Need a Swashbuckler for Horror campaign
« on: August 07, 2010, 06:24:17 AM »
I'm having trouble conceptualizing a swashbuckler in a horror camapign setting. Why would a swashbuckler be in a setting like that?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Shouldn't this be in Min/Max? Or Deliberations?

Anyways, think of Pirates of Dark Water or Pirates of the Caribbean.

Well, not single-classed swashbuckler, obviously.

Yeah, this should be in min/max if it's a build you're after. But anywho, what kind of horror campaign? More pirates, where it's supernatural in an otherwise normal place, or resident evil, or castlevania, or...

Swashbuckler can work pretty well.  As Flay pointed out, dark creepy dudes with rapiers fit in quite well in horror settings (and they don't have to be half vampire! :p).  Kurashu makes a good suggestion with pirate.

Really, if you figure on the bare bones of a swashbuckler as being a "lightly armored combatant who focuses on mobility and finesse", you have a lot of options open to you.  You can go anywhere from:
- assassin
- pirate
- brigand/bandit
- noble/gentleman
- scoundrel

Personality could be anywhere from light-hearted to quite serious, really.  You don't have to play a goofy slap stick character to run a swashbuckler.

Also, as far as the build is concerned, I'd suggest mixing in 3 or 4 levels of rogue and taking Daring Outlaw (from Complete Scoundrel).  You'll likely want to find some magic that will let you sneak attack undead creatures if you're in a horror game.

I had this awesome mental imagery of some gentleman in a suit and a monocle surrounded by horrors.

There's nothing slapstick or goofy about a Daring Outlaw build Inigo Montoya. Actually, make that a changeling, and you get loads of skills for whatever you need (like acrobatics/jump), you probably could make a rather creepy swash yourself.

Sorry, I just really wanna play that build for the changeling racial class features.

Well, it's a very low magic setting so magic items and healing are few and far between. Sort of a late 18th century steampunk.

I want to keep the martial aspect at a premium, I feel I may need it. I did like the suggestion about the pirate.
