Winterhaven has been a small town, tucked up against the northern mountains, for many years. Nestled amongst the trees and fed by a small brook that watered the town, little has disturbed it for quite some time. Even the traders often do not come this way, for there is little worthy of their attention here. Even the farming is peaceful, for despite the northerly location, animals have not ravaged the crops or the barnyard cattle. Only in winter is there danger, and that from the wolves that trail down out of the mountains, searching for better food in the valley forests.

Idyllic and quiet, Winterhaven has recently come under the threat of an Orc band, come down out of the mountains and into the valley, apparently in the search for a better land and easier life. Setting up camp in the forest, they have hewed themselves a small fortress in a clearing, and sent demands of tribute and slaves to the village. When those were not met, a raid carried away many of the young ones from the village, and those who resisted were slain.

There have only been a few from the town who have chosen to stand up to those orcs after that first assault, and it is now upon their shoulders to head into the forest.
Currently, you're all in the centre of the town, possibly at the tavern :P

Combat heavy, and will hopefully run from at least 1 up to 15+

And no, not as inventive a start as I would like, but I needed to get this campaign going. It will wander as it travels.
Roy kicks his heels up on the table in the tavern. He watches a smelly dwarf making a fool of himself at the counter, something about payment taken without fulfillment of duties. Roy muses while looking at his untouched mead. I should be heading out to save those villagers from the orcs, but I doubt I could do it alone. Everyone knows that when you need adventurers, you need to look in the Inn. Someone should be here any minute, looking for help...

Guthfrith stumbles into the inn, his too-tight leather pants squeaking. His black, sleeveless shirt reveals pathetically frail arms, pale and crisscrossed with fresh, still-bleeding cuts and old, welted scars. His greasy black hair hangs down over the left side of his face, and his neck is circled by a rusting piece of barbed wire.

Oh! Woe is me! My farm was reduced to charred cinders! My crops are nothing more than ash; blacker than the depths of my soul. My hearth has gone cold; colder than my heart. I could not fight these brutal beasts, could not stop them from crushing what little in this dark, dreary existence held any meaning to me.

Will no one help stop this madness!?

Roy practically leaps to his feet. "My club shall aid in driving out this menace. He looks around the inn doubtfully, "Will anyone stand with me?"

Attila Priscus walks into the Inn a few seconds after Roy makes his sudden exclamation. With a low, harsh voice with a hint of a fire-like crackle, he says  Your`e blocking the door.  Move.  He shoves the skinny thing in his way unceremoniously aside and walks over to the  bar, whispering to the barkeep who brings him hastily a big beer before he sits at corner table, back to the wall. He ignores anyone talking to him, hoping they will leave him alone. He`s wearing a black travellers coat, hood pulled over his face. You notice his clothes look like that of a noble, but they are worn and tattered. Under his cloak you see a hint of a huge weapon carried on his back. (His greataxe, but you dont know that)

Guth: You smell a hint of sulfur in Attila`s breath when he whispers in your ear.

: Stratovarius September 15, 2008, 03:30:06 PM
Those in the bar glare at the rude and unceremonious entry of Attila, unhappy with his presence. One of those old men drinking in the bar perks up, responding to Roy's outburst. "Well? Are there none at all with the stones to follow this man? I would go, but I am too old to kill more than one Orc. Those of you who are fit and young are cowards if you do not." Rounding on Attila in the corner. "That includes you, you ill tempered lout. You wear the clothes of a warrior, but sit in a bar rather than out there, fighting." Looking around one last time, he cries out. "Are there none with fortitude and strength?".

Big words for a half dead sack of dried bones... Attila mumbles just high enough for anyone with an unusually high listen to hear. (I.E. any normal PC.) His voice carries a hint of old darkness that disturbes those who hear him.

: EjoThims September 16, 2008, 12:58:15 AM
Oh... Woe woe woe...

Even my attempts to find salvation cause only strife.

