Full Initiators That Ignore Strikes
« on: August 24, 2010, 03:49:03 AM »
It's often said of ToB classes that they don't generally full attack, relying instead on strikes to do most of their attacking. While this grants them mobility and provides a wide variety of nifty effects, it also cuts them out of a lot of nifty full-attack optimizing, including sneak-attack/source-of-bonus-damage shenanigans, ubercharge setups, and the like.
What can be done with Tome of Battle builds that focus mostly or entirely on boosts, counters, and stances?

I suppose you'd have melee types that can ubercharge and pull full attack shenanigans.....

Think of your typical warrior, but now he reliably uses swift actions.  He can use Thicket of Blades, or Leaping Dragon Stance, or Martial Spirit.

In my experience, I built a Hood who didn't rely on strikes.  There was no need when I could one-shot or one-round anything just by normal damage.
Hood - My first answer to all your build questions; past, present, and future.

Speaking of which:
Don't even need TO for this.  Any decent Hood build, especially one with Celerity, one-rounds [Azathoth, the most powerful greater deity from d20 Cthulu].
Does it bug anyone else that we've reached the point where characters who can obliterate a greater deity in one round are considered "decent?"

Ranged martial adepts ignore strikes.  Raging Mongoose, Dancing Mongoose, Lion's Roar, White Raven Tactics, Time Stands Still, and the various save boosting maneuvers can fill out a Warblade's maneuvers without killing his full attack ability.  There's also Pouncing Charge, of course.

Factotum 8 into initiator class can greatly help utilize strikes. :)

Nitpick: TSS is a Strike. :P

Generally speaking, a Full Attack is going to be slightly stronger damage-wise than a Strike, but you aren't able to move when using a Full Attack (unless you have Pounce). The advantage of Strikes is that you can stay mobile without suffering a major loss in Damage output, allowing you to both Tank and engage other threats.

Retributive Builds rely on Damaging attackers on thier turns ... can do a lot ... the more AoOs the higher the damage(Robilars Gambit + Double Hit + Girallons Windmill + Two Weapon Rend)

Yeah, fundamentally, most of them make use of a lot of mix and match, you move, Boost and then Strike, then Boost and full attack, then probably it's time to reload and attack if you're a warblade.

It's also a little cold because of that.

And the things it reflects in, like water or glass, can all be broken, right? Since the moon you see in the sky is just being reflected in the heavens, if you tear open the heavens it's easy to break it~"

Suddenly I want to make a Squall/Leon Gunblade adept class, focusing on Iron heart and godknowswhat.

Levels of fighter count as full IL for the purposes of maneuvers gained without other initiator classes.

I don't seem to be able to find it. Perhaps it's a houserule someone mentioned that I'm confusing with an actual rule.

The closest thing si the Warblade's Weapon Aptitude, but that's sort of the inverse.

Warblade Levels count as Fighter levels -2 for prerequisites.  Thus, a Fighter4/Warblade1 counts as a Fighter3 in terms of prereqs, and messes with my sensibilities, especially if I have Weapon Specialization.
