and published by SE is dicey when it comes to making a purchase. But developed by another team and published by SE is just fine. Take the Star Ocean series (which Enix bought and SE inherited). They were smart enough not to screw with the development team, and thus it remains good.

Likewise with Valkyrie Profile.

 :lmao

On a (sad) sidenote: I bought a game at Play-Asia at the end of January and it didn't arrive yet. Contacted CustServ at the start of this month and they are trying to contact the brazilian's post office since then. No answer yet.

I guess I lost some bucks :(

BTW, Kuro, what do you suggest me for my next waste buy: AT3, Disgaea 3 or Hyperdimension Neptunia? I've been reading good stuff from the last two... and mixed stuf about the first... but I can't get all three (at least, not right now)...
: Re: Video Game Discussion Thread
: Kuroimaken March 30, 2011, 08:40:49 PM
I'll be honest with you, HDN got me with mixed feelings at best. Yes, it has some great gaming in-jokes, but game-wise the system simply isn't THAT attractive.

Ar Tonelico III is shaping up to be at least as fun as its predecessors (I honestly didn't get very far into it yet), which means that's another chunk of my social life I'll lose to stripping songstresses. Disgaea 3 can be pretty fun, though the endgame grinding for specialists (with or without the duping trick) is horribly tedious. (At least they gave you an option so that you can train multiple characters at once by giving you the formation system from Soul Nomad. But still...)

Overall, I suppose I'd say... ATIII > Disgaea 3 > HDN, particularly in the joke department. (And ATIII comes with a side of fanservice if you're not ashamed of enjoying it. There's an actual trophy named "What's wrong with being a pervert?!" in this game. 'Nuff said.)

EDIT: It's all Customs' fault. We have a fucking 47% a year increase in imports and the Guv't doesn't bother with hiring new people, it's fucking frustrating.

EDIT2: If you buy Disgaea 3, DON'T DOWNLOAD THE UPDATE! You'll thank me for it later.

Oh lord, I am preposterously afraid of heights and I played that at my friend's place. He has a projector, so the character was roughly the same size as I am in real life, so I was about to soil myself every time the character I controlled leapt over an edge. It was scary for two or so hours before I got used to it.

Copypasta'd from a gamefaqs thread...

"Reyvateil control. Stripping control. Song magic control. Diving control. Everything is monitored, and kept under control. Nakedness has changed. I got the Light of Hope ending in Samurai Dou 4.
After getting three different factions to realize that the real bad guy is the local lord, going with a foreign girl to have her petition the dismissal of cruel and unusual punishment, getting arrested for it, surviving torture at the hand of the local lord's hot but sadistic three daughters, fighting them in nothing but my underwear, being rescued while still fighting in my underwear, beating the crap out of them, preventing the public execution of said foreign girl, dunking the local lord in boiling water (that was the execution method... he tied someone up and lowered that someone into boiling water like fondue. He turned red afterwards), watching him survive and run away, running after him, fighting his personal ninja squad, realizing he'd made it aboard the foreigners' black ship, ziplining to it with my sheathed sword (in the process, accidentally firing a cannonball into a boiler) and dueling him for the third time, I got to watch him try to throw his sword at me, fail, pull a gun on me, get shaken up by the ship's rocking, be impaled by his own sword (which the protagonist unerringly throws into his heart), watching him stumble into the gunpowder hold, and watching the ship explode from afar. The foreign girl assumes the protagonist is dead, one of the guys mention that's probably not the case because he's awesome, roll credits, cue another regular day at the city's port with some jerk harassing a woman, protagonist pimp-slaps him straight, cue foreign girl shockedly and happily running towards him.
BEST. ENDING. EVER.

After some serious Xbox Live problems, I've finally downloaded Platinum for BBCS.

I can kick Midge's ass when he's using Tager. He's completed 70% of Tager's challenges (and he's recompleted 50% of them after the 1.03 update). I just spam aerial combos, opening up with 6C. She just hits so fast that he can't get a Sledge Hammer off.

And she has the single funniest victory animation ever.

I cant get enough TF2 right. Its such a quick, jump in, jump out, rewarding experience, that it makes it quite fun. The different classes, make it feel like playing a different game, with having to obey different stratagems to succeeded. It also doesnt require a lot of focus, so it lets me listen to podcasts, or audio books, as I play.

Eh, multiple-target fights weren't easy in Demon's Souls either. You could be seriously screwed if a giant kobold and a regular kobold showed up at the same time.

Exactly! You need to flick the analogue stick twice in Dark Souls to change targets, which makes multi-target combat almost universally overwhelming. The design decision makes no sense to me, because it literally un-streamlines the combat system.

OK, let me re-phrase that: fighting multiple opponents at once was considered an UNIVERSALLY BAD MOVE in Demon's Souls. It's the reason those three red-eyed knights on the stairway to the Penetrator were so freaking annoying.

I can actually understand the idea behind the design decision. During certain fights, the camera could occasionally fix at a bad angle while you were trying to circle your opponent, which made for some very cheap deaths. Since not locking on was a bad idea for a dozen reasons, you couldn't change the camera angle while locked on, and now you can (which probably helps to envision the situation when you're being attacked by multiple opponents anyway).

I'm right at the Tarus demon since I restarted with as wanderer -- I fucked my cleric all to he'll since I didn't understand the mechanics.
