Suggestions for salvaging character
« on: May 31, 2010, 05:13:49 AM »
My character isn't fitting into the campaign too well, and I need some sound suggestions for keeping her.  What I have is a focused specialist conjurer 3, and we just passed 2 levels in an all day marathon session. So I'm 5th level with 2 to choose. I was going to go wizard 4 sorc 1 and then ultimate magus 10.  Outside of some sculpted grease spells and a few glitterdusts I havent done much, and I've grown kinda bored with this character. I have cast 12 spells, and our last session was mostly underwater, nullifying my battlefield control abilities. Stat wise I have:

str 10
dex 16
con 12
int 18
wis 12
cha 16

We are allowed any WotC book and 1 flaw. I have non combatant chosen, but could easily switch it.  I was thinking of taking a few bard levels since she's kind of a know it all type.  Taking all reasonable gish or alternate spell casting progression suggestions.  Never really done the caster thing, I'm kind of at a loss.  If it helps any, we are doing the Enworld campaign "The Burning Sky." (No spoilers please) and we just finished the burning forest.

How is focused conjurer not fitting too well?  What exactly is it that you need to do, that you can't either do for yourself, or make a summon do for you?

Are you sure this isn't just a case of not making the best use of the resources you already have?

Well, I think its a little of both.  Combat has been sparse lately, and I'm bored with grease, glitterdust and summoning wolves to trip people.  Thus far its been a roleplaying heavy campaign, and while everyone else is moving silently or making diplomacy rolls I'm just kinda chillin.  I like my character, but I want to spice her up, I don't think Ultimate Magus is for me.  Just looking for some feasible gishs build that incorporate wiz 3. Or, I saw in the UM handbook a suggested build using bard and sublime chord, but the guide didn't go into details.

You could always work your way into Malconvoker, and slowly lose your mind over the constant inner battle between good intentions and evil methods and temptations.  That'd still keep your conjuration focus (and substantially boost it, for the summoning subset of conjuration) while still giving you plenty of opportunity to participate when things turn to noncombat drama.

Things will pick up once you reach level 5. Summon monster 3 is one of the best summon spells for its level and you get some gems like sleet storm, stinking cloud, phantom steed, Melf's Unicorn Arrow, and dimension step.

I don't get how you can be be bored with a conjurer, it's the most flexible school of magic. Here's a few low level spells that are interesting and fun: mount, benign transpositation, wall of smoke, hail of stone, unseen servant, web, fog cloud, and dimension hop. And even underwater you still can summon fiendish octopuses and fiendish medium sharks.

I second the malconvoker, but what feats do you have? Are they at all flexible, with your DM? If he knows that you are unhappy, he might let you tweak your character a little. Here's a handbook for the malconvoker if you want to  take a look.  http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=289.0

I see that you want to solve problems. Not problems like, "What is beauty?," because that would fall within the purview of your conundrums of 'philosophy'. You want to solve practical problems. F'r instance, how are you gonna stop some big, mean Mother Hubbard from tearing you a structurally superfluous new behind? The answer: Use a gun. And if that don't work? Use more gun.
And if that fails try this

If your campaign is more social and your DM frowns on you just enchanting people then you could always take a level of spell thief and at level six go into Unseen Seer. Unseen Seers are a good combination of Rogue/Wizard and should give you lots of options in and out of combat. Their is also a feat called master spell thief in complete scoundrel which can help out if you go this route.

I read over the Malkonvoker, and it sounds pretty cool.  I may have to try it, still having lingering thoughts about a gish of some kind too.  Thanks for all the info.

So, I should just stay the course and roll with ultimate magus is what your saying. Focused conjurer 4/sorcerer 1/UM10?

I'm having a lot of fun with Focused Transmuter 5 (substitution level: Spontaneous Divination)/Knight of the Weave 1/UM (currently 5, planning on running it to 10 and possibly capping with fatespinner 4). Add in a reserve feat and a decent metamagic feat or two. I'm using extend and maximize (but I'm more blastery than I really ought to be), you might want to look into extend and either twin or repeat.
