Magic: Elder Dragon Highlander
« on: June 07, 2010, 09:00:58 PM »
The penultimate casual format, revolving around cheap rares and zany uncommons more than $10-$20 lands and $80 Jace the Mindfuckers.

Full rules.

Trying to give this format more attention, so we can talk the DCI into making it an official format.

My playgroup recently started making decks for this. We've played a few games and it has been awesome.

A somewhat useful summary of the available generals was done here:
http://www.starcitygames.com/magic/misc/19349_You_Lika_The_Juice_Rating_the_Generals.html
He makes a few mistakes, but overall its a worthwhile read.

Our decks thus far:

Doran, the Siege Tower
Sliver Legion
Braids (The Blue one)
Brion Stoutarm
Zur, the enchanter
Ashling the Pilgrim
Jhoira

Under construction:
Tolsimir Wolfblood
Ghost Council of Orzhova

This format is fantastic. I only lack a wide enough array of cards to make the most of my legends.

Right now I have plans for a deck running Sygg, River Cutthroat and a variety of life draining cards, maybe some blue ping-y stuff too.

Interesting idea, torn between Hazezon Tamar, Ulasht the Hate Seed, Rhys the Redeemed, and Rofellos Llanowar Emissary. Given I could put the first three in one deck if I ran Tamar.  :smirk

Rofellos is banned as a General as of June. They admit that it was a mistake to unban him for a year.

Eh, he probably would have lead to a rather mindless deck anyways.

My playgroup really enjoys playing EDH, in fact I played four games tonight, one of which I won!

The decks in my meta include:
Captain Sisay (mine)
Thada Adel, Acquisitor (also mine)
Reaper King
Wrexial, the Deep Risen
Hanna, Ship's Navigator
Jhoira of the Ghitu
Lorthos the Tidemaker
Nemata, Grove Guardian
Korlash, Heir to Blackblade
Braids (Blue)
Uril, the Miststalker
Momir Vig, Simic Visionary

And I'm probably forgetting some...

As for under-construction, I'm working on a Uril Deck of my own, as well as a Numot the Devastator build. Someone else is working on a Sisters of Stone Death deck (this would be the owner of Reaper King and Wrexial).
Currently playing:
Forte Lulz, Chaotic EVIL Bard bent on world domination;
Canere Potentia, to sing of power.
Aralaxax, Warforged Osteomancer, Machines are my people, I wield bones as other wield swords.
Randall Gray, she's not sexually confused, honest!
Zion "I can make followers, but why bother when people line up for me?"
Currently DMing: Real Men Use Their Hands, World's Largest Dungeon
"If you can pretend to be a half-orc barbarian or a dwarf wizard then you can pretend to be an alpha male."-Ninjarabbit
"The hotel shop only had two decent books, and I'd written both of them."-Douglas Adams
"It's funny how the Earth never opens up and swallows you when you want it to." Xander Harris, Buffy the Vampire Slayer

100 card decks and nothing can be the same name. Sounds interesting and playable. What I don't get is the general rules.

This is 100% in the opposite direction of the general rule. The flavor of the rule seems to promote this idea your deck revolves around your commander, then you consider the odds of a 1 in 100 draw chance and compare to say your 1 in 15 with a standard deck which never gives you the card you want. The general has anything to do with deck themes or color at all either. In fact it comes across like a absolute failure of color limitation. I mean I don't know about you but I'm not going to randomly toss red in a blue/white deck and there are plenty of 3~5 color legends. The general and his color limitation come across like a guy asking if he should ban conjuration with his fighter. The only appropriate response is to just scratch your head and pretend he is making a joke.

Suggested revisions
1. 40 card decks
2. The general and two cards linked thematically to the general's abilities but cost less in mana cost start in an exiled state and can be played as a sorcery on any of your turns.

1. Wam-bam-thank-you-mam games have more replay value than ones that last 30 minutes thus lower card count. Instead of not killing someone for 9 minutes because you didn't want him sitting on the side lines while you guys continue for the next fifteen, aim for losing first just gives you enough time to shuffle. Hey now one feels like they are dragging their feet instead of having a good time. If you want to amass huge forces against your foe in a long drawn out game I suggest Risk or Monopoly.

2. Now the general always hits the table (casual gaming, you'll live long enough to obtain a reasonable amount of mana). What's more is before he does hit the table stuff that operates like him came out before, they could be lieutenants (if creatures) or far flung spells from the general as he wades his way into battle.

I think you may be misunderstanding some aspects of the format.

1) The general starts in the "Command Zone", and may be cast from there. When he would leave the battlefield, he is instead put back in the "Command Zone".

2) EDH is primarily, if not overwhelmingly, a multiplayer format.

Those two things make it so that generals play a huge part in every game, even with there being 100 cards in each deck. I have yet to play in a game of EDH where the generals were not of vital importance to how the game played out.

I flat out missed 1 (to be fair I was up 27 hours yesterday), or maybe my cunning idea to pull the general out came from the rules and I forgot the source in a record time. *shurgs*

Correction: If he would be Exiled or put into a Graveyard from the Battlefield, you may return him to the Command Zone.

Double correction: If the general would be put into a graveyard or exile from anywhere you can send it to the command zone.

Basically, if he isn't in play, hes in the command zone.

Unless it gets returned to hand or put into the library, making cards like Condemn and Hinder better.
