Does anyone know of any sort of messenger service that would work well for online gaming?

IRC works pretty fine for my group, though we organise up on MSN, just find an appropriate room name and setup in it. Add a dice roller script or two for the DM.

"Just what do you think the moon up in the sky is? Everyone sees that big, round shiny thing and thinks there must be something round up there, right? That's just silly. The truth is much more awesome than that. You can almost never see the real Moon, and its appearance is death to humans. You can only see the Moon when it's reflected in things. And the things it reflects in, like water or glass, can all be broken, right? Since the moon you see in the sky is just being reflected in the heavens, if you tear open the heavens it's easy to break it~"

Skype works surprisingly well. AIM chat rooms used to have a die rolling function. Don't know if it still does, though.

Does the video messaging on skype work well enough that one might play with their group via the interwebs? Ive recently moved back to my hometown all of the people I game with are about 2 hours away. Trying to find a way to keep gaming.

I've never used the video feature, but the voice works wonderfully. I assume the video would work equally well. If you're worried about maps/grids/etc there are some GM tools that you can use out there which would help. :)

The group I'm in uses Skype. You can only voice chat, but it works surprisingly well. We use twiddla for maps and such.
