Concerning cost reducers in crafting.
« on: September 11, 2010, 10:53:48 PM »
What do people think of using the crafting cost reducers that are in the DMG?  Are they unacceptable to use with a PC crafter?

Specifically, on page 282.
If an item requires a specific skill, it has a -10% reduction.
If an item requires a specific alignment or class, it has a -30% reduction.

It seems that it would make it too easy of a choice for a PC to use these reducers all the time.
Besides making your items cost cheaper, it would have a built in "safety" with the restrictions on it.

They're generally considered pretty cheesy. You're making better items for less that your enemies can't utilize. Though it does knock the resale value way down, this really isn't an issue for things like scrolls and wands.

However, they are in the rules, so make use of them if your DM will let you.

Even better, they stack with feats and other abilities that have similar uses! I believe you can get the cost down to like 2% of the normal price for magic items if you use them all. Yum.

I dare anyone to find a hole in that logic.

I thought it seemed kind of cheesy, I just wanted some optimizers' opinions though.  Thank you.

Now would it be considered cheesy to use those reducers in conjunction with the Ancestral Relic feat?
It seems appropriate since it's only one item, and it is an item that your character would have a sort of tie or bond with.

That's certainly a very good idea for optimization, especially in a high-powered game. This works for kensai, psionic weapon master, and the Item Familiar feat, as well. I'm sure we can find other uses, too. if we try.

Anyone want to try this with a soulbound weapon?

IIRC, they're part of the "guidelines", so most people ignore them since they're completely broken.
