Themes in Games
« on: January 24, 2008, 03:12:39 AM »
After looking at Cthulhu Tech I was thinking about themes across games

So for example the Cthulhu Mythos is found in Call of Cthulhu, Acts of Evil, Cthulhu Tech, Dnd(the Far Realm), Freeport, Cthlulhu 500(card game), Arkham Horror(board game) and so forth.

Some other examples of a broad theme are Cyberpunk, Steampunk or Superhero.

What broad themes do you like to play and why?

And what kind of themes might you like to play but no RPGs exist for it.  For example mysteries.

In general, fantasy is pretty cool. D&D isn't the only one. I really like Earthdawn. The main theme in that is exploration.

I also like cyberpunk. Some of my favorite movies involve Future Earth.

Earthdawn is impressive when you consider when it first was published.

It would work well with the savage worlds system nowadays.

I love gritty realism, noir themes, and the like. Anything where the world is completely brutal or vile is a fun game in my book. Of course, I think that's because I love to write noir and most of the games I play are play-by-post, so I get to write a lot.

Earthdawn is incredible. Great fluff, decent crunch, it never got the support it needed. If I had more time, and could convince my group to do it, I'd start a game even now.

The one thing I really liked about the game was that it took some D&D conventions, and gave in game reasons for their existence. The whole concept of the Scourge forcing metahumans to survive the Horrors by building Kaers gave an actual in character reason to have a bunch of dungeons to explore.

I also like the fact that the characters are more defined by their abilities than their magic items. My Nethermancer never had more than a few items, and they all grew along with him.

Gritty fantasy, horror and mystery is my meat and drink. Which would make Call of Chuthulu a natural one would think. But I've never played a single game  :'(

Anyone fancy a game of the return of the Old Ones in not so scenic Lethbridge?
"No, no, don't think, Maya." Ritsuko chided. "We will not gattai the Evas or their pilots.

Such thoughts lead inevitably to transformation sequences."
