Fun with changelings
« on: February 06, 2010, 09:09:06 PM »
Well, as my last character got killed off by a deck of many things i need to roll up a new one. I decided I wanted to play a changling and when i told my DM this he sprung this little gem on me: If I take the Racial Emulation feat i can qualify for prestige classes of any humanoid race. Now thats all fine and good until he also told me that I wouldn't lose class features if I change race out of the prerequisite, somthing to do with once you snuck in and learned an ability you wouldnt forget it just because your race changed unless.  :lmao

Anyway what I wanted to know is are there any good racial classes, substitution levels or feats that i can take with this that will combine well. I tend to play Clerics or Druids if that helps and we are playing at level 14.

Thanks in advance  :lol

Not sure about the druids/clerics, but Shadowcraft Mage is ALWAYS badass.

DM wouldn't let me abuse the haversack, not powerful enough to change the outcome of an artifact :banghead

You could always argue that it's impossible to use it on the same basis as well.

I have been getting a lot of utility out of the changeling racial sub levels for wizard along with some of the gnome illusionist sub levels (Just don't trade off your familiar) - if you can stack on additional racial subs, that could get even more interesting.

Cleric sub levels and ACFs tend to all trade off the same thing, since the cleric only has one class feature, so you'll probably find a lot more of interest if you look through druid levels, as you're more likely to be able to stack them. Half Orc druid 1 (RoD) is free bonuses, and the later half orc levels are very strong as well. Halfling druid 1 (RotW) loses spontaneous nature's ally for the first few levels, but gives you basically free awesome bonuses. Even with just the half-orc levels and the halfling levels except 5, if you take able learner, you get climb, jump, hide, move silently, and intimidate as class skills, get 6 skills/level, and get assorted bonuses to summons and animal companion at basically no loss except for taking two good feats and being a changeling (never bad). Check the druid handbook for more levels to stack on as well. (Shifters also get racial subs for druid, not sure who else does among the humanoids, though.)

A half elf bard marshal diplomancer into Chameleon and snag some Arcane Archer while you're at it.

I would need flaws to take dragonwrought, fortunately i have 2 to play with so that could be fun...

other problem would be that changelings don't have age categories so no qualifying for epic feats off the bat...

Actually a changeling might not as changelings do not have age categories like kobolds do.

I'm not sure if you COULD take Dragonwrought.  Racial Emulation specifies you gain the subtypes of the mimicked race, so a Changeling mimicking a Kobold would gain the Reptilian and Dragonblood subtypes.  However, he isn't a kobold.  There is no Kobold subtype, so he wouldn't qualify for things as a Kobold.  He could qualify for Dragonbloood or Reptilian stuff, but not Kobold.

So much for that, I guess.

Kobolds do not actually have age categories until they take up dragonwrought.

Yes they do.  All Kobolds have the 12 age categories according to table 3-2 on page 39 of Races of the Dragon.  Still, the Changeling doesn't qualify for Dragonwrought  :sorry

Then how exactly do you explain that kobolds get the regular table for aging too?

Because the regular table for aging tells you the ages at which they get bonuses and penalties as well as maximum age.  Table 3-2  says what age category they are in.
