Help with creating a BBEG, Mind Switched Red Dragon
« on: August 11, 2010, 03:18:13 PM »
So, this time I have a new idea for a BBEG!

It's a DRAGON (how original), but not any old dragon, this dragon has been attacked by a powerful psion who succeeded in using mind switch on it, and now it is an old red dragon, with the powers of a 17+ level psionic.

However, as I'm not that sharp in Psionics, I'm going to ask your help.

First, do you think I should make it as a Telepath or an Erudite?

What powers would be useful to a dragon? I'm thinking of getting him that time-stop like power, but I'm not sure about it.

Thanks in advance!

Remember that it won't have access to all of the dragon abilities, namely the breath weapon. It could fake one with the appropriate psi-power, though (Breath of the Black Dragon). Having a "red" dragon breathe acid might throw the PCs for a loop, also. :D

Schism, Anticipatory Strike, Danger Sense, and Temporal Acceleration are pretty much "must haves", IMO. The first is from Complete Psi, and the second is from Magic of Eberron, IIRC.
A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.
...thanks

It might be simpler to use the stats of a gem dragon of some kind. Or just apply the phrenic template to the dragon.

Switching the spellcasting for equivalent manifesting shouldn't affect the CR too much, but first apply the loredrake sovereign archetype to remove the cleric/domain spells, gain another two levels of casting, and reduce HD by one size.

In other words, if the dragon had 6th-level casting, subtract 1hp per Hit Die and give it 8th-level manifesting. Don't forget to take the Practiced Manifester feat.

EDIT: For evilness, have the dragon take five levels of the psionic adaptation of abjurant champion... and give it ardent manifesting. :D

My work
The tier system in a nutshell:
Tier 6: A cartographer.
Tier 5: An expert cartographer or a decent marksman.
Tier 4: An expert marksman.
Tier 3: An expert marksman, cartographer and chef who can tie strong knots and is trained in hostage negotiation or a marksman so good he can shoot down every bullet fired by a minigun while armed with a rusted single-shot pistol that veers to the left.
Tier 2: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything, or the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
Tier 1: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything and the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
Barring trickery, he'll need to be able to manage manifester level 28 to mind switch with an old red dragon.  There are things that boost manifester level, but what level psion were you looking to use?

The original plan had him switch with a juvenile red dragon and then he has lived for years in slumber in the form. Now when he is old he has decided to take action, and recover the empire his father lost. Almost 400 years before that. This puts him as at least a 17th level Telepath with overchannel. So I'll probably make him an 18th level telepath.

I will have to look into what powers he has kept, and I think it will be a telepath after all, as I've always wanted to stat that out.

I thought true mind switch exchanged everything but powers. But guess I was wrong, oh well, I'll just need to stat it out with his HP.

But thanks! This is the info I need.
