Templates/Monsterous Races for a few characters
« on: November 05, 2010, 11:47:17 AM »
I'm not an expert on templates or monsterous races, so I'm gonna ask for some help with a few. I need them for:
- Rogue skillmonkey
- Evil cleric
- Warblade or Paladin of Tyranny
- Barbarian

Dark Creature looks nice for the rogue, but I'm sure there's better options. I'm going through the tier system for templates right now. Trying to limit each to a cumulative total of +3 LA.

I'm just going from memory, but feral might be good for the barbarian(+1 la) as might mineral warrior(+2?) or half minotaur(+1) or some combination of the three, half-fey might be another option for the rouge(+2) maybe Anthropomorphic Bat for the cleric, I can't think of anything for the warblade/paladin though

http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=8884 might help you too

I see that you want to solve problems. Not problems like, "What is beauty?," because that would fall within the purview of your conundrums of 'philosophy'. You want to solve practical problems. F'r instance, how are you gonna stop some big, mean Mother Hubbard from tearing you a structurally superfluous new behind? The answer: Use a gun. And if that don't work? Use more gun.
And if that fails try this

There are lots. I really like the Marrulurk from Sandstorm, but the loss of 1st level skill points will hurt if you're looking purely for a skillmonkey role.
Quote
- Evil cleric
Necropolitan Evolved Undead? What role is this cleric going to play mostly? Gravetouched Ghoul (Libris Mortis) is also pretty good.
Quote
- Warblade or Paladin of Tyranny
- Barbarian
Mineral Warrior and Feral are good for almost any beatstick. Draconic might be worth looking at, also. Protocreature from the Bestiary of Krynn is also a good template for barbarian types if you don't mind dumping your mental stats.

A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.
...thanks

Cleric will share healing battlefield control and healing duties with the sorcerer (I'm going to let him fluff up a deity for Healing domain Divine Sorcery). I expect in the long run he'll probably have a small horde of undead at his beckoning as well.

Lycanthropy for the Barbarian?

I'm pretty sure there 's a good, High Str low HD animal out there.
Fighter: "I can kill a guy in one turn."
Cleric: "I can kill a guy in half a turn."
Wizard: "I can kill a guy before my turn."
Bard: "I can get three idiots to kill guys for me."

On a strange note, would anyone be put out if we had a post about people or events we can spare a thought for, or if its within their creed, a prayer for? Just a random thought, but ... hells I wouldn't have known about either Archangels daughter or Saeomons niece if I didn't happen to be on these threads.
Sounds fine to me.
probably over on "Off-topic".
might want to put a little disclaimer in the first post.

This is the Min/Max board. We should be able to figure out a way to optimize the POWER OF PRAYER(TM) that doesn't involve "Pazuzu, Pazuzu, Pazuzu".

My final project for my film independent study course. It could do with a watching and critiquing

See Lycanthropy Handbook.

Also, I have a modified lycanthrope template that's a little easier to swallow: http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=9175
My work
The tier system in a nutshell:
Tier 6: A cartographer.
Tier 5: An expert cartographer or a decent marksman.
Tier 4: An expert marksman.
Tier 3: An expert marksman, cartographer and chef who can tie strong knots and is trained in hostage negotiation or a marksman so good he can shoot down every bullet fired by a minigun while armed with a rusted single-shot pistol that veers to the left.
Tier 2: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything, or the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
Tier 1: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything and the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
Is it a "face" Rogue by chance?  I'm a fan of Phrenic Whispergnome with the Magic-in-the-Blood feat if it is.

Otherwise, I'd favor the Poisondusk Lizardfolk.

Do the Half Ogre and Half Minotaur templates add strength just for size? I know they both get the +4 strength as listed. Do they not also get more strength for going up a size category? Or am I just making shit up?  :bigeye

Kindof new to all this template stuff.

Yes, if they increase your size, you get even more stat increase. For medium to large, Half-Mino goes from +4 strength to +12.

That's what I thought. Heh, the look on my players' faces when I tell them their beatsticks can have 30 strength out of the box is going to be hilarious. I think I'm going to have to go to Campaign: Hard Mode on this one.

Unseelie fey on the paladin of tyranny?

The template the rogue should take is so glaringly obvious as to not be worth mentioning.

If it hasn't been mentioned yet, you should. You've got me all curious now.

Are you certain?  The rules say:

The only reference I can find to changing ability scores due to size changes is in the section on increasing hit dice.

Normally, yes, an increase in HD is how a creature grows in size, but Half-Minotaur can also do it.

Quote from: Dragon #313 p94
Size and Type: The base creature's type does not change. If the base creature is of Small or Medium size, it gains one size category, becoming Medium or Large respectively. See Table 4-2: Changes to Statistics by Size in the Monster Manual for changes to the base creature when it gains a size category. The changes in this template are in addition to the changes outlined there.

The underlined portions are the reason for an additional +8 Strength. (if you're going from Medium to Large, that is)

Thanks, I don't have that issue.