I am but a worthless shell, unfit to be aided in my revenge. Unworthy of the attentions of any so brave or strong as to face the monsters that have done me so much wrong.

Guthfrith looks at Roy.

You might as well not bother either... I'll just go to them alone, have them finish what the started.

With a sign, Guthfrith turns and walks outside, wondering towards the forest that the he saw the Orcs headed towards after burning his farm.
: Re: Lledrithiedig Choedwig
: TheWordSlinger September 16, 2008, 01:09:43 AM
Roy mutters a choice dwarven curse and dashes after the man. Stop! If you truly wish to commit suicide by proxy, then be my guest. But I intend to vanquish this Orcish menace, even if it means I fight alone. One more arm, no matter how frail, would be a boon against this foe. A single Haugar barbarian was no match for all but the weakest of foes, but when he had an ally to watch his back, he became an unstoppable force. Roy holds his club up for Guthfrith to see, I am in a position to know of such things.
: Re: Lledrithiedig Choedwig
: Stratovarius September 16, 2008, 11:35:41 AM
The man in the bar rounds on the barbarous creature in the corner again. "You are more afraid of those orcs than a poor wounded man? You should be ashamed of your actions and your acts. Should your father's soul be watching you, may he curse you for cowardice! I will not spend my days in the company of a wastrel and a weakling." So saying, the old man finishes his drink and marches out the back door of the tavern, leaving the vile thing to sit in his chair.

"Victory comes to those who remember the lessons of the past, those who do not drink only from defeats cup," a booming voice rises from an ubiquitous dark  corner and lingers amoung the rafters. "I will join you, who knows of the Haugar's rage, insofar as to least discern if these people can be saved."

A tall inhuman figure stretches out from a low chair and throws a coin to the barkeep, and takes unhurried but naturally long strides to the door. He stops and turns to large warrior at a table and considers him briefly. A scaled horned face no more human than a demon is seen in the hood for that glance. Turning away he walks up to Roy and the presumed farmer.

And what of it if his story doesn't ring true, behemoth? My own story would be called unlikely by most who would not simply pass it off as false. You ask this man to divulge his story without relaying your own. Roy replaces his club in it's loop and crosses his arms across his check, But I wouldn't mind hearing a bit more of the situation before charging in.

I am from elsewhere... A place of sorrow and pain, of sadness and darkness. A place cruel and twisted and mean, and I gave so much of myself to try to fight it, to flee the pain and hide from the darkness...

But then there was no one else to give myself to but the land, so I found a place where I thought I would never again be disturbed...

Until the orcs came, burning and hating... Bringing all the pain back again.

The three heroes, mismatched though they may be, stride forth towards the forest where the Orcs have set up camp. None cared to share their history, but each shared a common cause with the other. It was to be their first stride towards a safer world for the town in which they stood.

Two more waited at the inn, unconcerned with the more noble applications of their contemporaries. For them, glory nor safety nor good marked a change in their countenance, but profit and reward. Perhaps they could find returns worthy of their beings. Perhaps.

Crashing through the woods towards the party came a small party of orcs, a scouting party sent to examine the village, before it was assaulted once more by the vile creatures. Spotting the party as they stepped forth into the trees, the two sides prepared themselves for battle.

Roy utters a feral scream as he hooks his club's fangs under the legs of one of the orcs. His tripping attack succeeds, knocking his foe to the floor and following up with a quick strike that gashes the beast across the leg. The success of his attack gives him fresh strength, staring down the other two and letting them know that he is stronger than they thought.

Shaedof takes a few steps back to not get hit by the swinging club of a ferocious orc, and launches an arrow at the left-most creature. The arrow strikes cleanly, burying itself between the ribs and causing grievous harm. The orc wavers, but stays on his feet.

Guthfrith steps forward slightly and pulls his razorblade out quickly, then drags it over his arm, creating yet another crimson slash. The blood that wells up slides down to his fingers, at which point he flings it towards the standing, undamaged Orc, but his attack is misguided, and slips to the side.

