13th lvl Character critique
« on: July 04, 2008, 11:30:50 PM »
Hey guys. I've got a 13th level campaign coming up, and I was wondering what you thought of my character idea. Let me start off with who else is in the party

Other party members:
  • Dragonborn Fire Elf Focused Specialist Transmuter5/Master Specialist3/Fatespinner4/Mindbender1
  • Human Cleric/Ordained Champion/Bone Knight
  • Lastly, some sort of fighter type, new to the game, nothing complicated.

I've helped the other members optimize their character, as they don't always know what's good for them. On JJ's scale, they're between 1 and 2. The wizard still thinks fireball is a good spell, even with my long explanations.  :-\

So I've decided to fill the skillmonkey role of the group, and generally support the group in anything I can. So here's what I've got so far.

Human Factotum3/Swashbuckler3/Invisible Blade5/Swordsage2
Factotum 1            Human: Able Learner 1st: Two Weapon Fighting
Factotum 2
Factotum 3            3rd: Font of Inspiration
Swashbuckler 1       Swb: Weapon Finesse
Swashbuckler 2
Swordsage 1           SS:Weapon Focus(Kukri) 6th:Adaptive Style
Invisible Blade 1
Invisible Blade 2
Invisible Blade 3       9th:Kung Fu Genius
Invisible Blade 4
Invisible Blade 5
Swashbuckler 3        12th: Improved Two Weapon Fighting
Swordsage 2
Here's where I plan to go
Factotum 4
Factotum 5             15th: GTWF or Font of Inspiration
Factotum 6
Factotum 7
Factotum 8             18th: Font of Inspiration
Bloodclaw Master 1
Bloodclaw Master 2

My DM is letting me take Kung Fu Genius for the Swordsage's Wisdom AC bonus. I'm pretty sure all of the other feats are in good order too.

So my main question is, is this build any good? It has +5d6 SA with Assassin's Stance, all that Factotum-y goodness with Cunning Surge, Int+5 to AC, Plenty of skill points to fill the skillmonkey role, and some inspiration points(not as many as I'd like, but hey).

I apologize if this build is garbage, I'm pretty woozy from this new medicine my doctor gave me , and not exactly at the top of my game. Took a lot of editing to get my typing right. :drunk Anyways, any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You have swashbuckler without daring outlaw... I'm gunna go out on a limb and say that the daring swordsage is probably more of a fit for what you are trying to do.  Either that or Ted the Enabler.

I had been pondering earlier if this could fit in Daring Outlaw, but I hadn't been sure if it was worth switching out Factotum and Invisible Blade, the Int synergy there is great. However, the Daring Swordsage that I just looked up on the COWiki is making a convincing argument towards me, certainly something to consider. He gets

I had never seen Ted the Enabler before, as I was a latecomer to the 339, and never got to witness a lot of things that were done. I've read a good deal now, but I seemed to have skimmed over Ted. But now looking at him, he's a very tempting product; I might just have to go out and buy Ted the Enabler NPC (tm).

I seem to have forgotten mentions in my above post that my group abhors the point buy system, unfortunately for me. These are currently my stats.

Str 8
Dex 18
Con 16
Int 18 + 3 levels
Wis 8
Cha 13

And sadly, to make things more difficult, Multi-class penalties are enforced...which I just now noticed make my build not so viable. Damn f@%!*$ cough medicine...makin' me switch stuff around...

The daring swordsage will work off a human base if you tweak it a little:
Rogue 3/ Lion Totem (CC) Barbarian 2 (Whirling Frenzy, UA)/ Swordsage 2/ Swashbuckler X

Ted is just Factotum 11/ Chameleon 9, so would work just fine(heavy use of FoI).  Your wisdom kills some of the fun though.

Man, the more I look at Ted, the more amazing he becomes. Ubernoob, +fu to you for opening my eyes. Your the first one who's fu I've ever changed, congratulations! I also just noticed this.

Level 6:

Mental PinnacleSRD/XPH () - Become a powerful Psion for the encounter! Cast this spell once and you'll last the encounter. Ask your DM whether you get bonus PP for a high INT score - I'd rule that yes. An Enchanter casting this spell can manifest powers with a truly scary DC.

This seems like it could certainly open up many more options for mighty Ted. I think I might start a CO Diary when I play this out because it seems like so much fun.

Cool.  My obsessive semi-lurking at 339 helped someone.

Swordsages get their AC bonus at 2nd level. Don't you need to have the AC bonus before taking Kung Fu Genius?

According to crystalkeep, "Must be taken before or at the same time as gaining Monk level 1st." So actually yeah, I'd just have to switch it with my first Font of Inspiration. But sadly, that build isn't going to be played, ubernoob showed me the light of Ted, and is now in the process of being made. Good catch though.  :D
