Long Distance Communication
« on: March 28, 2010, 06:03:02 PM »
I need some help with long distance communication in my campaign. Its a low magic campaign, with items being valued at approximately 5* base cost, so I obviously started up a mail order magic item system to abuse this, with craft wondrous items and craft magical arms and armor.

The party currently has access to 2nd level Adept casting, 2nd level Wizard Casting, and 2nd level Cleric casting, with possible use of home brewed unearthed arcana ritual magic to increase it slightly.

Currently for communication I am using human messengers on horses, but that is hideously slow and ineffective. I thought of using Divination spells (Scry or Clairvoyence) to look at notes layed out on a desk, but that's not for another level or two. Whispering Wind is okay, but has a limited range (5 miles at the moment).

Ideally, something that would allow for communcation over 100 miles or so and requires 3rd or 4th level spells that we could make a ritual to put into an item. Does such an item exist? Does anyone have any better ideas?

How about Aspect Mirror (Complete Scoundrel 113,  4000 gp/Mirror)?

Heck, selling long-distance communications is probably going to just as profitable as your magic items, if not more so.

From Core, there's Sending, which is a 4th level spell for Clerics.
It always seems like the barrels around here have something in them.

Tier 5: An expert cartographer or a decent marksman.
Tier 4: An expert marksman.
Tier 3: An expert marksman, cartographer and chef who can tie strong knots and is trained in hostage negotiation or a marksman so good he can shoot down every bullet fired by a minigun while armed with a rusted single-shot pistol that veers to the left.
Tier 2: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything, or the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.

Sending/Scrying/Aspect mirrors (which require scrying) are right up the alley, but I was hoping for something more low level than that, but all in all, that's not bad.

Sending Stones, page 184 in the Magic Item Compendium. They come in pairs. You can use them to get a Sending effect between the two once per day. They're 1400 gp.

Hive-minded creatures. Put one of the creatures in the hivemind at each destination, instant free telepathy.

They don't/haven't, was the point. 3.5 is as dead as people not liking nice tits.

Sometimes, their tits (3.5) get enhancements (houserules), but that doesn't mean people don't like nice tits.

Though sometimes, the surgeon (DM) botches them pretty bad...

There's Whispering Flame, from Five Nations, a 2nd level spell for Druids and Clerics.

Reminds me of something:
Tiffany: You know I have never seen a baby dragon.  I don't think I have ever heard of anyone who has seen a baby dragon.

Faden: Is that so?

Tiffany: Of course, I have never seen a baby squirrel either.  I just figured it was the same thing.

Faden: You mean that they reproduce by magical cloning and there is but one all-squirrel connected through a collective psychic consciousness?

Tiffany: What?

Faden: Nothing, never mind.  Go on with your theorizing.  It's fascinating.

All-Squirrel: The humans know of us.  We must take action.  We must act.  We must... collect and hide nuts.
Well, on the really low level end, Dancing Lights based semaphore system? You could get better distance between relay points with that.

And the things it reflects in, like water or glass, can all be broken, right? Since the moon you see in the sky is just being reflected in the heavens, if you tear open the heavens it's easy to break it~"
