Digging out a lair
« on: May 16, 2010, 03:38:32 PM »
So, I recently took the Dragon Cohort feat and was entrusted with a Very Young Silver Dragon by its Ancient mother who didn't have the patience to raise it (as per Draconomicon).

However, the DM and I are at a loss in terms of digging out a lair.  The Dragon does not have a burrow speed, however the Draconomicon explicitly states that the dragon will attempt to dig out a lair.  So, we're trying to figure out WHERE, if anywhere, is information on how much can be dug out in the creation of the lair and at what speed.

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!

Hardness and hp vary by material and thickness, deal enough damage and a 5' cube of material is destroyed, leaving empty space and probably some debris.

Races of the dragon has a chart on digging speeds, although I can't remember the pg.#

I see that you want to solve problems. Not problems like, "What is beauty?," because that would fall within the purview of your conundrums of 'philosophy'. You want to solve practical problems. F'r instance, how are you gonna stop some big, mean Mother Hubbard from tearing you a structurally superfluous new behind? The answer: Use a gun. And if that don't work? Use more gun.
And if that fails try this

Kobolds wind up being the answer to every problem, don't they?

I don't know what is more sad. That people don't expect it or the fact that people can expect it.

The bigger ones would just use magic, or use their large size to give the corresponding bonuses to mining speed.

That's why you use kobolds.  They're swarms of evil little miners.  Its like having the xenophobic, reptilian equivalent of the seven dwarves at your command.
DM: The iron door is enchanted with a powerful anti-magic barrier.
Zavy: The door itself?
DM: Yes.
Zavy: I get acid flasks and a pry bar.  I just found myself a new tower shield.

You could spend weeks pounding at rock with magic, or you could get a bunch of pet kobolds.
I know which one is more conducive to spending the next few years lying on shinies.

"Just what do you think the moon up in the sky is? Everyone sees that big, round shiny thing and thinks there must be something round up there, right? That's just silly. The truth is much more awesome than that. You can almost never see the real Moon, and its appearance is death to humans. You can only see the Moon when it's reflected in things. And the things it reflects in, like water or glass, can all be broken, right? Since the moon you see in the sky is just being reflected in the heavens, if you tear open the heavens it's easy to break it~"

Of course, another possibility is that the dragon tries to make its lair...in a cloud.

Silvers explicitly do that.
I am constantly amazed by how many DM's ban Tomb of Battle.  The book doesn't even exist!

Why would you even do this? It hurts my eyes and looks like you ate your keyboard before suffering an attack of explosive diarrhea.

If using Genesis to hide your phylactry, set it at -300 degrees farenheit.  See how do-gooders fare with a liquid atmosphere.

Are there actually any rules for that?

Other than their Cloudwalk ability, not really.  Just fluff text.

It's just textual in the Draconomicon that they do it... they have cloud walk and use permanent walls of force to make floors for their belongings and what not... but the Dragon's not old enough to cast any spells at all...

Hence it will have to have some other trick for building something up in the clouds, like you, paying a wizard to cast a permanent wall of force for it's treasure.
Monks are pretty much the best designed class ever.
