D&D 5 Joke?
« on: November 26, 2009, 10:50:52 PM »
http://www.dnd5.com/

It could very well be a joke or a hoax. I checked the whois information and it's registered to a 'Sorcerer's of the Mountain'
Sorcerers of the Mountain
 1600 Lind Ave. SW
 Ste 410... Next to WoTC
 Renton, WA 98055
 US
 (206) 369-6753

By the way that's the same address as WotC, but I don't know how hard it is to fake your address in the the whois information.
Any guesses as to what it will be?

Edit:

I feel silly not checking the source code before posting the link.

Yeah, I saw the page too over at TGD.

Even without looking into it, it should be fairly obvious it's a joke.  WotC still has a lot of 4E material to produce.  They aren't going to kill this cash cow yet until it's already on its last legs.  I imagine they'll handle 5.0 similar to how they handled 4.0: they'll lie and say they aren't working on it while selling for the current edition, and about six months out, reveal the glorious new edition at Gen Con or something similar.

Then lie to the 4ed forum goers and try to get rid of them as best they can.

Then we will grudgingly have to accept the 4ed "holdouts", just like the older editions folk had to grudgingly accept us 3.x holdouts. Then the cycle begins anew.  :D

You forgot the part where they'll 'improve their boards functionality' with a week of down-time coupled with a dreadful layout upon restart that drives away all the 4e fanbois.   :eh

Hey all ;)

Followed the referrer link from my site (dnd5.com) and thought I would respond about this...

I am a graphic designer/web developer and an avid D&D fan - as such, I tend to make various and sites that are D&D related. I also do various 'fake' stuff regarding D&D for fun - not to anger anyone, but simply to have fun. For example, this was the last 'fake' project I did...

Azeroth the D&D setting for 2011?

So as for dnd5.com, the way this started was a thread I created at EN World called "5e sooner than we think?" where I posted this modified 'screenshot'...

...this lead people to dnd5.com of course.

I posted the thread before going to bed - next morning it was locked, despite the relatively positive feedback. I did not expect to fool anyone at all and as it is known there that i do graphic stuff (the logo for EN World, subscription banners, and other stuff like Azeroth CG above) that was another clue. And then of course was the source code (something I look at regularly).

Anyway - there is a little background behind this in case you were interested :p

Oh and to the question of how hard is it to fake your address for a who is. It isn't. Legally you are supposed to provide a valid accurate address and keep it up to date if something changes, but they don't really check it.

Weem i would be wary however of WotC suing you. You are using their game's title which i'm sure they have trademarked. Also baring that they could use internet squatter laws to forcefully shut down the site. Since some guy tried to extort millions for WWF.com from what was the WWF wrestling group at the time, they have cracked down on people buying domains that could be used by large organizations. Peta.com v Peta.org is another example. One was People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals while the other was a spoof People Eating Tasty Animals. Guess which one got shut down using squatter laws.
Clerics and Druids are like the 4 and 2 in 42. Together they are the answer to the ultimate question in D&D.

Not sure what you had in mind for "sillier" but I cropped your image better so that it took into account the forum re-sizing - so this one is not crunched. Just right-click and save it and use it instead. Then at least it won't be smashed down like it is now ;)

I'm not too concerned. There will be 5e content there in the future (that's the plan). There is also a non wotc owned dnd4.com that is operating fine (so far), but you are right, it is something to keep in mind. Worst case scenario, I get a C&D which is fine - easily resolved. I'm not looking for trouble, hehe.

Yea i figure if they had a problem a C&D would be the first step. Plus i think all the idiots who were coming up with ideas like copy writing the terms paladin and ranger are all gone now too.

Parody is covered by the constitution under free speech. So if they send you a cease and decease simply point them to that.  :D

Don't just back down like Hackmaster did to their threats.

ps. Don't let things get back to how TSR treated their costumers near it's end thanks to that woman!

Na, this was for the (still) un-announced 4th Edition setting for 2011 (2010 being Dark Sun of course).
