Feats for Bugs?
« on: May 07, 2010, 03:07:36 AM »
My DM has agreed that mindless creatures which gain Int scores by way of an inherited template are entitled to skill points and feats (though all skills are to be cross-class skills for them).  Looking at this Summon Monster III fiendish Huge centipede with Improved Unarmed Strike, Improved Grapple, and Earth's Embrace (Grapple +21 and 1d12 extra damage/round on maintained pin :smirk), I got to thinking maybe someone else has done the same before, with more time available to think over their choices.

Is there some sort of list around of recommended feat setups for summoned bugs?

Depends on what's being summoned.  Summon Monster I gives you 1 HD giant fire beetles, monstrous centipedes, scorpions, and spiders.  At the other extreme, Summon Monster IX provides a scorpion with 20 HD and a spider with 32.

A 32 HD spider will get epic feats... that's going to be scary...

Oh christ, I didn't even think of that.  As if a malconvoker summoning fiendish spiders weren't bad enough.

* extra smiting
* ability focus (poison) + virulent poison
* epic monsters can take epic feats!
* savage species feats can be fun: consider e.g. crush, final strike; check also draconomicon (large and in charge..)

Give it gauntlets on the end of each leg and then perfect multiweapon fighting...

For the lower-HD critters, any opinions on Spit Poison from LoM?

Lucky bugger...my DM used the existing stats in the SRD, which does not list any feats for fiendish vermin.  :(

A clear conscience is the surest sign of a failing memory.

My work
The tier system in a nutshell:
Tier 6: A cartographer.
Tier 5: An expert cartographer or a decent marksman.
Tier 4: An expert marksman.
Tier 3: An expert marksman, cartographer and chef who can tie strong knots and is trained in hostage negotiation or a marksman so good he can shoot down every bullet fired by a minigun while armed with a rusted single-shot pistol that veers to the left.
Tier 2: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything, or the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
Tier 1: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything and the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
I don't think he's gonna go for flaws.  Thanks for the reminder on the Mage Slayer line, though.

Mine initially seemed like he was going to go the same way.  I pointed out that even in their type description vermin are granted some skill points to work with, and it's only the Mindless trait that robs them of that.  Something with Int 3 by definition isn't mindless, that seemed to satisfy him.  He might change his tune after experiencing a few of my bugs, though.
