Yes, another Alter Self question [3.5]
« on: January 17, 2010, 04:28:55 AM »
Ok, I'm being an utter noob about this I know but I need a little clarification. I've read through the various threads on the spell and other boards but unless I somehow skimmed right past it I can't find the answers in any of them.

1. Does a caster using alter self to assume human form gain the human's bonus feat? I seem to recall that the human bonus feat was ruled to be an extraordinary ability, not a racial bonus feat, and therefore is not gained through the spell, but I can't find the post that states this. If the caster is human, do they temporarily lose their human bonus feat while under the effect of the spell?

2. The standard elf gains the Martial Weapon Proficiency feats for the longsword, rapier, longbow and shortbow as bonus feats (it's stated in the PHB and the SRD under the "Races" section). Assuming a DM doesn't rule otherwise, a wizard using alter self

Yes, and yes. Though for sanity's sake, many people rule otherwise.

Yes, and yes.

Probably though I would rule not. The elven bonus feats with weapons revolve around cultural training and such. Not racial physiology. So it makes no sense for you to be able to gain it by temporarily altering your physical form. Not like you learn the elven language while doing it either.

This is how I would rule it as well.

You could say the same about almost every racial bonus feat, ever. And the rules disagree with you 100% and they are very clear.

I mean... this is obviously a question about "What do the rules actually say?" rather than "How would you houserule this if you were my DM?" If he wanted to know the answer to the second one, he'd ask his DM...

Well, unless he was the DM...

"Just what do you think the moon up in the sky is? Everyone sees that big, round shiny thing and thinks there must be something round up there, right? That's just silly. The truth is much more awesome than that. You can almost never see the real Moon, and its appearance is death to humans. You can only see the Moon when it's reflected in things. And the things it reflects in, like water or glass, can all be broken, right? Since the moon you see in the sky is just being reflected in the heavens, if you tear open the heavens it's easy to break it~"

RAW this all works.  What house rules you use to deal with it are your buisiness... lord knows the polymorph line of spells can use some fixing.
