Rust Monster

What class ability, feat, or other option would allow me to take a rust monster as a companion?

A bag of holding full of iron coins and a sufficiently high Handle Animal check (that can totally be used on Magical Beasts at a -10 penalty or something, right? Aim for a consistent DC 50 and you should be able to handle it).
So you end up stuck in an endless loop, unable to act, forever.

In retrospect, much like Keanu Reeves.

Get the thing awakened and have it become your cohort. As an extra bonus to this approach, an intelligent Rust Monster is waaaay easier to persuade to leave the other party members metal stuff alone, and thus dragging it along with the rest of the party wont make you a complete a-hole.

Special

You can use this skill on a creature with an Intelligence score of 1 or 2 that is not an animal, but the DC of any such check increases by 5. Such creatures have the same limit on tricks known as animals do.

there is your rule for Handle Animal.

Though i agree that catching then awakening one is your best bet if you can house rule that it is a valid target. Awaken only works on animals and trees and SC only has a new awaken clone for undead and constructs.

I should add that I'm asking because i'm making an Epic PrC that allows you a horde of Rust Monsters as a companion and I'm shopping for possible prerequisites for the class.  :D :D

Beast Heart Adept lets you attract aberration and magical beast companions similar to a druid's animal companion. While the Rust Monster isn't on the list, you could ask your DM if he'll allow it. You might also just befriend one with the Beast Heart Adept's Monster Empathy class feature.