The orcs press in around Roy, slashing with their weapons as they cut at his limbs. One strikes home, but he is able to fend off two other attacks, and even get in a quick strike against the creature he had tripped last round.

Roy smashes the orc into the ground as it tries to rise, killing it instantly. Turning his attention to another of the foul beasts, he swings. Overswinging, his weapon skitters past the orc, leaving it unharmed.

Shaedof shoot another arrow at one of the boodied orcs, but misses completely, his bolt buried in a tree past the orc. He shifts again, taking up a position within range of his crossbow, but with a clear path to run away; these orcs are tough as hell!

Guthfrith gashes his arm again, pointing it at that same orc. Sadly, his aim is as poor as it was before, and the magical essence misses.

Clubbing the paralyzed orc in the head, Roy and Guthfrith watched as Shaedof went about his ritual, preparing the ground around the orc before stabbing it in the heart. Renewed from their fight, they jog after the fleeing orc. The trail through the woods is clear, the orc having battered the trees and brush in his headlong rush to be free of them. After marching for some ten minutes through the bracken, they hear the noise of guttural orcish coming from the trees ahead. A quick glance tells them it is not the main camp, but rather a set of outliers, an advance camp.

The heroes quickly gather, conferring over their next course of action.

Need a scout... Roy looks around at his companions. Vargon and Guthfrith would surely trip over their own feet and alert the whole camp. I would be little better. The kobold, however... Shaedof, we need to know about this encampment before we strike. Could you make an attempt to get close to them and estimate their numbers and the general layout of their camp?
Roy looks at the gash across his shoulders. Vargon, would you happen to know any of the spells of the Flonha?

Sure I could go ahead, but I am not as stealthy as the other kobolts for I have chosen a more civilised profession than thievery. I could of course try. Let me first craft a small tripwire, so you can have advantage over the orcs when they show up.

Trap set, the kobold slips ahead through the trees, his small size compensating in some ways for his less-than-silent progress. Tucked behind a tree, a quick glance into the camp shows at least three orcs in view, including the badly wounded one from their prior encounter. That orc is shouting and yelling, pointing back through the trees in the general direction of Shaedof and Roy. The others grumble and argue with him, including once even smacking him, but finally begin to tread ahead, heading down the path towards Shaedof.

The orcs stomp through the trees, making no attempt at stealth, the wounded now in the back, sulking and growling. Shaedof skitters through the woods ahead of them, making his way back past the tripwire without being caught.

Turning and shouting, the lead orc gestures to the left and the right, and the orcs begin disappearing into the brush and digging themselves in, clearly building an ambush for the enemies they expect to follow the trail.

The orcs turn, roaring and shouting at the kobold, and charge through the underbrush, snapping branches and crushing plants beneath their feet. They are quick to rush, and are almost upon the heroes before they react. The first of the orcs leaps towards Roy and Shaedof, only to be caught by the tripwire and slam to the ground a few feet in front of the two heroes. The other orc vaults the wire, his longsword swinging for Roy, catching him across the arm, leaving a red gash.

Vorgon shouts "The Flonha? Yes - but not today, today I have the knowledge of the Wide Shallow Sea. Witness, the Hegwyd are not forgotten!" A bolt of magical energy flies from his hand, blasting the first of the slower orcs. It is a perfect strike, and the orc bursts into flames, falling to the ground.

Guthfrith draws the energy from within himself, tossing it at the nearest orc. His aim once again slips awry, and his energy and lifeforce is wasted.

Shaedof waits till they are in range, then unleashes his mental assault upon the poor creatures. The two nearest orcs crumble beneath his mental assault, their bodies riven and stiff.

Roy, his timing thrown off, swings his club, crushing the orc in front of him in a bloody spray. Paralyzed and helpless, it was an easy kill.

The last of the orcs, wounded from the battle before, sees the actions of the party and turns and flees, his steps once more carrying him further into the forest, leaving his one living comrade paralyzed in the grasp of the small kobold.

