Maneuver based melee classes
« on: October 12, 2010, 12:43:03 PM »
I love the way Maneuvers work, in principal, and would like to apply this globally. I'm wondering, has anyone created rules for the non-maneuver based classes (such as Fighter, barbarian, monk, etc) to have a maneuver progression? And, if anyone has looked into this, could you advise me if this is a good idea or not?

If you go back several pages in the House Rules forum, you might find some from bkdubs.  He did a lot of ToB-based stuff about a year ago or so.

There have been a few modified classes which add maneuvers (most notably the ranger and marshal).

If you want to use it "globally" though, I'd base maneuver progression on BAB.
My work
The tier system in a nutshell:
Tier 6: A cartographer.
Tier 5: An expert cartographer or a decent marksman.
Tier 4: An expert marksman.
Tier 3: An expert marksman, cartographer and chef who can tie strong knots and is trained in hostage negotiation or a marksman so good he can shoot down every bullet fired by a minigun while armed with a rusted single-shot pistol that veers to the left.
Tier 2: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything, or the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
Tier 1: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything and the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
As to whether or not it's a good idea: it's mixed.  ToB gives good options to melee characters and is lots of fun, but it's full of stupid trap options just like any other WotC book.  Still, it's not that hard to find a handful of disciplines to give to different classes.  It's a matter of figuring out how to balance them with the class features that's the trick.

Barbarian - Iron Heart?, Stone Dragon, Tiger Claw
Fighter - use a Warblade
Monk - use an unarmed Swordsage
Paladin - use a Crusader
Ranger - use RadicalTaoist's sublime way ranger.  I made a Raging Storm discipline for ranged maneuvers.
Rogue - Setting Sun?, Shadow Hand, Tiger Claw?

Nice link. By the way, I'm very much open to homebrew maneuvers if anyone has them (I will definitely check out the homebrew forum as well).

I would assume that anything that comes out of WotC can be either exploitable to the point of ridiculousness or useless.

Bum dum da dum:

Specifically this: http://www.enworld.org/forum/d-d-legacy-house-rules/187901-tob-bo9s-niffts-compendium.html

Niffft did several interesting disciplines, a few homebrew/modified classes and some racial subs.

Any of the disciplines done by TheDementedOne are worth a look.

Boz is quite right about that. TheDementedOne's disciplines are top notch homebrew offerings. You can find them HERE (at the bottom).
