Mantle of the Firey/Icy Spirit were printedin Sandstorm/Frostburn respectively. Only Icy Soul was updated in Spell Compendium.
I hate the spell compendium. It ridiculously nerfed tons of spells. Some of them needed it; most didn't.
One example is Blade of Pain and Gnashing (might have the name wrong). It's a Clr 2/ Sor/Wiz2 spell that is basically acts exactly like the Druid 2 Flame Blade, except it doesn't have typed damage (not fire damage, etc). It deals 1d6+ 1/2 caster level damage, and lasts 1 min/level (in Libris Mortis), just like Flame Blade, but was nerfed to 1 round/level in SC.
That's probably because it doesn't have a damage type and therefore was so much better than Flame Blade. While nerfing removes nice tricks, you shouldn't hate nerfing just because you can't always see a reason for it. The writer's job is to keep the game balance, not to maintain your favorite cheap tricks.
I wouldn't call a spell that is
exactly like another spell (and core at that), save for the damage type, a cheap trick.
But, I'll also admit I detest all the spell duration shortenings WotC pulled in 3.5 in general (Invisibility was 10 mins/level in 3.0 and earlier editions). Their idea of every spell only being good for one combat is bogus.