An arrow thuds into the ground at Roy's feet, and ducking to the side and looking up into the trees, he sees and hears an orc sentry, for the sentry is standing and shouting, his voice echoing loudly amidst the woods.

He gathers his magic within himself, staring out at where he expects the first of the orcs to come crashing through. Roy attempts the same, but his attempts are far less successful, and he is clearly visible when the orcs come crashing into the clearing.

They are spread out, a thin line of five crashing through the woods, hunting for the party. As they spot the party, they turn and begin to converge on Roy and the other visible party members. Suddenly, one stops dead, its brain frozen to a halt by the magic of Shaedof.

Repost of Round #1

The first two orcs stop charge, staring at their frozen comrade. Roaring, each one pulls a javelin from a case across their shoulders, heaving the weapons at Shaedof. The weapons falls short, burying themselves in the ground.

Roy charges at a foe, slicing his club across the legs. The orc catches it easily on his weapon, swinging and slashing with a shortsword in response. The blow is poorly timed, and Roy is easily able to sidestep the attack. Another orc circles around him, swinging a heavy club at Roy's back, but the weapon thuds harmlessly into the armour and falls away.

Guthfrith mumbles and whines to himself for a moment before finally acting, sending a splatter of the blood from his arms past the nearest Orc, once more missing completely.

Round #2

Shaedof scurries away, lashing out with his will as he does so. He catches one Orc in the bloody net of his mind, but another manages to slip away, resisting the invasive attack of the ritualist.

One of the orcs who had thrown his javelin at Shaedof chases after him, churning through the terrain to swing at the retreating kobold. His attack cracks the air behind the kobold, missing. The second follows closely, his attack gashing the ground behind Shaedof.

Roy swings at one of the two orcs circling him, his attack parried. After a momentary struggle, the orc is able to throw off Roy's weapon, although his counter strike fails. However, taking advantage of the momentary lapse in Roy's defenses, the second orc crashes his orc into the back of the human, striking it painfully.

Shaedof scurries away, lashing out with his will as he does so. He catches one Orc in the bloody net of his mind, but another manages to slip away, resisting the invasive attack of the ritualist. He mutters at the orc, whose mind is far stronger than it should be against his attacks.

Two orcs strike at Shaedof, but the attacks are uncoordinated and easily avoided.

Vargon lashes out with a bolt of elemental energy, catching one orc in a spray of elemental energies. The orc growls and stares at him, promising coming death.

Roy swings at one of the two orcs circling, crashing the weapon into the ribs and cutting through the thin armour. Blood trickles up the blade towards Roy, who stands taller and stronger as he turns to face the second orc. That orc crashes his shortsword down into the shoulder of the historian, driving the weapon deep and wounding his opponent grievously. Grinning, the orc likes the blood from the blade as Roy staggers before him.

Round #4

Shaedof holds his ground, staring down the two orcs chasing after him, forcing his will into their mind.

Two orcs strike at Shaedof, but the attacks are uncoordinated and easily avoided. They are growling and angry, unable to believe the kobold keeps avoiding their strikes.

Vargon rushes over to heal Roy, dodging a strike from the standing orc to feed him a potion.

The orc standing over Roy turns and marches towards Vargon, cutting at him with his sword. Over eager and reckless from his strike against the downed human, he swings with all his might, cutting only the air near Vargon.

Round #5

Shaedof turns on the orcs chasing him, bearing his teeth and his claws and jumping at them, slashing to one side and then the other. His first strike goes awry, scraping his claws against the armour of his foe, but his second is a clean strike, claws raking across the face of an orc, gouging deep enough to penetrate the skull. The orc flails and howls, falling backwards to clutch at its face, before shuddering and falling still. The second orc, already bearing the deep wound of Vargon's elemental strike, fails to dodge the following bite from Shaedof, and cries out as the kobold latches its jaws into the artery in the thigh. Blood sprays across the kobold as his foe collapses, bleeding to death on the ground.

