Feats for a Sorcerer
« on: February 17, 2010, 06:40:35 AM »
Hello all.  As you may have guessed, I would like some suggestions for good feats for a sorcerer.  My character is a dragonwrought desert kobold.  My build is Sorcerer 5/Mage of the Arcane Order 9/Mindbender 1/XX 5.  I'm not sure what exactly I'm going to take in those last few levels, but I'm leaning toward Incantatrix. Spells are taken care of, and I'll post my list if it would help with feat selection.  My feats so far:

Sorc 1 - Dragonwrought, Arcane Preparation, [Metamagic Feat]
Sorc 3 - Cooperative Spell
Sorc 5/MotAO 1 - Draconic Reservoir
Sorc 5/MotAO 2 - [Metamagic Feat]
Sorc 5/MotAO 4 - [Open Feat]
Sorc 5/MotAO 7 - [Open Feat]
Sorc 5/MotAO 9 - [Metamagic Feat]
Sorc 5/MotAO 9/MB 1 - [Open Feat]
Sorc 5/MotAO 9/MB 1/XX 3 - [Open Feat]

Just to clarify, [Metamagic Feat] means that the feat taken must be a metamagic feat, while [Open Feat] can be any feat, metamagic or not.  Any and all feedback is appreciated.  I look forward to your replies.

Yup.  Otherwise I wouldn't touch the feat with a 10-foot pole.

Mindsight from Lords ofmadness is a no-brainer if you're a mindbender.

Otherwise I like improved initative, split ray if you have a few rays, empower spell, and quicken spell since you're taking arcane preparation.

Thanks for the replies!  To make things easier, I've decided to go ahead and post my spell list.

0 - Presitidigitation, Detect Magic, Read Magic, Message, Ghost Sound, Daze, Resistance, Light, Mending
1 - Magic Missile, Nerveskitter, Ray of Enfeeblement, Charm Person, Mage Armor
2 - Wings of Cover, Ray of Stupidity, Scorching Ray, Web, Invisibility
3 - Battlemagic Perception, Ray of Dizziness, Stinking Cloud, Slow
4 - Evard's Black Tentacles, Wings of Flurry, Polymorph, Celerity
5 - Wall of Force, Telekinesis, Overland Flight, Cloudkill
6 - Greater Dispel Magic, Acid Fog, Ruby Ray of Reversal
7 - Arcane Spellsurge, Antimagic Ray, Limited Wish
8 - Greater Arcane Fusion, Moment of Prescience, Prismatic Wall
9 - Gate, Shapechange, Time Stop

As you can see, a few of the feats suggested won't exactly work with my current spell list.  That being said, I think i can scrounge together a build with what has been suggested.  Just give me a minute.

@carnivore, I'm not worried about Eschew Materials, DM pretty much gives out that one for free.

It may be looked down upon but I'm going to throw the suggestion of Invisible Spell from Cityscape. It's a +0 metamagic feat and adds a lot of versatility to a build.

Invisible Spell, huh? Sounds like fun.  I'm sure I can work that in.  How about something like this:

Sorc 1 - Dragonwrought, Arcane Preparation, Heighten Spell
Sorc 3 - Cooperative Spell
Sorc 5/MotAO 1 - Draconic Reservoir
Sorc 5/MotAO 2 - Invisible Spell
Sorc 5/MotAO 4 - Versatile Spellcaster
Sorc 5/MotAO 7 - Quicken Spell
Sorc 5/MotAO 9 - Fell Drain
Sorc 5/MotAO 9/MB 1 - Mindsight
Sorc 5/MotAO 9/MB 1/XX 3 - Split Ray

So, what do you all think?  Any other suggestions?

Quicken Spell is generally a bad feat for a Sorcerer, even with Arcane Preperation.  Think about it: how many times are you going to use it with Arcane Spellsurge on your list?  Most likely never.  Trade that for something else.  Perhaps Extra Spell?  Another spell known doesn't hurt.

I am constantly amazed by how many DM's ban Tomb of Battle.  The book doesn't even exist!

especially if you can get your dm to nab it off of any spell list.  I do believe there is a paragraph in the sorc section of the PHB saying something about sorcs and druid spells. work with that, and try to convince your DM.

OK, let's say I trade Quicken Spell for Extra Spell.  I think i have a reasonable chance to convince my DM to let me get spells off other lists.  What would you suggest for the new spell?

You need a teleportation spell.  I notice you currently have none.  This doesn't sound like much, but the ability to teleport is HUGE.  You can make up for this shortcoming via a Runestaff if need be, but it's worth knowing Dimension Door.  Freedom of Movement is another good choice as it isn't normally on the Sorcerer list.  If you can convince your DM to let you select a non-sorcerer spell, that's your best bet.

I second FoM, it's generally an awesome spell.  the range is "personal or touch", meaning you can both buff others with it and persist it on yourself.  it might also be possible to cast a persisted one on yourself, and rod chain it to others, depending on how the range gets interpreted. you cast a personal spell with persist spell, and then chain it onto legal targets. not sure if that actually works, but would be funny as hell.  even without persist, it's a 10min/lvl spell.

OK, looks like I'm going with Extra Spell.  I'll check with my DM, just to make sure I can get Freedom of Movement.  If I can, awesome.  If not, I can still nab Dimension Door or Teleport.  So, for my updated feats:

Sorc 1 - Dragonwrought, Arcane Preparation, Heighten Spell
Sorc 3 - Cooperative Spell
Sorc 5/MotAO 1 - Draconic Reservoir
Sorc 5/MotAO 2 - Invisible Spell
Sorc 5/MotAO 4 - Versatile Spellcaster
Sorc 5/MotAO 7 - Extra Spell (Freedom of Movement) [Pending DM approval]
Sorc 5/MotAO 9 - Fell Drain
Sorc 5/MotAO 9/MB 1 - Mindsight
Sorc 5/MotAO 9/MB 1/XX 3 - Split Ray

are you doing the loredrake thing? cause if so, FoM is the least of your DM's worries.

Oh lordy, no.  There are limits to what my DM will allow, even in a high powered campaign.

hehe, figured. greater draconic rite is an equalizer, putting the sorc to the same spell level progression as a wizard. loredrake is... well... loredrake.
