Optimizing a Horizon Walker as a Teleporting Assassin
« on: August 02, 2010, 06:57:05 PM »
I was looking through my books, and saw the Horizon Walker's Shifting Planar Terrain Mastery, obtainable upon reaching Horizon Walker 6, which gives Dimension Door every 1d4 rounds at a caster level equal to your class level. I thought this could make for a very cool teleporting assassin, And I've been trying to come up with the best way to implement it. Horizon Walker is clearly designed with ranger in mind as the entry class, or druid, but I think it's probably doable with plenty of other classes, most obviously Scout. I think sneak attack would be better for this build than skirmish, but the Knowledge (geography) requirement puts back entry into Horizon Walker by several levels. Also, I'm not really sure how to end the build after 6 levels of HW.

TL;DR: Horizon Walker as a basis for a teleporting assassin-type character, any ideas?

Tefflamar Shadowlord?  Cirinthi Shadow Marauder?  Shadowpouncing is fun!

Beaten to the punch, but I was going to say that it's a pretty popular entry to teflammar shadowlord. If there's a way of decreasing the rounds in-between, that'd be awesome.

I have built 2 characters using that model, but they were both archers. I would use the teleportation to set up sneak attacks and to escape after I had finished. It does help to use the first 5 levels of HW to gain big skill boosts and darkvision. One of them was actually a successful assassin by teleporting in during the night and Coup De Grasing targets with a pick and sneak attack.
Clerics and Druids are like the 4 and 2 in 42. Together they are the answer to the ultimate question in D&D.
Retire the character before the DM smacks you with the Table as the book will feel totally inadequate now.-Hazren

Well, that's what I get for getting away from the game for a year. I was well aware of Telflammar Shadowlord, but the thought never occurred to me when i was posting.  I even knew that HW6 was a popular entry for it. :banghead

Where is blade of orien? I feel like i've seen that, or heard of it, but have no clue where it's from or what it does.

Dragonmarked, iirc.  It's an Eberron prestige class using dragonmarks all about teleportation (usually short range).  It seems to be a decent lead in to shadowpouncing, although I remember worrying that it has enough teleports per day for someone dedicated to it.

Yes, it's Dragonmarked, no it doesn't synergize at all.

Don't activate on all teleportation effects, unlike Shadowpounce.

Wow. Never seen the fifth level ability. Isn't there a spell that gives you Nat 20 once during it's duration?
The two together give a 1/day automatic villain-esque escape. :)
It always seems like the barrels around here have something in them.

Surge of Fortune is the spell you're looking for, Sky.  I love that spell for so many reasons.

Yes, there is. From one of the Eberron books, iirc. Cannot remember it's name, though.

edit: Beaten to the punch on this one. /edit.

JPM does the same type deal, but fiery, and with an explosive effect. It's true, there was a JPM in charge of Hogwarts.

Sometimes, their tits (3.5) get enhancements (houserules), but that doesn't mean people don't like nice tits.

Though sometimes, the surgeon (DM) botches them pretty bad...

Fiery discorporation is a Kineticist ability.

Swordsage or Ruby Knight Vindicator makes for spiffy synergy.
Hood - My first answer to all your build questions; past, present, and future.

Speaking of which:
Don't even need TO for this.  Any decent Hood build, especially one with Celerity, one-rounds [Azathoth, the most powerful greater deity from d20 Cthulu].
Does it bug anyone else that we've reached the point where characters who can obliterate a greater deity in one round are considered "decent?"
