Encounter 3: Can't see the forest for the trees

When Xuuvosic arrives back at the mucklestones, it is immediately apparent that things have changed considerably since he left. While the clearing was previously devoid of trees, now there are several very large trees spread out among the stones.

Nothing seems to be happening other than some kind of weird tree invasion, though. So he stealthily goes about trying to find the correct stone.


OOC for Xuuvosic and whomever else is outside the pit:
[spoiler]Going to need your position, and those Spot, Listen, and Move Silently checks. And also your path through the stones.

And screw what I said earlier about you guys rolling to decide the correct one. I'll just secretly roll it myself. That's a lot simpler. Just tell me which ones you're checking in what order, and I'll tell you when/if you find it.[/spoiler]

Ris-Janna climbs out of the pit exactly the way she likes it - shrouded in darkness.

[spoiler]Spot, Listen, Hide, Move Silently (1d20+11=22, 1d20+11=25, 1d20+29=42, 1d20+31=43)
Init (1d20+17=27)
EDIT: And, for good measure: "Mental Hide" (1d20+13=33) Just in case we've got a nasty with Mindsight around.

One round before Xuusovic teleports, Ris-Janna uses her Darkness SLA on a copper piece, which she takes out of the pit with her. She can break line of effect by putting it back in a pocket or something. :P RJ can see in darkness of any kind and also has Blindsense out to 60 ft. None of the checks include penalties for moving quickly, but she gets to ignore up to -10 worth of penalties on MS.

I was gonna start with the very first from the left, which is 8, so let's go with that unless HoV has a better idea. [/spoiler]

As she climbs out of the pit and bathes the area around her in darkness, she notices that these trees have faces, and limbs that look suspiciously like hands. As the darkness descends on the area, the nearby ones start thrashing around a bit excitedly, but they obviously have no idea where she is as their flailing isn't even coming close to her.

Ris-Janna narrows her eyes. Friends of the tree guy? These don't seem to be hearing her all that well, though. She breifly considers hacking one of them up to vent, but the mission or whatever comes first. She casts the coin a few feet away, towards the next Mucklestone, before moving towards it herself to check up.

She moves to the next closest stone, but soon sees that it doesn't have the correct mark, either.

[spoiler]15 feet of movement, and you also used a move action getting out of the pit. We'll say you're in H8, I guess. None of the terrain is difficult, despite the map. The only obstacles are the stones and the "trees".[/spoiler]

As she moves, one of the trees says something in an unfamiliar* language, and the other trees stop flailing their limbs around and an eerie quiet settles on the area.

Then the tree speaks again, this time in a slow, halting common. "Use the portals as you wish and we will not interfere, but harm them at your peril."

After nothing happens, she picks up the coing again and makes haste to find the correct stone. Before activating it, she murmurs, "If I wanted to destroy them... I'd have killed you first."

You make your way around the stones, eventually finding the one with the correct markings (number 9 on the map). The trees do nothing to hinder you. They simply stand ominously over the stones and watch. As you lay your hand on it's cool surface, the runes light up. You simply think about where you want to go, and find yourself standing next to a stone with identical markings inside a small cavern. The cave stretches out to your right and left from where you stand, and down towards a dark stream in front of you.

The darkness vanishes and Xuuvosic can still see the runes glowing on the stone that Ris-Janna must have used.

Deciding against striking up a conversation with the trees, Xuuvosic flashes directly to the #9 stone and activates it.