As Shaedof releases his hold upon the mind of the orc, it shakes from its stupor, glaring at Guthfrith who stands before it, razor raised. Grasping its weapon in two hands, the orc swings a giant, clumsy blow at the head of Guthfrith. The blow flies wide, the orc unable to control the weapon so soon after shaking off his bodily paralysis.

A new entrant charges onto the field of battle, a wizened and evil looking creature who turns to face the orc near Vargon, his face momentarily glowing. The orc tries to glance away, but is captivated by the look and shudders, fear rolling across his face.

Vargon compounds the deadly assault, launching a bolt of crackling energy that sears the orc badly, leaving a weeping sore along the shoulder and arm of the orc. The orc roars, charging at Vargon, sword held high above his head. Vargon is unable to dodge the assault, and the orc crashes into him, cutting him badly across the ribs and arms, his thin armour protecting him little from the enraged creature.

Guthfrith shouts as the orc before him wakes from his stupor, and is saved from a deadly blow only by the remnants of the paralysis. Quickly, he gashes again at the throat of the orc with his razor, catching him a glancing blow across the shoulder, wounding the creature but not slaying it.

Round #5

Shaedof seems to have entered a bloody rage and his sole purpose is to tear apart the last orcs remaining. He charge at the nearest orc and stabs it with his claw. Blood squirts in all directions as Shaedof manages to cut a major artery with a perfect claw strike. Only when the orc stops moving does Shaedof stop cutting and biting it, before returning to a somewhat normal state. Knackered he sits down and takes a rest to realize what just happened.

Roy, staggering to his feet, grasps his weapon in both hands and sets off on a lumbering charge, striking at the orc engaged with Vargon, the same orc who nearly kill him. Revenge upon his mind, he brings the club down in a stumbling, swinging arc that still connects solidly with the back of the orc's head. A wet crunching sound results, and the orc slumps to the ground, dead and broken.

The group of five looks around, the original four glancing up and down at the newcomer, this wizened and dangerous looking humanoid that ran from their path through the forest to assist. Still unsure, they gather together to confer on what is to be done. Overall, the party is in ragged shape, with many of the members clutching deep, bleeding wounds and tattered garments.

Fear? Ohhh yess. Lets bring fear indeed. They should know fear. We are do-gooders after all. Fear is what we do, aye? Looking maliciously at the closest orc, Loke bends over it and presses his hand on the face of the orc for a few seconds. Anyone in the vicinity feels a putrid smell of rotten flesh from the fresh corpse... After placing a copper piece on both its eyes, he moves over to the next one and repeats the process. OOOhhh. Good one. That`ll scare them, aye? We are good guys, after all. We scare them. Aint no fun scaring them if there dead... Someone help me here. Stand them up, aye? With the help of the party, Loke places the orcs erect against a couple of trees and rams there javelins through there shoulders, nailing them in place. As Loke  starts walking towards the town, anyone inspecting the corpses will notice that they both have a handshaped mark of gangrene over there faces. Also, the corpses seem very fresh. Shaedof at the Camp
Shaedof slides towards the apparently deserted orc camp, blending in easily with the surrounding foliage, but scuffing his clawed feet slightly on the brush scattered across the ground. Once he is within easy spotting distance of the camp, he tucks under a bush, glancing around to make sure there are no enemies near by, then proceeds to watch the camp, staring for signs of movement. His position is somewhat poorly chosen, though, and he can not see more than half the camp. What he can see appears empty.

Rest of the party
While Shaedof disappears into the woods, several of the others, the newcomer included, begin to rearrange the bodies of the orc, hiding some of the bloodstains and altering their placement and limbs, attempting to make it look as if a monster or some great beast attacked the orcs. Loke begins to work his magic, both literally and figuratively, as his spells restore some of the visual health of the orcs, before his hands burn their marks into the faces and bodies of the deceased foes, leaving them disfigured and strangely altered. It should be enough to confuse all but the brightest of searchers.

Alteration of the battlefield done, they follow Roy and the others back to town, looking to recover from their wounds and expenditures of the day. Only Shaedof remains out, scouting about the land.

