Saw Avatar in 3D. It was quite good. My wife even liked it, and said she'd like to see it again, and she doesn't usually like Sci-Fi or Fantasy stuff.
[spoiler]
A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.
...thanks

 :o ... but PhaeXY, aren't you a little bit "fantasy" -ish ?!
D&D and all this ...  ;)

Where The Wild Thing Are - I understand now the "scariness" toward younger children. I was kinda scared too (man whimper).

I guess going to see something from your deep childhood, might automatically be a let-down.
Still liked it.

Finally saw The Hangover.  Freaking epic.  Very rarely do you see a movie live up to its hype, but Hangover manages it.  The outtakes of the little Asian guy, Kim Jeong, are hilarious.

The interesting part about Avatar in 3d was that the best 3d-effect where the photos Jake looked at rather quickly up in the hallelujah-mountains when he first got there. Aren't they supposed to be 2d?

Avatar in 3-D.
Ouch = headache.
I stayed for the whole movie, but I won't be seeing any 3-D movies for a while.
My criticism is very simple.
To make the 3-D work ~correctly, the Director and Camera Operators have to come up with a different process.
What I mean is 2-D camera work, doesn't work very well with 3-D.
They gotta come up with 3-D style camera techniques, something totally separate from historical movie camera uses.
(grumpy)
I'm'n'a go see it in 2-D.

The fundies that are protesting it are fools.
It's more likely that the Hero guy is a Saul / Paul figure,
than it is that the blue peoples' "religion" is pantheism.
It's not.
It's a group mind, like Ants or Bees or Termites.
Big diff.
Ants don't conceive of themselves as a Pantheism, no matter how large their group is.
10^4 info in the trees * 10^12 number of trees (via the Sigourney char) = about the same processing power and memory as 1 human.
Humans have Corporations that function as Humans for legal purposes.
That doesn't make the Humans that do this, into Nature Spirit worshippers or Heretics.
 :banghead ... sigh ... whatever.

Avatar in 2d.
Loved it.

Turns out, there is a processing "error" in some people's vision, that the NYTimes covered.
I guess I have it. Would have to get tested ... yawn.

Anyways, the Vatican weighed in against Avatar.
[spoiler]
They usually think about stuff more clearly than the Fundies.
Their main complaint was against the Nature Worship, with a hint of pantheism no no.
Ok bear with me.

There's a concept called "Anthropomorphic God",
where God takes on / is conceived of with human body form.
That's supposed to be a no no. God is Spirit, etc ...
Easy enough, even if one disagrees about capital G or whatever.

The Avatars are the Human + Nabi combos.
They are grown from Human + Nabi DNA ; so the movie says.
The Avatars are quite literally "Anthropomorphic Aliens".
More, the Nabi are portrayed in very simplified Human-o-centric ideas.
Some Sci-Fi makes it explicit, that Aliens are NOT humans.
Some Sci-Fi goes farther, and say that Aliens can not be understand in human terms, even though that's what human are stuck with.
I think the Vatican's main criticism of the movie
is a confusion of Anthropomorphisms.
I guess the aliens came too close to a theological biggie.

I could see a connection of their anti-cloning ideas and the Avatars.
I wonder why the Vatican missed that?

(and yes, I'm not trying to engage/argue with them)

Saw "Crank 2:  High Voltage" last night.  I enjoyed the first movie thoroughly.  This was also highly entertaining, though a bit more over-the-top than the first one (which is saying quite a lot).  I never thought I'd see anyone one-up the famous 'public sex' scene from Crank, but Crank 2 topped it.

Legendary Pictures (Clash of the Titans remake) wants to redo Godzilla.  Not a sequel to the crappy Roland/Emmerich film, but remakes of the Japanese movies.  This is either a very good or very bad thing im not yet sure which

Anyone have the opportunity to see the Solomon Kane film? It looks pretty decent. Looking forward to it becoming available in the States.

Anyone see Sherlock Holmes? A little too action-packed for the rabid Doyle fans, I'm sure, but I rather enjoyed it.

Speaking of remakes, apparently they're redoing Karate Kid and Red Dawn, as well as a reboot of the Predator franchise.

Red Sonja?  Holy shit, I watched that a few weeks ago, for the first time in over 10 years.  I was quickly reminded of why it was such a crappy movie.
