Death Dealer of Ardara
Death Dealers are the highest order of knights that Ardara has. They are her sword in the battle against undead. They constantly seek out the foul and profane creatures, those who animate them and those who allow them and destroy all of them without pause or mercy.
Requirements
  • BAB: +4
  • Spellcasting: 2nd level spells
  • Domains: Must have access to the War domain and either the Repose or Exorcism domains
  • Feats: Endurance, Extra Turning, Weapon Focus (War Pike), Exotic Weapon Proficiency (War Pike)*
  • Deity: Ardara
  • Skills: Knowledge (Religion) 7 ranks, SOMETHING ELSE?
  • Alignment: Any non-evil
  • Special: Must be invited to join the Death Dealers by an established member
*In the game, clerics are granted proficiency with their deity's/order's favored weapon.

Class Features
  • BAB: 1/1
  • Saves: Good Fort/Bad Reflex/Good Will
  • Spellcasting: Advances at all levels except 1st and 6th
  • HD: d8
  • Class Skills (2+INT): Concentration, Craft, Heal, Knowledge (Religion), Ride

01 Detect Undead, Short Haft, Smite Undead 1/enc., Turn Undead
02 Empower Turning, Necropotent
03 Grave Shatter
04 Smite Undead 2/enc., Quicken Turning
05 Enduring Life
06 Greater Turning
07 Smite Undead 3/enc.
08 Heighten Turning
09 Lasting Life
10 Overcome Resistance, Smite Undead 4/enc.

Detect Undead (Sp): Death Dealers are under a permanent Detect Undead effect. You may suppress or resume the ability as a free action.

Short Haft (Ex): When wielding a war pike, you gain the benefit of the short haft feat.

Smite Undead (Su): One of the first tactics a Death Dealer learns is how to better impact the undead with  attacks. You gain the Smite Undead ability. You add your charisma bonus (if any) to the attack roll and add your total effective turning level to the damage roll.

You must declare that you are using a smite undead before you roll the attack; if your attack misses or you attempt to smite a creature that isn't actually undead, the smite attempt is wasted. If you use this ability against an incorporeal undead and fails because of the creature's incorporeality, you may reroll miss chance once, taking the better result.

For every three levels you advance in death dealer, you gain one extra use of smite undead per encounter.

Turn Undead (Su): Death dealer levels stack with cleric levels for determining your turn undead level.

Empower Turning (Su): At 2nd level you gain the ability to empower your turning attempts. After you add your turning level and charisma modifier to your turning damage roll, multiple the result by 1.5.

Necropotent (Ex): While wielding your war pike, you gain the benefit of the Necropotent feat even if you don't meet the requirements for the feat.

Grave Shatter (Su): If you roll a critical threat and confirm it while facing an undead opponent, you may expend a turn undead attempt to deal the extra damage to the undead. This ability does not allow you deal sneak attack damage to undead though.

Greater Turning (Su): A death dealer of ardara is skilled in destroying undead. You may preform a greater turning in place of a normal turn undead a number of times per day equal to 3 + your charisma modifier.

Enduring Life: You gain Enduring Life as a bonus feat.

Quicken Turning (Su): You may preform a turn undead as a swift action.

Heighten Turning (Su): When you turn undead, choose a number equal to or less than your turning level. You may add this to your turning check while subtracting it from your turning damage roll.

Lasting Life: You gain Lasting Life as a bonus feat.

Overcome Resistance (Su): At 10th level, you may overcome Turn Resistance equal to your death dealer level plus your charisma modifier.

I've worked on this a bit but I'm not real happy about it. The class went from "SUPERCOOLIDEA" in my head to "Well, it just got a bunch of bonus feats...". So, could I get some help in designing this class to be an undead destroying machine. I'd like to focus on improving turn undead to be usable at higher levels (things like Greater Turning and Overcome Resistance), using the war pike in combat (it's the order's favored weapon) and utterly destroying undead (it's what their mission is; hence necropotent, grave shatter and smite undead). Bonuses against necromancy/undead are good -- probably expected since Death Dealers expect to be in the thick of undead.