Shaedof slithers forward through the brush, slipping into the camp from one edge. He scans the surroundings, looking for any scent of movement, but sees little more than a few tents and a firepit placed in the middle of the camp. Satisfied that he is safe, he begins to search through the remains of the camp, finding little more than food and other basic supplies. It was orcish food at that, raw chunks of meat and old bread, little that would prove appetizing to a normal diet. A few javelins lay scattered about, but there was nothing much of note in this camp. It was what it looked like: the home to a small party of orcs.

: Stratovarius November 13, 2008, 12:21:31 PM
Back together in town, the five men regroup, looking about the village, meeting the eyes of the staring townsfolk who stare at the bloodied and battered members of the party. Roy, Vargon and Guthfrith, especially, are covered in blood, bandages once white stained a deep crimson, and trails of the substance running down their arms and torsos. The gentler among the villagers turn their eyes away, not wanting to look at the gore and the filth, but others come forward, some with buckets and cloth, and begin dabbing away the stained blood around the wounds. The three most wounded are bundled off quickly into the inn, where it is quickly apparent they will spend the night eating well and in bed, mothered over by worried townsfolk.

Shaedof and Loke are left to explore the town, and a small walk finds a fletcher, blacksmith, farrier, cooper, and wainwright, as well as a brewery attached to the back of the village hall. The rest of the structures are taken up by a few small houses and storage rooms, while around the hall is a scattered square full of disused market stalls. A quick question allows that the market is usually open one day per week.

: Stratovarius November 19, 2008, 01:29:00 PM
With the best wishes, and a few longing glances, from the townspeople, the heroes set their path back towards the woods. There are a few harsh glances in the direction of Guthfrith and Loke, however, for Guthfrith had become quite a pest to the healers of the village, always moaning and whining about the unfairness of life and the pain and suffering that he was forced to undergo. Even pointing out that much of it was self-inflicted did little to quiet the constant complaints and mutterings from the grumbling martyr.

Loke, on the other hand, had come across as a strange and unusual old creature, switching rapidly from one statement to another, and never quite settled in what he was saying. There were even rumours that he had threatened one old farmer, but so far those were being discounted.

Roy had woken from a feverish, violent dream that morning, imagining himself in the role of a great hero from a long ago battle, one that he could only dimly recall in his waking moments. A wave of soldiers had charged down upon him and his men, only to be broken upon the blades of their axes, a firm line holding fast in the swirling maelstrom of battle.

Vargon awakes that morning, his body and mind focusing inward upon the core of magical energy that resides within each living creature, calling and coaxing it to rise and suffuse his being, filling his flesh with its energy and power. Flames and ice flickers from his fingertips, and he strides out to meet the new day.

Shaedof's reptilian form slithers from the bed, once more the older and weaker form than that emboldened by the strength of the Orc. Grasping his pouch of ritualistic tools, he pats his crossbow and joins his comrades, nostrils already flaring at the thought of fresh orc blood running through his hands.

Together, they follow the broken and beaten track into the woods, the marks of their battles two days ago not swept aside yet by the dew and the rain. Their footsteps sink into the wet ground, thudding quietly as they made their way towards the campsite of the orcs, the last known place that they had found their foes. Perhaps only halfway there, some began to gather ominous feelings.

Combat Round #3

The orcs, overwhelmed by the spells and swords of the adventurers, quickly fail and fall upon the death of their leader. Roy's club catches one, felling the orc with a single crushing blow, breaking ribs and crunching armour with brutal strength. Vargon's magic lances from his hand, a bolt of blinding light piercing the eyes of a feral orc, burning the mind from within. That foe falls to the ground a burnt hulk, a body but little more. Loke lets loose his fear, supping upon the mortal soul of his enemy, draining and drawing their energy into his own. Straighter and taller, he appears a younger man than before. Guthfrith cuts at the orc before him, gashing it deeply across the head with a razor before a hand from Shaedof stops him. The little kobold begins his strange incantations around the last surviving orc, marking the ground and his frozen foe with inks and unguents of potent scent. Finally, he steps forward, one claw ripping the throat from the paralysed enemy. Feasting upon the soul of his foe, the kobold grows in stature, his old and frail limbs becoming younger, bulking as muscles swell upon them.

