Anyone ever play the old MUDs?
« on: April 23, 2010, 01:50:57 AM »
I was just wondering if anyone used to play or does play the DOS text-based MUDs (Multi-user Dungeon) that were popular before as many MMOs came out with graphics?

Just curious mostly, I have recently gotten back into the one I used to play (RavenMUD, but the population has taken a major hit since I went to college and WoW came out) and was reminded how a lot of my roleplaying experience actually comes from it. I was playing a MUD in middle school, which puts it 5-6 years before getting a lot of time with D&D or any other table top system (My dad used to play with us when I was very very young, but that fell off for awhile before I found MUDs).

So I was disappointed when the Shadowdancer PrC in D&D wasn't as cool as the Shadow Dancer class on my MUD, and when Rangers were randomly based on Drizzt (I hate Drizzt, he's not a Ranger and Drow suck + how the F*** did a dude who hangs out in the WOODS decide to get good at wielding two manufactured weapons?!?).

Yeah, I used to play on a MUD. I don't even remember the name of it, though. You started out at the Prancing Pony Inn and Barliman Butterbur was a badass. That's all I know.

A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.
...thanks

I used to play a few muds back in high school. It was about the only thing i could do using NetZero free dial up and a 133 mhz computer with 32mb of ram Win98 was great though.

The only details i really remember was playing one light/dark mud for a while and quitting because all of the high level guys from the other side would come to our starting town and murder everyone. I was also in a Wheel of Time mud where the admin was playing as Rand, i hadn't read the books so i didn't know who he was, and he ticked me off so i baelfired him. The world got reset and i was banned, i only ever went back with an alt once to see if the world had really been reset.
Clerics and Druids are like the 4 and 2 in 42. Together they are the answer to the ultimate question in D&D.
Retire the character before the DM smacks you with the Table as the book will feel totally inadequate now.-Hazren

I played one (I think it was called Medievia) where players went out on ships lined with seige weapons and killed sea monsters. It was a mechanic I hadn't seen in any of the other ones I tried. I suppose that's one thing I still like about them is that while they can't make what they do as impressive as a graphical game might they can still do a lot more (There still haven't been many games on the seas because programming water's behavior is such a nightmare).
