Cade grins in his usual pleased manner.

<<So, what are we waiting for? Are we going to go smash some goblins or not?>>

You all set off to the East, trying to make your way to the forest. The moon is out and nearly full and the sky is clear, so even without relying on darkvision you can see for some distance when the terrain allows it. It is a cold night, and you can see your breath. The land is mostly quiet, but you hear the occasional howl in the distance.
So how are you guys doing this? How are you walking? Who is scouting? Any long duration buffs you're casting? Etc. Also, does anyone have ranks in Survival and want to make a check to see if you can head in the right direction?  :p

A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.
Once we reach the forest, Ris-Janna would use the abundant cover to sneak around and scout ahead, but she'd take care to stay close enough to allow the others to catch up in one turn in case there's trouble.
As for Survival, it's useable untrained, so Sejanus should be able to do it just fine. :D

...and IC gives me a 500 again. Hide and Move Silently mods are +26 and +20 respectively, before penalties/bonuses for undergrowth and whatever. She also gets Darkstalker from the cloak.

EDIT: It's back up. Hide, Move Silently, Spot, Listen (1d20+26=28, 1d20+20=25, 1d20+10=26, 1d20+10=16)
While traveling with the main portion of the group, Cade attempts to perceive his surroundings to detect danger. Not much of a scout to begin with, he decides against bothering to maintain his facade since it provides only minor benefits to the art of stealth, and reverts to his natural appearance. Part of him simply wants to be ready for the inevitable fight.
If I had extra skill points, maybe I would have dumped them into hide/move silently (though it still quickly becomes irrelevant the larger I get in normal form). So I'll stick to keeping my eyes and ears out.

Spot: 1d20(5)+8=13
Listen: 1d20(13)+8=21
Survival: 1d20(16)+6=22

Raoul seemed to be very much ready to burn anything that got in the way. To demonstrate the point, the occasional branch that obstructed their passage seemed to be swiftly dealt with in what could only be described as a beautiful display of swordsmanship.

Marlowe, as usual, seems a bit on edge while traveling through the forest. Anyone watching the clerk (assuming they managed to pick him out from his surroundings, a surprisingly difficult feat) would have seen him peering around worriedly, listening intently for worrisome noises.
IC is down again...Hide is +16, MS is +14, Spot and Listen are both at +12.

Sejanus is travelling under invisibility unless required to break it, behind and to the left of our gangsta choker.  The bird is flying out 50' in front of the lead member of the party.

IC is down:  Bird's Spot = 9, Bird's Listen = 12.

Using these rules for vision. I don't think they're all that different from the standard ones.

Marlowe's rolls (Hide, MS, Spot, Listen in that order):
Roll(1d20)+16:
13,+16
Total:29

Roll(1d20)+14:
17,+14
Total:31

Roll(1d20)+12:
4,+12
Total:16

Roll(1d20)+12:
1,+12
Total:13

Sejanus' rolls (Spot, Listen):
Roll(1d20)+9:
9,+9
Total:18

Roll(1d20)+12:
6,+12
Total:18

The bird can't really see very well, though, as it doesn't have darkvision or low light vision.
The land leading up to the forest is typical scrub, with small shrubs and bushes dotting it. It provides some cover for your approach. Sejanus' bird is the first to approach the forest, but it sees nothing as it passes into it.

However, as Ris-Janna approaches, she sees a dark colored canine creature crouching behind a tree, just after her darkvision penetrates the edge of the treeline. It does not appear to have spotted her or her companions yet. She is a short distance ahead, so it is about 60 feet from her, and twice that distance from the others.

Cade assumes the Lazy Turtle Stance and maintains it as they draw nearer to the forest. As the largest target, he must be ready for attack from any angle and at any time.

Stop. Some kind of big dog, with dark hair... some sixty feet ahead... right behind the treeline. Could have something to do with the gobbos... but I don't see anything else. Take it out just in case... or sneak around it?
Ris-Janna's eyes narrow, and she eyes the dog suspiciously as she relays her discovery to the others.
How big is the thing? I don't think that's a stinking normal worg, too low CR. :P[/shameless metagaming]
Cade approaches Ris-Janna slowly, and listens to the telepathic relay. He then responds in kind.

<<Hmm...? Could it be? A group of goblins.... Perhaps they are being aided by... what were they called again? I can't see it yet...>>

As Cade gets within about 20 feet of Ris-Janna, she sees the creature quickly turn its head toward his direction. Then it turns and begins to slink into the forest.
The creature bolted before Cade could get close enough to see it. Also, his check isn't high enough to know what a barghest is. :P He might have heard of them, but he knows basically nothing about them.

No one else has seen the creature so far. If anyone wants to try to do something before it escapes, I'll need initiative rolls. I don't think a surprise round is called for, as the creature was aware of Cade before any combat was initiated. Anyone disagree strongly?

I went ahead and rolled a few knowledge checks for each of you. However unless you actually see it yourself, you'll have to go on what Ris-Janna tells you, so I think a -5 circumstance penalty is called for.

Rauol knows that goblins often use creatures called worgs as mounts. They're basically wolves with rudimentary intelligence. They have their own language, and some can even speak common. He can't be sure that this is what was seen, but he knows they are often associated with goblins. If he could get a look at it himself, he could probably tell for sure if that's what it was.
<<After it, quickly! If it is a worg, it could be serving as a scout for the goblins.>> He urges his companions onward; the hilt of a sword leaping towards his hand with seemingly no blade to follow. He readies a fiery globe of crackling flame as he dashes after the creature.
AFB right now so I can't check the Warmage spell list, but I presume Scorching Ray's in it. Here's the Init roll. Initiative roll (1d20+2=6)
Gah... good job, gorilla! Ris-Janna, being closest to the wolf-thing, ducks deeper into the brush as she prepares to sprint after it.
This seems appropiate, if heavily hyperbolized in this case. :lol
The creature gets a 16 for Initiative, so Ris-Janna goes before it. Go ahead and post your actions, and other people can roll initiatives and post their actions as they pop in. You see it start to slink off, but you're quicker than it and it doesn't know you're there. So you can do something before it leaves your line of sight, if you want. Or you can try to follow it stealthily through the forest, etc.

I'm pretty sure Scorching Ray is on their list. I think the warmage class, including spell list, is on www.crystalkeep.com.

Changed my line in the last post a bit.

I rolled Init just in case. Not sure if it's worth trying to do anything since I'm too far away to really do anything right now. Guess I should have taken the fighting style ability that boosts my speed. :)
I guess I didn't make this clear. The "wolf" was/is hiding. No one else can see it except Ris-Janna, because she beat it's Hide check with her Spot, but no one else did (at least not at the current distances).

So while the rest of you could hit it with an area effect, you can't target it individually.