: Stratovarius December 08, 2008, 12:01:12 PM
The party searches amongst the bodies of the dead orcs, paying particular attention to that of the great ugly creature who had lead this patrol. The axe that he wielded has strange markings up the haft, written in a form of stylized orcish, while his armour is covered in much the same, a series of heavy leather wraps bound about with thin strips of metal covering the gaps. Strapped to his belt is a single small potion vial, the contents unmarked and foul.

From the rest of the orcs can be found their weapons and battered armour, but little else in the way of valuables. Some coins have spilled from their pockets, lying mingled in their blood.
: Re: Lledrithiedig Choedwig
: TheWordSlinger December 08, 2008, 01:07:55 PM
Roy takes the leader orc's armor and places it in his backpack, then straps the axe to his back. We can worry about possession of these later, perhaps one of you possesses the ability to identify items of a magical nature? Roy looks deeper into the woods, in the direction the orcs came from. In the meantime, let us find some more orcs to slay.

: Re: Lledrithiedig Choedwig
: Stratovarius December 10, 2008, 12:15:38 PM
Vargon leads them off through the woods, seeing spoor on the ground, a broken twig, a shattered bough, following each sign towards the main camp of the orcs. It is perhaps six hours later when they arrive, atop a cliff that peers down towards a dell by a river. Spread out across the rivershore is a mass of tents and wooden shelters, and here and there an orc wanders between, sharpening an axe, cooking, eating, fighting. It is a dark place, hidden from much of the sun by the walls of the canyon, with little in the way of access from the cliff height. Only a single narrow path cuts down the canyon face, and it would be well lit and easily visible for those below.

Roy looks down at the camp, attempting to estimate the numbers of combatants and non combatants.
I think we would be well served to withdraw to the woods for the remainder of the day. We can rest for a bit, then strike at the orcs in the night. Roy looks closer at the various wooden structures, Vargon, can you prepare that fire-trick you performed on out first trip? I think it may be quite useful...

Most of those who wander about the campfires are of warrior build and stature, armed with a motley array of swords, axes, clubs, javelins, and wrapped in the thick and studded leather armour of their kind. Scattered amongst the warriors are a few women, but no children. The women tend to the camp, keeping some small semblance of order. There are perhaps twenty-five people in the camp, although not all are visible at any one time, and of those, eighteen appear to be warriors.

"Guys, let's retreat and make a battleplan for tonight!"

While in safe distance from the camp and all members are together Shaedof starts talking:
"I think I could sneak towards the guards in the cover of darkness and use my special gift to stun 2 orcs. I wonder whether there will be more, considering the size of the party. You guys sneak up behind me and silently kill all the orcs while they are still sleeping!". Shaedof says all of this as if he were a real army commander, ending his story with "Any questions?"

: TheWordSlinger December 11, 2008, 01:08:28 PM
Roy thinks for a moment.
When one is faced with a force larger than one's own, a common tactic for success is to divide and conquer. Do any of you know magic of the Illusion school? If not, I can teach Vargon a new trick to go with his fire trick...If we can create a distraction and draw some of the orcs away, then steal into the camp and slay those left behind, then we would be able to fight two easier fights instead of one difficult one...
: Re: Lledrithiedig Choedwig
: Straw_Man December 12, 2008, 07:57:46 PM

"I can manage both fire and illusion, but that is my limit,  though ..." thinks for awhile, "No matter, we shall see.

I am concerned though ... that the orcs have brought their females. I saw no children but I do not wish to kill non-combatants. I wish to ask of this group what we should. I am no paladin but the oaths I swore forbid me to kill indiscriminately."