I'm basing this class largely on Knight of the Raven which doesn't quite fit with the goddess Ardara who is more community related and focused on burial rites but loathes undead and has nothing to do with the Sun; being the major deity of Death in the campaign, it seems fitting she would have an order of undead hunters.

Would you find an ability similar to the Hunter of the Dead (CWar)'s fifth level ability appropriate? Basically, if you kill an undead, it's destroyed permanently and can't be raised again as an undead.

I didn't even think of raiding Complete Warrior for stuff. I was too caught up in Libris Mortis and Heroes of Horror. But yes, that would be a good ability -- thank you. In fact, I think I may raid that entire class.

  • Saves: Good Fort/Bad Reflex/Good Will
  • Spellcasting: Advances at all levels except 1st and 6th
  • HD: d8
  • Class Skills (2+INT): Concentration, Craft, Heal, Knowledge (Religion), Ride

01 Detect Undead, Short Haft, Smite Undead 1/encounter
02 Necropotent, Quicken Turning
03 Improved Turning (Wisdom to Damage)
04 Body of Life, Smite Undead 2/encounter
05 Empower Turning, True Death
06 Greater Turning, Sacred Strike
07 Smite Undead 3/encounter
08 Positive Energy Burst
09 Improved Turning (HD), Sealed Life
10 Overcome Turn Resistance, Smite Undead 4/encounter

Detect Undead (Sp): As a death dealer of ardara, you gain the power to quickly and easily distinguish undead. You may use Detect Undead as a spell-like ability at will as a caster of your turning level.

Short Haft (Ex): As an immediate or swift action, you may lose the reach benefits of your war pike and threaten enemies adjacent to you. You may regain the reach benefits with an immediate or swift action.

Smite Undead (Su): Per encounter. Dealer Turning level in damage. Add Charisma to Attack.

Necropotent: While wielding your war pike, you gain the benefits of the Necropotent feat (+4 damage against undead).

Quicken Turning (Su): You may preform a turning check as a swift action.

Improved Turning (Su): At 3rd level, you gain the ability to add your wisdom modifier to your damage roll for turning. At 9th level, you may add your wisdom modifier to the maximum HD of an undead you are allowed to affect.

Body of Life (Su): Beginning at 4th level, you may add your wisdom modifier (if positive) as an additional bonus to your saves against necromancy effects and all saves versus undead. This is in addition to your wisdom bonus to your will save.

Empower Turning (Su): At 5th level, you affect more undead with your turn undead attempts. After your add your turning level, charisma and wisdom modifiers to your turning damage checks, multiple the number by 1.5.

True Death (Ex): When a death dealer of ardara destroys an undead, it remains dead. Any time you deal the killing blow to an undead, it can never return as an undead and is forever destroyed. However, a true resurrection, wish or miracle spell can bring the being back to it's original living state.

Greater Turning (Su): A number of times per day equal to (3 + your charisma modifier), you may preform a greater turning in place of a regular turning check.

Sacred Strike (Su): When you strike an undead with a critical hit, you may expend a turn undead check to confirm it. In addition, you deal an extra 2d6 of holy energy even if you do not confirm the critical.

Positive Energy Burst (Su): As a standard action, you may expend two turn undead attempts for the day to deal 1d6 per turning level you have to every undead in a 30ft radius. In addition, all living creatures (ally and foe alike) heal 1 hit point per turning level.

Sealed Life (Su): A death dealer of ardara is armored against the negative energy effects that destroy the ebb and flow of life. You no longer lose levels from necromantic effects and special attacks from undead.

Overcome Turn Resistance (Su): You easily shrug off the protection against turning some undead have. You may choose to ignore a number of points of turn resistance equal to your charisma modifier.

Thought process was improve turning and being effective against undead (both offensively and defensively) while offering incentives for the war pike (short haft and necropotent for free). Enterance would most likely be cleric 6 or cleric 4/ordained 1 (or cloistered cleric 4/ordained 2 for the optimizer).

So, what is made of this build of it?
