Am I missing something?
« on: May 31, 2010, 10:53:33 PM »
Ok so I was looking over the truenaming classes and Disciple of the Word struck me as insanely good. Once per round you can activate a whole bunch of useful and cool effects as an immediate action, and most of them are borderline overpowered. You gain the ability to substitute a single skill check in place of

A reflex save
A dispel check (delivered by touch)
A Balance, jump, or tumble check
To overcome damage reduction up to epic
A strength check vs bull rush, trip, or disarm
You can avoid an attack 1/day
You can avoid spells that target only you unlimited times per day
You can attempt a DC 50 check to gain a lesser celerity effect.

And it doesn't interrupt your monk skill progression at all.

So why don't I see more of it?

  • It can only be attributable to human error.

Most of those abilities are limited by the number of stunning fist attempts you have per day. Which means that you would run out of that resource very quickly during the day.

... Since most Monks only have a few levels in actual monk. If you take it straight-classed, it becomes better :p

In all honesty most of those abilities are decent at best and not that great and bring limited by the number of stunning fist attempts you have is another strike. It's still not enough to salvage the monk class.

Tome of Magic, since it's based on truenaming
Eh, the wizard have more money than them combined, he could in theory just use all his money on a fleet of trained attack mules, but then we aren't playing 3.5 but zergling rushing in Starcraft instead.

Because no one is aware of Monk being longer than two levels?

It stacks with your monk level for number of stunning fist uses, and there's the Extra Stunning feat.

Also many good monk prestige class options stack for determining uses of stunning fist (then again, many of them are psychic warrior/tashalatora or sacred fist)
