Spell Casting Question
« on: June 21, 2010, 11:14:27 PM »
I thought I once read some where that a player can not cast the same spell twice in a row. Like two hastes, or fireballs.

So here is the question. Is this true? If so where is this located?
Does it mean that you cant caste the same spell twice in one round? Or say you ended your action with a magic missle, does that mean you cant cast it again for your first spell cast on your next action?

Anyways some clarification on this would be nice, if it even exists.  :D

This isn't true generally speaking.  You might have been reading a stupid-ass house rule or the conditions to activate some specialist feat or class feature.  If so, I've never seen it.
"We managed to make an NPC puke an undead monster."
"That sounds like a victory to me."

Ya others I was speaking with have not heard of this either.   I am pretty sure I read it here somewhere on the forums, so it may be a house rule or item creation thing as you said.

Anyone else?

For future reference, questions like this fit nicely into the Ask A Simple Question threads.
"We managed to make an NPC puke an undead monster."
"That sounds like a victory to me."

Thirded. That's pretty much completely untrue.

Well, don't crusaders have a vaguely similar thing with their manuevers?

Then again, crusaders get expended maneuvers back.

Sharns can't cast from the same spelllist with both their actions :D

But yeah, in general you can cast the same spell over and over again.  There are even a few that rely on it!

Isn't this a holdover from the fluff of Vancian casting where you have prepped the spell in your mind and therefore could not cast it twice because once you do it has left your mind and you would have to re-prepare it?

This is correct. But they mean you can't use the same spell slot to cast a spell twice.

The only other thing I can think of is the Tactical feats in Complete Mage that are based on what spells you cast, and the Spell Turrets from DMG2.

I wonder if there is some conflating of notions of spell casting and with the same spell's effects stacking.

Could also be using the Recharge Magic Variant from the SRD/UA.