Loke hasnt been paying attention to the battleplanning at all, instead playing (That is, scaring like no tomorrow) a squirrel he snapped up on the way back from the orc encampment. At Vargon`s mention of child slaughter, however, he snaps into the conversation with a unnatural glow in his eyes. Ohh. Killing children. Ofcourse the *cough*GAY*cough* half-demon wants to harm the little babies. Myself, being a pure, celestial do-gooder, is  against  such an act on a matter of principle, or whatever works for you. Therefore, Loke definitely thinks he should be in charge of the babie-skinnin... errr I mean exterminat*ahem* down putting. Yes. Thats the word. Down-putting. Wouldnt want vile-boy over there getting any bad habits... All agree? Excellent. You sneak into the camp  and bring the  babies to me, and I`ll take care of the rest. Off you go now... Loke will start collecting rocks and brances, putting together what anyone knowledgeable in religion will recognize  as a makeshift altar, after his little speech.
: Re: Lledrithiedig Choedwig
: TheWordSlinger December 13, 2008, 03:55:54 PM
Roy replies first to Vargon, If the females do not act violently toward us, then we should not attack them. But many generals of the past have made the mistake of assuming Orc females were harmless non-combatants. Watch them as warily as you would a viper. He then turns to Loke, I still have no reason to trust you, celestial blood or no. If you continue to act in such a blood thirsty manner, I will have to do something about it. Roy is feeling the hilt of one of his throwing knives sheathed inside his shield. And if you don't want to at least pay attention to our preparations, I think it would be best if you returned to the village. You'd just be a liability to the rest of us here.

Ofcourse I`m paying attention. Whats with you  and all these mean things you keep saying about me? Oh. Sorry. I forgot. Demonblood. My bad. Who` s the bloodthirsty one here? Huh? I just said I was against killing babies... I  dont see how you can threaten a poor old man such as myself with a clean conscience.  And I wouldnt DREAM of leaving these poor folks alone at your mercy. Loke is very tired of Vargon constantly giving him a hard time for no good reason.

Turning his attention to the group, "I do not speak orc myself, but once I start the distraction, we can pick out their leaders. If Loke and Shaedof are well enough hidden, perhaps in the tree boughs, they can freeze the strongest orcs. It seemed to work well in our last battle. Agreed gentlemen?" His last word is redolent of hidden humour.

The party beds down for the night, sliding back into the woods away from the orc camp, away from the sentries who move out onto the rim with the dark, away from the growling and howling that accompanies dinner that night in the midst of the foul creatures. It is a celebration night for their dark gods, and the noise echoes out from the canyon into the night sky above. Reaching through the forest, it causes those heroes to toss and turn, a night of ill foreboding and strange thoughts. They wake disquieted and ill at ease.

Much discussion ensued over the coming day, and many things were said that could not be unsaid, and some drifted away, their hearts wounded and darkened by the evil before them. Others came to restore that balance, drawn by the news of distress that flowed outwards from that poor village. Gathering together their strength, they tracked the heroes out into the woods, and proposed to them assistance for their assault upon the camp of the vile orcs.

Meeting together the two parties combined their efforts and their planning, and the challenge that this assault presented seemed to diminish beneath the strength of this group of heroes. Turning their minds towards the darkening sky, they prepared themselves to strike fear into the heart of the orcs, their weapons to taste the blood of the foe.

  "Go."

The bear charges forward, grabbing onto an Orc matron and pulling it towards the river. The orcs roar and charge after it, stabbing at the bear with spears and swords. The howls bring more and more from their tent, and soon they are surrounding the bear, jabbing it fiercely with their weapons.

Surprised by how successful his ploy worked Vargon does not react well. In an urgent whisper "Hold, Roy, wait till they get further from the camp.", and hopes to death that they could separate enough of the warriors that they'd have an advantage in this coming battle.

After waiting for a moment, Roy gets impatient and charges the nearest orc. Screaming the whole way. He throws a dagger as he runs and then draws his club for a wicked smash. He's wielding his club one handed.
