Looking to try a shooter for the PC.
« on: October 29, 2009, 08:25:42 PM »
My usual fare for the PC consists of RPGs, mixed up with some RTS. Recently, however, I'm inclined to try some shooters. The ones I've played and liked are, more or less in order: Mass Effect (an action RPG, yes, but it plays mostly as a shooter.), Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Halo 1.
I'd like to try something Present-Day or Futuristic for a setting. I absolutely don't play multiplayer, ever. I don't mind games that aren't very recent. The ones I consider are CoD: Modern Warfare, Battlefield: 2142 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

What's your opinion on those? Any other FPSs to recommend? Thanks in advance!

Gears or War and Team Fortress 2 are good ones (at least, I believe TF2 is on the PC).

Isn't TF2 a multiplayer game?

Bioshock!  Seriously.  It's technically set in the past, but that is in no way something of an issue.  Amazing storyline, great FPS, no multiplayer mode whatsoever, and it costs $20.

If you're looking for top-notch single-player FPSs, the list starts with Half-Life.  I would also recommend System Shock 2 (blended RPG/FPS), Deus Ex (also a blended RPG/FPS), Far Cry, the entire CoD line, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Battlefield 1942, Alien Vs. Predator 2 and Left4Dead (though L4D is much better as a co-op game with friends).

Doom 2.  :D

Doom 2.  :D
Doom 2 using the GZDoom engine!  I've lost so much time on that!  I get to go back to playing a game I loved 15 years ago with full 3D support!  Those insurmountable waist height fences* aren't so bad when you can jump.

I played Doom 2. It was fun, but not particularly so.
I was bored out of this world with Half-Life, so I can't really say that I enjoyed it.
I forgot to mention Deus Ex, which I enjoyed tremendously, and I also played Hellgate London as a Marksman, so that amounts more or less to a shooter.
CoD: Modern Warfare is currently top candidate.

CoD: MW is a great game but kinda short. I borrowed it from a friend and beat it in a few sittings on PS3 (granted those sittings were 5-20 hrs)

Also while it is an RPG Fallout 3 plays a lot like a FPS and is the greatest game ever made (only a slight exaggeration)

Traditional FPS that i liked was Unreal Tournament 2004 and to a lesser extend UT3. I would avoid BF2142 unless you are really in to multiplayer, there are way to many greifers and guys who claim to be 1337 on there that it made me quit playing it.

To each his own. Your entitled to your opinion, even if it is wrong  ;)

Hope Stalker does it for you.

That earlier mentioned game is beyond wrong. I'll stick to real Fallout that wasn't meant for console kiddies. :p Do I sound like Steadler and Waltdorf now? :D

VATS wasn't made for the consoles, it was made so the old people can get headshots too.  :lmao

Here is to hoping Stalker isn't a training simulator  :D

If you loved Deus Ex, you'll love System Shock.  Same basic gameplay (FPS with inventory management and RPG-style skill progressions), just a horror/survival/sci-fi theme instead of a conspiracy/UN/sci-fi theme.

Believe, I'm searching for SS2, but it's hard to find. I'm leery of secondhand versions on Amazon, since you can get crap with those.

I have a copy (no, I'm not willing to sell it :) ), but it's such a pain to get it to run on XP.

My hopes are mainly with Good Old Games to get System Shock one day.

STALKER is pretty entertaining. It has great atmosphere and nice gameplay.

I'd suggest Postal 2, only $10 on GOG. It is hilarious and ultraviolent
