Which classes can you easily 'play as you go along?'

I use turn Undead.

Binders, the 3 Martial Adepts, 3 Meldshapers & 2 Invocation Users are low maintance.
Any of these can profit from additional source material(namely: Dragon Magic), carefully chosen feats(Entangling Breath from RotD is pretty much required for Dragonfire Adepts) and Equipment(luckily most Items got reprinted in MIC).

Dragon Shamans and the other 2 classes from Tome of Magic simply are not good enough at what they do to be considered without serious optimization.
Same here for the Marshal, Sorc(with PHB I only kinda meh) and classlist casters(Beguiler, Dread Necro, Warmage): These shine when combined with enough sourcebooks to reach the ceiling.

Skillusers like Rogue & Factotum do well enough, but if Artificer was too much for the player he won't get the best out of these two either.

Totally agree with dragon shaman not being nearly good enough to consider without extensive optimization, btw.

I thought it was more halflings that used the skiprocks.  Aren't trolls better off going hulking hurler and pitching boulders, wagons, cows or small planets?

i built a fighter generic warrior for a 8 year old who joined our group. used REALLY big sword and all his feats were passive. all he ever had to say was i hit it with my sword and add up his damage.
