BTW, I take it the bug has a special ability that lets it whirlwind attack and move in a surprise round?
Yep. It's basically just the Tome version of Whirlwind attack, actually. I forget what the feat name is, but it lets you move and attack everyone within reach (once each) as a move action.

Oh, does mindsight need line of effect?
No, but it won't work in an AMF/DMZ.

A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.

OK, it just seemed like it was getting a whole lot done (popping up, whirlwind, grapple, pin, move).

Technically the only action it took was a single move. Everything else was just a "rider" on top of that, almost entirely due to its feats. ;) You can see later, when I post the stat block.

Okay, I presume the bug is grappling Marlowe. Is it fully grappling him (thus losing its Dex bonus to AC), or is it doing that single-limb grappling thing?
You don't know. :P It's not all that huge (about 10' long), so you guess it's probably "fully" grappling him.

Also, I assume whatever tunnel it's retreating to is still covered by the DMZ. I guess since it actually got the drop on us rather than vice versa, there's not much to do other than just going in and ganking its ass. Good thing any gaze attacks won't work in a DMZ either.

Burrow

A creature with a burrow speed can tunnel through dirt, but not through rock unless the descriptive text says otherwise. Creatures cannot charge or run while burrowing. Most burrowing creatures do not leave behind tunnels other creatures can use (either because the material they tunnel through fills in behind them or because they do not actually dislocate any material when burrowing); see the individual creature descriptions for details.
There is no tunnel. The ground is torn up where it retreated, but any tunnel collapsed behind it.

It's a dead magic zone, not an AMF. So it doesn't need LoE (my interpretation, anyway). Anyone with decent spellcraft and/or knowledge (arcane) would know this. So yes, you'd guess the creature is still within the DMZ, unless it has moved outside of it.

Well shit, there goes the stinky plan.

Have I stumped you guys? Are you going to just let poor Marlowe become bug chow?  :D :p

And I forgot my "do much of anything but punch things hard in the face" stance... Unless... Hold on a moment... Yes, this might do.

--edit--

Gotta thank Phaedrus for leaving a perfectly good "Forms for Alter Self" list laying around the internet. :)

Now, I'll just have to figure out which way to dig...

Would scent-based tracking work?

I'd think it could, since odors tend to be trackable on the ground (see: tracking by hound); However, I don't have scent, least of all (Ex) scent. Wildren do have both scent and a burrow speed, but their speed is only 10 ft. It'll be hard enough trying to follow at 20 ft.

Besides, I'm reasonably sure you can't get scent from Change Shape.

The Barghest has scent and a reasonable survival skill. If tracking works underground, it could give directions.

What kind of action is it for Cade to change shapes? Is it still his turn, or are we moving on?

Since it's not specified, it defaults to a standard. That plus a move means my round is up.

So since the beetle dragged me out, my FoM should reactivate, yes?

Yep. Scratch that. See the combat thread for an explanation. It didn't get to move.  :P

Well damn. You described it as fast, so I didn't think two hits would immobilize it. :P

Well... it has a burrow speed of 20, and can attack everyone in it's path during a single move. I thought that was pretty fast.  :lol

Well, that's a shame. Incidentally, can I breathe right now, being underground? :p

Hmm, would I have to try to grapple the bug in order to wrestle marlowe free? If I can grab marlowe, perhaps I can hold onto him with my legs as I use my arms to burrow out, leaving the bug stuck in the ground.

Yeah, I think trying to wrest Marlowe from the bug's grasp would be an opposed grapple check. Well... either that, or Disarm...  :lmao

And yeah, we'll say Marlowe can breathe for the moment. Between Cade's and the bug's burrowing, they've made air pockets around them (otherwise, how can any burrowing creature breathe? do they have to surface for air like a fish? Hmm... that's an interesting idea... Maybe we should go with that...)

Well, there would definitely be some air, but it would be very limited.
