need help with a fucked computer
« on: January 19, 2010, 07:47:59 PM »
So... my computer got hit with trojans, adware, etc. and I've cleaned all that out, only to find that it keeps having some error that brings up a blue screen (yes, of death) that says there's a "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" error, between actually finally being able to read that, and reading up on it, I figured out it's some kind of problem with my drivers. Fixable, but difficult for a couple reasons:

1. My computer can't get online. The wi fi receiver gets a signal and connects, but the actual browsers (firefox or IE) can't bring anything up. Firefox also keeps crashing before anything even comes up, and if I exit the firefox process is still running, so I have to manually end it and try to open firefox again.

2.I apparently am having trouble finding the browsers I need to update, since a lot of them are system things, like PCI and Bus stuff. Anyone know a good place to get them that doesn't require me to pay the site or get redirected to, say, Texas Instrument's website which is loaded with techno-babble and nigh-unnavigatable to someone who doesn't know what individual pieces of their computer actually do (I'm getting this problem with any site that says it has a TI driver, the link gets redirected)?

I don't have a disk for my computer, it like, didn't come with one... I got it second hand when the store I was working at closed, and apparently when they bought it, they had geek squad, or whoever, set everything up so there was no disk...

you would have to google it for specific instructions, but you basically move / rename a couple select files and replace the existing ones.. mostly it means your drivers and any corruption in your registry go ways.. as well as any malware hooked into the registry, unless they also got the backup files..

otherwise your files are untouched.

and stop w/ the 4chan porn n gambling...  :)

well, it's factory preset default drivers that seem to be the problem. I've gotten the viruses and shit taken care of. And really... I don't go on 4chan much or do any gambling online...  0:)

have you tried doing a system restore without the disk?  such as through using a "previous restore point"?  my roommate was having a similar problem, and that fixed it right up.

just a thought.  past that, I can't really help you -- except that if you can get a corporate copy of windows (so that you don't have to worry about # of computers that it can be put on).  should be able to get someone to download it for you (just make sure that you get a key code).

Tried System restore, isn't working now. It helped before, but I can't access any points set prior to the first of the month.

I guess I'll have to see if anyone's got a corporate version of windows or something.

ok let me see if i understand the situation correctly. You had virus/trojan/adware problems and got that fixed. Now you are getting bluescreens and driver errors correct?

How did you fix the virus issue? How you fixed it could be the cause and help figure out what to do. Also keep in mind that many viruses use system restore to hide themselves from deletion and will reinstall after a few boots.

Quick recommendations:
1. Boot in safe mode, just spam f8 key while booting up and it will bring up the list of boot options. Use the one with networking so you can download drivers from the manufacturer's website.
2. download and install MalwareBytes the free version, this is an excellent tool for removing trojans and rogue anti-spyware, i personally use it all the time as an IT professional and on my personal machines.
3. Once you have used safe mode to update the drivers and install MB reboot into normal mode and see if it will boot and run MB doing a quick scan. If MB closes immediately you are still infected and will need to jump through some hoops.

Let me know how this goes. If you can access another machine and have a usb drive this would be easier. Especially if the virus is still there.

well, it appears that the virus damaged his drivers -- depending on what drivers got damaged, he may have problems doing much of anything.  I've had things so bad that not even safe mode will work for what I want to do.

before you go any further, I recommend saving all you're important data -- either on to an external harddrive, or take your harddrive out and slave it over to another computer (and then re-install back in to your computer, of course).  Don't just transfer it whole -- just the data that you need.  Of course, there's always a web-based option, like Carbonite or something.
I say to do this in the event that you end up having to re-format.

I used AVG and Adaware to get my computer disinfected, and it works fine in general, except for freezing up after too much activity, and not being able to load websites.

Would it be at all possible to copy drivers from an identical computer to a disk and use that to fix mine?

I've tried that before -- it didn't seem to work very well (as a matter of fact, it made the problem worse).  It was explained to me what that was, but I didn't really catch it -- sounded like it had something to do with the equivalent of crossing streams.
I even took the harddrive from the bad computer, slaved it to a good computer (same operating system), and just did a direct copy-paste of the drivers -- it didn't do any good (of course, I'm perfectly willing to admit that the possibility exists that there could have been some operator-error on my part).

Tried something similar once, to about the same kind of effect.
Theres something to the whole crossing the streams business. Either that, or something that referenced or was referenced by the driver got screwed up.

a funny thing happened with the computer in question (my roommate's, that is):
well, first, we saved the important files, etc., from it (by transferring it to an external harddrive);
we burnt a copy of Ubuntu and installed it on the computer, and just ran that for a while.  one day (after all the other shenanigans we tried -- short of reformatting) we just decided to try to do a disk-less restore, and it worked -- don't know why/how. and we're not gonna complain (my guess is that during the time that Ubuntu was running, the system somehow was able to download the necessary updates to be able to restore).  of course, he's missing a lot of stuff, but that is easy to fix since we saved everything on the external.

just a thought  :shrug

The crossing the streams is because you can't just copy the files for drivers you have to have them properly installed, windows uses a registry so many files have to register with it or they won't work properly.

If you used Adaware and AVG there is still a fair chance that they missed parts of it. If you can get your hands on a windows install disk but don't have the ability to put your drive in a second computer as a slave try UBCD4win. It is a boot disk that boots into a windows enviroment and has several tools to help work on a PC. This will prevent the virus from starting and hiding itself via a rootkit.

Ok, first, fuck UBCD4Win. I tried to run it like three times, and it didn't fucking work.

Uninstalled AVG, now using Malwarebytes, that worked a lot better. I tried bringing up Firefox in safemode, and it worked. I can run it normally too. Now I just have two more problems with it:
1- When I try to log into something, it stops being able to load pages.
2- It is now just closing after a few minutes.

IE doesn't work either, same problems.

I can get UBCD, but the question remains, what do I do with it? I'm computer savvy in a "if I play with it enough I'll figure it out eventually" way, but it looks like UBCD actually deals the basic running system, so I'm loathe to just going messing around with it... My computer works for the most part, I don't want to turn it into a scrap heap...
