Not silly.  More characters (and players) have cut their teeth on this iconic staple of fantasy RPGs than any other creature.  Any creature that is that responsible for launching millions of characters' careers cannot possibly be silly.

Silly -- Crawling Head (FF).  It's a head.  that crawls.  and is destroyed by water.  "ahh! I'm melting; I'm melllllting!"  :eh

Not silly at all.  A human able to survive with so crippling a weakness would be totally badass.  Same with a human that can survive the loss of a limb and keep fighting.

Now this is a creature that managed to survive after losing ALL its limbs AND torso AND a crippling weakness.  To be so utterly focused upon survival, to prevail against all odds - truly, that is a spirit worth admiring.

What's silly is the Ravid.  I mean, they're like Trogdor with a bunch of pet toys.

Trogdor. That alone makes it not silly.

Vargouilles.

They are heads that detach and turn their ears into wings. I mean, come on!

Not silly. Imagine the horror of being slowly warped into one, having your human features warp, and finally your head afalls off. And worst of all, you've been smooched by one of them. Gross, but not silly.

The skin kite, on the other hand, is very silly. I mean, it's a kite. Of all the awesome, gross, and creepy things you can do with human skin, some necromancer goes and makes a kite for his kids? Seriously?

That's rather caring for a father to do with what materials are readily available.

Didn't we also already do that?

And I have nothing to add for silly monsters. :(

yeah, it was (by yours truly):  http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=7361.msg300055#msg300055

with a pretty weak rebuttal: http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=7361.msg324911#msg324911

And I still have nothing for why it isn't silly (the 2 presented are really stretching it :blink ... sorry :hmm)
(given the weakness of the rebuttals, I guess it did warrant revisiting)

Or maybe your argument for its sillyness was just that forgettable. ;)

I like the caring father argument, though. Who are we to call it silly if a poor, single dad has nothing to make his kid happy with but a bunch of human rags, and he makes the best of it?
...Yeah, it's still silly. And probably a bit traumatizing for the kid.

Since we seem to be out of silly at the moment I went to the store to get some, and guess what I found! It's a Kuo-Toa (DotU), they smell like fish and look like Gollums love child with a frog. Truly silly I must say

Not silly. They're kind of sad, actually. They want to be real aquatic threats but don't measure up to actual threats. They're kind of the (badly played) kobolds of the Underdark.

Silly: Ethergaunts (any); an entire race of wizards and they haven't managed to take over the world(s) yet?

Ethergaunts aren't silly, the other creature native to the ethereal plane is the ghost. If you played an entire campaign facing only ghosts, I don't care how much wizard you are, you'll be eaten alive, especially with TMLs silly ghost characters.

A silly creature? How about the Hydra. It has so many heads, it blood can't flow properly, unless it has 10 hearts, which in turns means it must have 5+ livers which severely messes the creature up. Also it's a long necked dinosaur that can only bite you and dies instantly to a level 2 spell. Why are these creatures not extinct from 3rd level wizards that decided to go up some levels fast?
Monks are pretty much the best designed class ever.

You want to give the Kobold more of an excuse to dump Constitution and pump Charisma so that it can grab Unholy Toughness and be entirely MAD? That's not silly, that's terrifying. :P

What is silly, though, is the Hoary Hunter. It has curly-toed shoes. I don't think I need to say more here.

Not silly, they have Santa's ear.  Cross them and all treasure you find will be coal.

Now what's really silly is a wyvern.  It's a dragon, without the dragon-ness, and it's too dumb to know what it's missing out on.

Not silly: it has a scorpion tail!  With poison!  And it's huge!

What's silly is a Bog Imp (Heroes of Horror).  It's basically a fey green goblin, but it makes people sink into the mud.

In the same way as the Hadoken runs on love, I imagine. Which is kind of scary. Also, it's a creepy jester. You want to tell the Joker to his face that he's silly?

Next up: The Roving Mauler (ToM). Behind the moderately badass name is... a lion's head attached to five legs, with literally nothing in between? What? :psyduck

not silly ... this tumble-whore gets to make an attack on every single creature whose space through which he tumbles -- that's bad-ass.

Not silly, the ability to act dead in a convincing way is an ability used with great success throughout the entire animal kingdom. It is a great way to survive those pesky adventurers instead of becoming random fodder.

Move your eyes to page 46 instead, to the Alkilith. A giant blob of being angry at stuff "Someone is hitting me with sharp things... Oh, a lake, I must pollute that". Silly
