A new way to avoid Will Saves? - Steely Focus
« on: February 21, 2010, 03:15:48 AM »
This spell should be added as a means to make a Will Save with a Concentration Check! First time I'm seeing it, and while it's linked in "Free D&D", it's not mentioned anywhere else!
Steely Focus
Transmutation
Level: Sor/Wiz 2
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Target: One creature touched
Duration: 1 hour/level
Saving Throw: Will negates (harmless)
Spell Resistance: Yes

Steely focus allows its target to resist magical distractions more easily. In place of a Will saving throw to resist the effects of a distracting spell (one that causes the target to lose actions) such as Tasha's hideous laughter or daze, the target of this spell can substitute a Concentration check. Further, the spell grants a +4 bonus on Concentration checks, and this bonus stacks with all other bonuses. Against mundane distractions requiring a Concentration check, this spell grants only the +4 bonus.
Read, every day, something no one else is reading. Think, every day, something no one else is thinking. Do, every day, something no one else would be silly enough to do. It is bad for the mind to be always part of unanimity.

That's very good, but the fact that it only works against spells, and only works against a small subset of spells (spells that make you lose actions) is very limiting.

At high levels however, it has a very small cost. It's only a second level spell and lasts hour/level. I think this is a good find.

Hmm...

IIRC, there's some sort of flaw or double-edged feat which makes you lose your next action if you fail a save.

Wow. That's fkn amazing. This would make a great Eternal Wand.

A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.
...thanks

Quick Recovery, Lords of Madness.  Gives you another save against stun or daze but takes a move action.
