Asian Film fans

Hopefully Meg doesn't mind me asking this.

I don't know if any of you have heard of the book the Videohound's Golden Movie Retriever Guide.  It also has a website:  http://www.movieretriever.com/

They do film reviews, hopefully with a mildly amusing tilt.  I have been asked to expand the asian films section  :D (specifically scifi, horror, fantasy, etc).

So if there's an asian film you think deserves attention (and its available for sale in the US) let me know and it shall be added.

The best Chinese (Hong Kong, really) films are the serials they did in the 80s. Problem is, I don't know their names in English other than "The Bund", which was a gangster serial set in the 1960s, IIRC (tommy guns FTW!). There were quite a number of martial arts/ancient china serials a la Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon that absolutely blew CTHD away.

Well, I watched the Japanese movie, Yogen (which was translated into english as Premonition) and thought it was pretty good.

But one that I really REALLY liked was a Korean movie called Geoul Sokeuro (Into the Mirror). It seriously was awesome. Go watch it!

Plus, there are always anime movies that I could mention...

People usually think that I've lost my mind. I haven't lost it, I know exactly where it is: the gutter.

My body is a temple. That is why I make chocolate sacrifices in it every day.

"3-Iron", "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring"

"Violent cop", "Brother", "Hana-Bi", "Kikujiro"... Anything from Takeshi Kitano :)

"Wild Zero" for sheer awesomness :lol

Classics as Battle Royale I & II,  the Zatoichi movies, Akira Kurosawa, etc...

I think the only one on that list that I've seen is Ichi the Killer. Holy crap that was violent.

Well... I've seen some Kurosawa films, and Zatoichi, but they aren't on the OP's list. Kurosawa's "Dreams" I think would qualify as fantasy. I've seen quite a few Chinese movies (my wife is Chinese), but none of them were Sci-fi/horror/fantasy, really.

A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.

They don't have to be scifi/horor/fantays, thats just sort of the thing we're going for right now cause it's popular.  I'm allowed to add other stuff  :D

Cherries is a great movie. It is about a mentally challenged woman who adopts a baby she finds that's been abandoned.

http://www.dianying.com/en/title/21308

If I can remember more, I'll post them.

Assembly was also very good. http://www.dianying.com/en/title/jjh2006

It is a war movie about a soldier who is the only one to survive from his unit in the Chinese civil war.

I don't know if these are easily available in the US, though, heh.

My suggestion apeared at Fantasia last year: The Rug Cop. It's an absurd comedy, but I liked it.

Doesn't appear to be available yet.  It looks good though.

As far as Japanese movies go, you can't go wrong with Kurosawa for great period-piece samurai movies.  J-horror also tends to be pretty good.

For Chinese movies, I'm a big fan of two (slightly) related genres: Kung Fu movies (Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, etc...) as well as Chinese Kung Fu Horror (Bride with White Hair, Chinese Ghost Story 1-3, etc...)
PbP Games
The Artifact (prologue) as Dr. Henry Loder, Mayan archaeologist

We just watched Painted Skin, which I think would probably fall into this category. It was pretty good. I'm pretty sure it isn't available (legally...  :smirk) in the US yet, though.

Along with Hard Boiled I'd suggest John Woo's the Killer, as well as A Better Tomorrow, Better Tomorrow II and Bullet in the Head.

From Korea, I would suggest Musa the Warrior, Nowhere to Hide, and Painted Fire. I would suggest Supyonje, but it is one heavy, depressing movie. If you can get it, check it out, but be warned.

We have someone who has been doing Jackie Chan films, and I'm pretty sure we have all of Kurosawa's and Woo's work (but I'll double check to make sure). Painted Skin isn't available as an official release yet but I'm pretty sure Asian Cult Cinema has it.

And if anyone has suggestions on Indian/Pakistani/Filipino/Indonesian/Malaysian films I guess I get to add them too if there's an official release.
