Deck of 52 cards instead of action points...
« on: January 29, 2010, 05:29:58 PM »
Dug this up recently while looking through my old houserule ideas. It is for my mystic western campaign (West Reach), but it's on hiatus right now so I might as well share.

Enjoy. :)

Can players trade cards?

How would abilities like a DM heir interact with this?

Also, numbered diamonds seem to be negative for players.

"Diamonds - A number card of diamonds can be used to increase the player's defense for a single enemy's turn by the number on the card."

I intended for it to mean that, when your enemy is trying to attack you, you play it to raise your defense (AC for D&D).

Also, I'd personally not allow my players to trade cards. Four players, four suits, five cards each, some scheming, and now everyone has a flush and some might have better. If I did allow trading, I'd put a limit, something like one trade per level, per player. So two players could only trade once with each other upon leveling up, and with no one else until the next level up.

And DM heir? I don't quite understand the question.

Dragonmark heir gets extra action points per level.  Does that just map to drawing extra cards and discarding down to five, or what?

Ah, this houserule was designed for the D20Modern system, so I didn't take that into account.

But yeah, that's the idea I had for Advanced Classes (which gain 7+1/2 level AP per level instead of 5+1/2 level AP). DM Heir would allow an additional draw at levelup, but then you'd have to discard down to five cards.

Love it. So much more interesting than action points. Me and my buddies are thinking about using it on a table top game soon.

Cool! If you could tell me how well (or poorly :( ) it works if you try it, that'd be great.

Have fun gaming!
