Johnboy reminded me of another for the list:  Excalibur should be considered a fantasy staple.

+1. That (Excalibur) is one of the first fantasy movies I ever saw, along with Willow and Red Sonja/Conan.

I didn't find Akira to be all that good a movie, it was just extremely significant.  I mean, it was a good and profound movie, and one of a kind (at the time), but not a great movie.

Did you see it subtitled with the original script or dubbed with the altered script?

It's been too long.  I think it was dubbed, but I can't say if it was original script (well, with minor variations that come with translations, of course) or not.  And I did watch at least part of it subbed.  I'll try it again sometime when I have time (subbed, make sure on the script, see if there's a difference in script between what I watched).  And I can't wait until DiCaprio comes out with his version.  I'm itching to see if it's any good/does justice.  Should be soon, at least.

An easy way to tell: If the military guy was the good guy, its the dubbed american script.

No, I don't think he was.  But like I said, it's been a really long time.  I think around 4 years?  I've gotta watch it again.

Nice list. I've seen like at least 98% of the movies listed in this whole thread. I think I watch too many movies. Or maybe I'm just old. :P
[spoiler]
A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.
...thanks

One I saw relatively recently: Rachel Getting Married.  A psychological film about a drug addict attending her sister's wedding.  And on par with Silence of the Lambs, his other major work.

Nah, I've seen only a few of those.

Once (awesome movie)
Blind Shaft (I can't remember if I watched this, but I know we have it, and my Chinese in-laws watched it once while I was around. I don't think I actually did, though...)
Lifeforce (this is an old movie, right? Sci-fi/horror?)
Persepolis (I remember it was French, right? But that's about it. :P )

Blind Shaft is one of my favorite movies, ever. It's terribly grim, of course, but I liked Germinal (the novel) for much the same reasons.
Lifeforce is indeed a sci-fi/horror movie. A rather crappy one at that. It's Patrick Stewart's one regret in all of film. Hence the recommendation.
Persepolis is some sort of French-Iranian mix, considering that Marjane Satrapi is from Iran but has lived in Strasbourg, France for years now. Oh, and Iggy Pop of all people apparently voice-acted Uncle Anoush in the English dub.

I've seen most of these through the University of Delaware's International Film Series - some interesting stuff there.

I didn't care for Silence of the Lambs.  I read the book before I saw the movie, and had constructed a very different Lecter in my mind.  I saw him as suave and urbane, always calm and collected, very old-world nobility.  Hopkins portrayed him as more nervous, jittery, and spoke far too quickly.

It's funny:

I haven't seen a single movie off of this list:
Once
A Film With Me In It (seriously, that's the name)
Paprika (Terribly mind-warping.)
Blind Shaft
Another State of Mind
I Served the King of England
Die Welle/The Wave
Lifeforce (This one's in the So Bad It's Good range. Unintentionally hilarious.)
Persepolis
Offside
Look Both Ways
The Proposition
The Bridesmaid (Primarily because you just can't stop watching for the impending train wreck.)
The Motorcycle Diaries
Black Book (Makes it much easier to spot dye jobs.)
Sin Nombre

But I've seen every one off of this list:

Army of Darkness.  Can't believe nobody's thrown that out yet.
Collateral
Heat
The Kingdom
There's Something About Mary
Knocked Up
The 40-Year Old Virgin
My balancing 3.5 compendium
Elemental mage test game
