Help needed
« on: September 17, 2010, 06:21:04 AM »
Playing the giant series, Frost Giant section, having trouble. Party make up is 2 warriors - one a monkey gripping dps (9th level, low AC, high damage, he gets beaten like rented mule) the other a straight tank (9th level, sword and board, low damage, high AC, high hp - no goad, no combat reflexes, no stand still), 1 rog/swashbuckler - deadly defense guy (10th level, high AC - for a rogue, low hp, average damage, no hide in plain sight, another heal sponge), 1 Wu-Jen/Master of the Unseen Hand (Real narrow specific build - I think he's trying an X-man Magneto or Jean Grey build-thing. He disarms the giants maybe half the time, tries to grapple them occasionally, and hasn't succeeded yet), and me.

Problem - with the party make up we've been averaging two or three combats before we've burned out the healer (Me) and have had to retreat. I have been allowed to bring either my 10th level cleric/boneknight (6 cleric/4 boneknight) - and his cohort or my Wizard/Conjurer specialist (Enchantment/Necro Banned schools)  - and his cohort. Both characters have improved cohort from Heroes of Battle.

I would like help creating a 9th level cohort that will give our mish-mash melee heavy group more loiter time in the dungeon. No psionics, no flaws, no Mind Sight, no venerables, no templates, no ToM, no MiC. WotC 3.5 only, Complete books in, Sandstorm in, Storm Wrack in, Frostburn in, Tome of Battle in, FR in. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you want another healer? another dmg sponge?

idk so il take a shot in the dark.
bring in a druid 9. greenbound summoning to help take dmg and tie up monsters. be sure and have your healing summons handy, such as a unicorn.
also prep mostly heal spells.
not to mention the animal companion for more pwnage

hope this helps

Dont spend your spell slots healing. Demand that everybody bring their own lesser vigor/clw wands.

You could try to get the Touch of Healing reserve feat from Complete Champion in somewhere.

Do you want a simple build suggestion, or is complicated ok?

Complicated is fine. Any help is greatly appreciated. The druid idea sounds good. Can I possibly beg a build? Anyway I've tried to slice it so far, the two guys get rocked, sometimes all three (the two fighters and the rogue). By heal sponge I mean the two guys - the monkey gripping warrior and the rogue - soak up most of the heals and way too quickly. In combat, the frost giants have been hitting way too hard for clw or lesser vigor wands to keep up. The last brilliant idea they come up with was extended buffs on the monkey gripping fighter, tried it, even with extended spiderskin (from the Wu Jen guy), and shield of faith, best we could manage was getting him to an AC of 28. It held okay for 2 fights- basically random thug encounters - and broke down during the major combat - 6 frost giants, a young adult white dragon plus a huge white dragon - didn't discover the age catagory. The monkey gripping warrior got grappled, they played county lockdown with him, the rogue got smashed and we ended up bugging out - again. I guess I'm looking for a way to either mitigate the damage (like the druid idea) or get more efficient heals. Once again thank you for the help.

Hrm.  My archenemy.  We meet again...

Try a tripping Fighter.  Keeps the enemy locked down in a large area.

When it comes to cohorts I believe there is always one strong option that stands above the rest.

Artificer.

It'll contribute in enhancing every single member of the party without overshadowing them, unless you want to do that as well.

If you want to go the buffing route, War Weaver makes a great cohort for a melee-heavy party.

Transmuter 5/War Weaver 4 could drop Polymorph and Enlarge on everyone, and do a Dimension Step/Snake's Swiftness combo so you start taking out the enemies before they can do so much damage.

try this:

Silverbrow Human
Crusader 2/ Savage Bard(Healing Hymn variant) 7

Feats:
Dragonfire Inspiration(Human Bonus)
1st lvl Draconic Aura(Vigor)
3rd lvl Snowflake Wardance
6th lvl Knowledge Devotion
9th lvl Doomspeak

Buff self and Allies ... De-buff Enemies, Heal everyone(Fast Healing 2 when they are under 1/2 total hp), Heal in Combat Devoted Spirit Manuvers, good Combat Abilities, Summon Natures Ally spells(will get SNA IV for Unicorn when can cast 4th lvl Spells), healing Spells are More Effective

Well, if FR is in, make your level 10 Conjurer either a Transmuter/Incantatrix, or just make sure he's an Incantatrix.  War Weaver is awesome for party coverage, but you need some serious GOD-work.  Also, going on the basis of FR being available, you're at the level to REALLY cook with Circle Magic.  Red Wizard 5 gets you 9th level spells with enough help (aka summons/sims/cohorts/party/mind slaves, etc).  And you can snag Arcane Manipulation and a Ring of Wizardry I too :D

Don' heal in combat unless you're casting Heal. It sounds like your party needs less focus on healing, more on buffing and battle control.

Post game report, went with the druid cohort, used a fusion of the above builds (-1 level as suggested.) Precast buffs + extend rod, stacking Barkskin and Shield of Faith kept the monkey gripping fighter and the rogue from sucking sod. They got tagged a couple of times with primary attacks but skipped out on most of the iterative attacks - kept the in combat heals to a minimum. Worked the summons angle, Unicorn for additional heals when needed plus small critters for flanking and soaking up AoO's. We were able to run the full 4 hour session without having to retreat. It worked well. Thanks guys.
